First of all, Hamas has accepted cease-fire deals, but the US comes out and always claims they have not while “Israel” has then “Israel” turned around and says no we don’t accept the deal. Second of all what about settler colonialism happening in the West Bank right now that needs to be addressed and solved for this to come to an end. Third of all on your point of war crimes, the US is just as complicit and culpable of committing war crimes as “Israel” is.
@timc1604
@timc1604 День назад
Why do you put Israel in quotes? I find that funny some people do that or how others say “Palestinians” or “Palestine”, as if putting the side you don’t like in quotes makes them illegitimate or their claims to the land illegitimate 😂. The truth is both sides have legitimate claims. And don’t tell me the Jews are just Europeans. They have ancestry to the land and the mizrahi Jews (Arab Jews who were expelled from their countries) make up a large part of the Jewish population in Israel. This isn’t to excuse Israel’s behavior (war, occupation, discrimination, among other revolting actions), but getting rid of Israel or so-called decolonization aren’t ethical solutions given that the vast majority of Jews were born there.

The United States had its glory days after the second war, and it is now in a decline, this is a natural law that dictates how long an Empire can sustain itself. An Empire can prolong its life if it makes good decisions but it can also accelerate its demise by making the wrong decisions - the latter can be seen with the useless wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the continuous expenditures of billions of US dollars in support of the Ukraine war and the Gaza conflict. On the other side of this coin, we have China …….…. China does not waste its resources in useless wars or conflicts, instead, it is investing in its military, technology, and infrastructure, the day will come in which China will be the number one economy and military power, and the United States will become less relevant.

He didn’t do any “both-siding.” He didn’t say they have equal responsibility/power to making peace. He just suggested Hamas plays a role to their bringing peace. @@dipropraubha9434 possibly. You would have to give me specific instances you want to discuss. But I’m not sure why you object to calling Hamas’ war crimes as war crimes. @@timc1604 because it's both-siding the issue. Even international law recognizes and somewhat "defends" or "justifies" the kinds of "war crimes" committed by the oppressed group, depending on the level of severity of the situation and particular context. I seriously encourage you to look into the form and severity of the examples I gave. If you think the 7th was bad...lol. You might want to prepare your heart and brain for what indigenous, Black, and Jewish peoples did to their oppressors as forms of resistance. You have no clue. Study the Haitian revolution and the conditions that came before, Turner's rebellion and the many many revolts in the US and especially Caribbean. What indigenous peoples did to settlers in the States because it's hilariously no different than Oc7 if not way WORSE. Jews in Warsaw is another good example. I can't say any details here unfortunately because my comment will get deleted. Also, you're citing ACADEMICS (on a planet dominated by imp. -i$m). I have all the respect in the world for all these left academics but you need to understand that literally any one of these people can and WILL say certain things in a certain way if there's certain forces at play, whether direct($) or indirect(environment, pressure). The only way an INTELLECTUAL will be 100% honest is if they're an active activist. Even one of my favs, one of the goats Tariq Ali came on democracy now and lied about my country, but I understand why he did it. They naturally don't have spines and can't blame them. It's their career and that's how the world works. We must learn how to use our own brains and think for ourselves

There so many issues and aspects to the current events in the Middle East. I’m looking at the individual Israeli soldiers… at what they are being commanded by their superiors to do . What are they feeling? Either they have been convinced or brainwashed into believing that their barbaric actions are justifiable and right,or they have turned off their sense of human decency just so they can function. Beware. When you join the military, you stop being an individual and you become a tool without the right to act according to your conscience. And the emotional damage you experience as a result,is often not because of what has been done to you but by what you have done to others!

I think Professor you should research a bit more about New Zealand, we have a multi-cultural society and have integrated the Maori population into many parts of this society. We don't have reservations like the United States and Australia. However, we do have a lower class(Poor) and a high prison population that is significantly filled by the Polynesian/Maori population. Also, Oct 7 may have been a war crime by Hamas taking hostages and having a firefight within a civilian event(Should never have been there in the first place) However, Hamas primarily destroyed a military target that housed two units of Special Forces, which is not a war crime. I understand what is being said here but the truth is a significant number of civilians were killed by the IDF enforcing a Mass Hannibal Directive using helicopter gunships and many other devices to kill what they believed to be Hamas fighters in the black of night.

