Honestly I don’t think it’s a placebo, there is definitely some type of ancient primordial evil in the section of land (Wolf Creek) that Mick hunts and kills people in, it’s strongly hinted in the first movie especially the part where one of the girls says “why out of everywhere on Earth did the meteorite hit right here ?” My personal theory is that the land itself is either cursed or there is some ancient demonic entity in it that thrives off chaos and death. Mick was most likely already going to be a fucked up serial killer but he found himself drawn to Wolf Creek and the evil of the land somewhat “helps” him by making his victims easy prey like when their car and watches all stop at the same time. The Aboriginals here are doing their ritual and attacking the evil that channels itself through Mick it’s kinda like a symbiotic relationship Mick does the killing and the evil of the land fuels him.

Mick made a deal with Satan: selling his soul in exchange for 100 years of immortality. Mick is now basically a demon roaming the Australian outback. A lot of inspiration for Wolf Creek was taken from the movies Dust Devil and The Hitcher. Both movies are about demonic beings roaming the desert.

I think in his own twisted way, he said "Fucking tourists" as a way of blaming the tourist group for him having to kill the Aboriginal people in the first place. His psyche would be like "I wouldn't have had to kill these people if the tourists didn't drag them into it, but ah well".
