WOLFGANG & THE BRATTY WAGON 

Lived on a farm next to Gutersloh when dad was on 92 SQN 69-71. Learned to speak German and dad/mum were great friends with Franz, who had the bratty van outside the main gate. Later in life, I returned to Germany on attachment to 1 QOHldrs in Munster, prior to heading out to BATUS. Loved my pommes fties mit Mayo, Bratties, Frikadellen or Currywurst!

I was partial to a snitzel or matbe a frikadillen. Good grub !

I served during the 80’s few years in Germany QOH , great memories you bring back . If you needed some info while on exercise on Saltau , good chance Wolfgang would be along and could help you out . Keep up the Great memories .

If you've never met Wolfgang you wasn't BAOR , loved snelly food in fact I get it all from Lidl 😜 but good old Wolfgang 👍

When wolfgangs bratty wagon appeared, everything would seem to stop. A great queue would form . What a treat and change from compo. The bosses never seemed to mind or step in, they knew it was great for morale . Great reminder Keith. P. S Aldi do a bratwurst that's pretty authentic , I must dig a trench in the garden, cook a bratty /frittes and drop in and eat it like the old days !!

Loved Wolfgang. Always remember he used pink paper to wrap the chips in. I was only ever used to white in the uk. Remember him following an armoured Sqn across Soltau. How that van made it I’ll never know as we struggled in tanks. He then always turned up at the flats as we loaded the train as he knew he’d get good business. Top bloke!

Happy Days. Was in Celle with 3 RGJ at the same time as 94 locating. Still getting brattys and bockys from the Schnelly and have even got a big bottle of the Gewürz ketchup! Bit of Paprika and a pilsener - oh how the memories come flooding back. I sometimes even feel young again 😂 Keep up the videos and the good charity work.

One lived in a house on the crossroad outside Tongeron in Belgium. We open for business she'd sit on her chaise lounge in the window, 86-88.

The main reason we kept fit in my old unit was so we could run fast when the van came. I was also converted from ketchup to mayo.

No one can forget wolfgang you could even trade diesel with him in exchange for a bratty I served in the 80's and 90's and my Dad served in the 60's and 70's he was the one who told me about him before I even got to Germany. What a bloke.

I remember when we were in West Germany on exercise in 1989, one of our young chefs decided to go to the red light district the same day that he'd got paid. When he came back later on that night he'd no money left but he'd a smile on his face like a cheshire cat. LOL.

Hola Keith...Early 80s, Mansergh barracks Gutersloh. We shared the barracks with Bundeswehr signals unit...thing is, the young German conscripts weren't very good at queueing up at the braty wagon...they soon learnt though...after a couple of Friday and Saturday night lessons, they queued as if they were at an English bus stop...

When serving in Malaysia and on Ex out in the J, a Chai Waller would always find us to sell a brew and egg & bacon roll.

At St Barbara bks Fally, we had a NATO bar opposite for visiting forces using Bergen Hohne ranges. They did a nice Frikkadele mit pommes. Introduced to Ritter sport rum chocolate in there as well

My first visit by Wolfgang was in 1989..😅 what a legend

"Wolfgang seemed to know where our units were" Story told me by someone who did his stint in the NVA. Since he had always dabbled in electronics, he was in "Funkaufklärung", or SIGINT in modern parlance. One day they went out for an excercise. Driving to the "innerdeutsche Grenze" trying to drop in on NATO comms. All very hush hush, mum's the word stuff. While their convoy was en route, they, erm, monitored Western radio stations and found that "Bayrischer Rundfunk" did the traffic news and at the end added a shout out to their unit, giving a damn good estimate of their location. The officers faces fell faster than Enron stock.

I only lived in BAOR when my Dad was in the army. There used to be a schnell imbiss on the edge of the estate. I remember the lady saying after me "Bat-vorst mit fritten". We used to get taken there for a treat and get a choice of tomato sauce or mayonnaise on our chips.

French gardens were beautiful and the lake was lovely

We used to be convinced that Wolfgang was issued with a VHF 353, and the daily Batco sheet, so knew our locations. Obviously he didn't need to, because i went on different exercises in Soltau with different units, and every unit used the same basic areas and skills and drills. So he knew where the troops would be. Personally, he should have been rewarded with something, as technically he served the armed forces, mainly Army over the years. After a few days or weeks on compo, anything different to eat was a bonus, and he supplied it. The handbags were brilliant, iirc he served crinkly chips? Anyway what a guy, hope he became a millionaire, he deserved it for his service to us troops. A real legend, rocking up day and night, we were dug in or whatever, everything stopped as we trooped over to get our scran and a ten pack, and another thing i recall was the bosses didn't seem to mind, well ours certainly didn't. Great trip down memory lane.

Never met Wolfgang, sadly, but scoffed many a Brattie!!😋

I've noticed how when you're reading out old regimental names that have either been disbanded or amalgamated or just renamed and wondered if you might do a vlog on the history of the army and how its grown and shrunk over time...? I appreciate it would be a lot of research but you've certainly got a good knowledge of them to start with...

I expect when camps closed economy in these areas went down rapidly. Every local hates the camps until they are gone.

I had the dubious pleasure of spending about 20 days at the Trauen Camp in 1972. Being with a TA regiment I went with the advance party to take over the camp prior to the Reg (101 Med Reg RA ) arriving. My wife had our second baby girl whilst I was out there, and I reckon half the camp knew of the birth before I did. Happy days which ended 2 years later due to weekend working needs.

Excellent memories and funnies. Our Katarin served in the Lithuanian Mil and remembers times in then unified Germany, before she transferred to UK she says 'Layby Lillies' originated the, apparently' - wouldn't know - popular UK diversion of Dogging. On a much lighter note...'Deadman's Handle' after a street patrol in Belfast or similar. - Half of Guinness in a pint glass, triple Vodka on top and then topped up with Stones Ginger Wine. Thanks for the mention Keith the LSRA is still going strong and meets up once a month and has a trip planned to Ypres next year but alas sadly the reserve unit is now fully disbanded after 114 years service.
