Join us, on the 30th anniversary of the enactment of Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988 (in England, Wales and Scotland), when Peter Tatchell, internationally renowned LGBT+ and human rights activist, will be speaking about, “Section 28: A Poisonous Law and Legacy”.
The amendment of the Act stated that a local authority “shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality” or “promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship.”
This special event is named in memory of Lord Wolfenden, who was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Reading from 1950-64. Lord Wolfenden chaired a committee that wrote the 1957 ‘Wolfenden Report’, a key milestone in LGBT+ history in the UK.