When it comes to NZ Maori, I do think your genocidal narrative is a little exagerated RW (I do enjoy your delivery on many topics overall, esp your recent debate with Gene Epstein). I concur there were genocidal behaviours (Both by UK colonial aggressors upon Maori & by Maori upon Moriori). When it comes to modern treatment of historical tribal aggression, I offer the following response to Bill O'Reillys reaction at KH's recent politicisation of Columbus' "virtues" - Down in the Colonies we've seen similar politics confronting misdeeds of James Cook (the British Explorer of the late 18th century, not the Buffalo Bills Running Back). I recognise the values carried by our immigrating forefathers in a typical Monty Python "What did the Romans ever do for us?" fashion, but I also believe that we should connect with our longer standing cultures in our modern societies to help them uplift their lost (& damaged?) cultures for our collective benefit. If public monies can play a role in this uplifting without wasting our collective funds on disposable handouts, then I would suggest this is better social investment than warfare & bloated election budgets; Alternatively we might conclude that money just turns so many things to sh*t & we're simply better off investing our time instead. To see genocidal acts unfold today in Gaza, is obviously more confronting. There is a difference between [1] Secure Occupation to promote peaceful Freedom for the occupied; [2] Settler Colonialism; [3] A prolonged Apartheid State; [4] Untethered acts of extermination. Interestingly, the Jewish People are in a unique position having been occupied by states both new & old; I do gauge their current misdeeds are fuelled by this historical experience & the raw fear of incurring yet another existential threat. I also believe some Jews have more perspective (leaning on orthodox beliefs of exile), but the modern israeli it seems has succumbed to a darker force. Your argument is totally fallacious. Here is why: Israel and its Jews were never nor aspired to be an "empire" as were the Romans, the British, the Spanish, the Arabs or the Ottomans. Jews were persecuted in Europe (Spain, Portugal, Germany, Poland, England, Russia etc) as citizens therefore do not qualify as Europeans. They were a persecuted religious minority, an despised exiled people. Half of the population of Israel is coming from Arab countries because of being kicked out of these countries. Their origin was not European. Israelis are therefore not settlers but refugees coming back to their ancestral refuge. The only people that got pushed in Israel were Arabs who had been on a religious war and colonization since the 7th century. Christians or Druzes were not pushed. Pushing back on real colonizers is exactly what the Arabs did to the French empire in 1962. What Israelis are doing is pushing back on Arab violent colonizers not out of a desire for land resources, but to regain a defensible refuge after many pogroms and a holocaust. As a professor of Jewish origin you should know this better than anyone else. Jewish people have every right to their only country, including the right to aggressively defend it, in spite of what the world may think. Arabs have 22 States acquired through violent colonization. Israel is the sole tiny Jewish State.
@timc1604
@timc1604 День назад
I agree. The settler colonial argument to explain the creation of Israel is historically incorrect. Re-colonization of Jews (from both Europe AND the Arab world [lots non-whites in Israel too]) in the region of Palestine/Israel, where Jews originated, would be more accurate. However, colonialism did play some role in the creation of the new Jewish state in that colonial powers helped the Jews create Israel. Moreover, Israel deserves criticism for expelling hundreds of thousands of Palestinians (who were born there; Arab conquests centuries earlier wasn’t their fault) in 1948, their ongoing (illegal, according to international law)) occupation of Palestinian Territories, and misbegotten war in response to Hamas’ attack last October. The war was supposed to bring back the hostages and destroy Hamas. The war has brought back few hostages. Prisoner exchanges did. And Hamas is apparently not close to be destroyed. Worse, many tens of thousands of Palestinians have died.
@politicallil7060
@politicallil7060 День назад
So are you saying colonizing was not about taking land but about returning the various groups to the land they were originally located on? I'm confused 🤔
@timc1604
@timc1604 День назад
@@politicallil7060 read more about the conflict. I recommend “The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: What Everyone Needs to Know” for a very even-handed explanation. Jews the in 19th Century suffered through anti-semitism and some decided they should return to where Jews originated: the land of Israel (known by the 19th century as the region of Palestine). Only a minority of Jews at the time supported the idea. Some saw this movement, known as Zionism, as antisemitic as it could be seen as similar to telling an African-American to “go back to Africa.” Nevertheless, long story short: the movement gained steamed after the Holocaust in the 1940s, which convinced most Jews they needed a safe refuge. After the Zionists claimed independence in 1948 and created Israel, many Mizrahi Jews (Arab Jews) fled to Israel after they were expelled by Arab countries who objected to Israel’s creation. They objected for obvious reasons: there were many people, known by this time as Palestinians, already living there. The Israelis, wanting their state to be majority Jewish to ensure they could make the state a refuge for Jews around the world, expelled about 750,000 Palestinians, who fled, mostly to surrounding countries, creating now millions of refugees, a huge injustice. The Israelis see themselves as the true native population because Jews were in that region long before the Arabs living there (known as the Palestinians), who had conquered the land many centuries earlier. Of course, that is not the fault of present day Palestinians (or 20th century Palestinians) but this narrative is what Israelis tell themselves to justify their continued mistreatment of Palestinians. There’s much more to the story of course, but that’s the cliff notes version.

@@politicallil7060 To make it clearer: Were Algerians colonizing or occupying when they kicked out the French in a war, in the 1960s? No, because they were reclaiming their land that had been colonized by the French empire under Napoleon. Jews have always remained separate with a unique indigenous culture, religion and language anchored in Israel. They cannot be considered occupiers or colonizers since that land was historically theirs to begin with and was invaded and colonized by multiple empires: Mesopotamia, Persia, Rome, Arabs, French crusaders, Ottomans, British. The Jews were never an empire and were simply indigenous to this land. It is OK to want back what belongs to you but Israelis were accommodating and proposed many peace deals, to no avail. What Arabs consider theirs is what they colonized in the middle ages, "from the River to the Sea". Until they acknowledge the valid indigenous claim of the Jews, the conflict will perdure. Considering how tiny Israel is and how vast the lands of 22 Arab states are, this land conflict should have never festered, unless it is fundamentally a war of religion, therefore unsolvable.

Your view is distorted in many ways. Pleas read professor Avi Shlaim, why and how he and his arab family, came to Israël to be threated as second class citisens by the ruling Ashkenazi settlers from Europe. Further more, almost all of the israëlis have double passports and are not from there.
