By 1950's the Railways of Britain were very special, a lot more than many imagine. They were our very link with the past generations, symbols of work, inventiveness and ease of mass transportation. Many didn't value them that much when they had them but they sure miss them now.

The two Wolverhampton stations were built by rival railway companies and by the time network had been nationalised and traffic levels had fallen - there was little business case in keeping both open. Being nostalgic and not being able to accept change is not a reason to to keep the 2 lines open. At Wolverhampton low level has been preserved and the route is a tramway.

Truly fascinating historical document of urban decay and rebirth, Policy makers sadly never look far enough ahead and the rebuilding is immensely costly. And the trams today are a miserable substitute for the locos of the old GWR line.

I suppose we should be grateful that none of the line formation was built upon in the intervening years. I remember photographing Bilston Central station about the same time as in this video trying to imagine Kings and Castles thundering through. At least we have a tramway in its place now but I know what I'd much prefer.......

I believe the lock at 8.56 is the last lock on the bradley flight of locks.

It's brilliant that it's been rebuilt since, but incredibly wasteful in comparison to leaving it open in the first place. A larger snow hill station is needed but can't happen now, hence the expansion of Moor st.
