Back in the 1980's and at about the same time there two biographies of Barbara Hutton published. I don't recall the name of the author but one of the biographies had so much inaccuracy and falsehood that it was removed from the shelves of bookstores. I recall that that biography made a reference to Barbara Hutton's diary. Cary Grant was alive at that time and said that he had no knowledge of his former wife keeping a diary during the time of their marriage. If Barbara Hutton had kept a diary or if any diary had survived it might have made for fascinating reading.

In nearly all the photos you can see the sadness in her eyes
@edwardoneil3962

It was the seriousness on her face that got me a sadness. But according to what I see in the photos and compared to the Autobiography film with Farrah I don't think that she was as wreckless and gullible vulnerable callous as she has been portrayed. I would say anything but. I get the impression that she knew what she was doing. She may have passed away with very little but then she had no one really to leave her wealth to.

Barbara Hutton did not live a miserable life it was a very privileged one. The misery and sadness is hyped up to make money for the film industry. She crammed into her life what would take the average person several life times to achieve. People who lived through the 2nd world war had sad and miserable lives. She lived as well as anyone could ever even dream of.

Asking for alimony would have damaged his movie star reputation... he already had an embarrassing nickname 'Cash n' Cary'.... everyone knew at the time that love was not the first reason Archie Leach, aka Cary Grant, married the billionairess... He was simply a bit more decent than the other jigolos...

@Tiney coner Williams: So true, so true. She also needed a mother's love. Every child needs their mother's love and she didn't have that and it seriously affected her all her life. The lack of love was evident in practically all of Barbara's behaviours. Barbara couldn't even love HERSELF because no one had loved her at a crucial time in her childhood development. All her life, she was like a little girl lost.

What a tragic story. And what a contrast to someone such as Margaret Merriweather Post who was also enormously rich but an active businesswoman.---I remember that in the 1980's two biographies of Barbara Hutton were published very close together. One was so full of lies that it had to be removed from bookstore shelves. The biography that was removed had something about Barbara's diary and Cary Grant her former husband was asked about it and said he never knew Barbara to keep a diary at all.---I also recall reading a Vanity Fair article about Farrah Fawcett who portrayed Barbara Hutton in the television production mentioned in the description. Ms. Fawcett said she hadn't been too concerned about dressing up but after portraying the Woolworth heiress and having to be dressed and groomed to match her, Farrah Fawcett said she became more interested in how she looked and dressed. Ms. Fawcett, also as a result of portraying Barbara Hutton, became interested in jewelry and for each acting project she was in would buy one piece of jewelry to add to her personal collection.

Andrew Brendan Marjorie was Barbara’s aunt. Unlike Barbara young Marjorie had a very close relationship with her father which gave her a grounded arrival into adult hood. Edward Hutton helped Marjorie grow her fortune and in a stroke of genius bought the rights on the new way to freeze food. This became Birds Eye and then General Foods. I hope I’ve got it right.

Wow.. this absolutely made my morning and even brought a tear to my eye. You did such a beautiful job with this. I'm sending the link to my mother in Paris so she can see it. Many blessings to you. You are incredible. Thank you so very much. The photos of her wearing the emerald and diamond tiara are two of my particular favorites. They were taken at her home in Tangier called Sidi Hosni Palace. She also had the most amazing diamond ring, one of the biggest I've ever seen. Albeit very distantly and only briefly through her marriages my relation to her had a profound impact on my childhood and growing up. I own a few pieces that belonged to her. Two hand carved ivory cigarette holders and a silver tea/coffee service set and a couple of gold chairs and a set of carved wood pedestal columns, I cherish those pieces. She had a sad life for the most part but it's often nice to look back at all this and hope that her energy has found some peace with it all. You made a beautiful tribute with this. My dad would have loved it had he still been here. Thank you again so very much x

In my opinion, I think that Igor Troubetzkoy loved her, too. Cary and Igor were both good for her compared to the leeches that said they loved her before and after the marriages of Barbara and Cary and of Barbara and Igor. No marriage would have made Barbara happy. She was a bottomless pit of NEED. The abandonment by her parents, her mother through suicide and her father through business deals, drinking and money, left a bereft young girl who would never be anything else. She was sensitive and had the most profound injuries to her psyche at age 3 onward. She deserved a better life. She was a good soul. She had a ton of money, but she wasn't shy about giving it away to charities, staff, friends and strangers. She was broke when she died in 1979. (Her lavish spending had a lot to do with it, but so did the graft of her main lawyer, Graham Mattison. He took millions from her; several millions!) Poor, darling Barbara. At least she is now at peace with Lance and her mother.

@@lisaellis2593 She was broke. She could not pay for her nurses, have flowers sent to her suite, have her hair done, etc.... For Barbara, that was BROKE. Most of the bequeathments in her will did not happen. She DID have millions in possessions when she died, but she, and those in her will, did not benefit from the wealth the sale of those possessions might have brought. Graham Mattison, her lawyer, sold most of her things before and after her death, and stole millions from those sales. I am always angry that he was allowed to get away with that and was never investigated. He had at least four homes, stateside and abroad, worth a whole lot of Barbara's money and no one looked into how he was able to amass such a ridiculous fortune. Barbara's main source of stocks was with the Woolworth company, but those were sold decades before her death.

@S.E. LANDEROS: Barbara did over-spend, but she was robbed blind by her lawyer, Graham Mattison. He was a greedy and disgusting person, (like most of the people around Barbara), and when he died, his estate was HUGE. Most of that was because of Barbara. She kept him on because he knew all of her secrets~~~she also knew he was robbing her. After her death, the things he did were absolutely unspeakable. Most of the people in Barbara's will never received what she had bequeathed. That was Graham Mattison. SAD. Also, while Barbara was living and in a diminished capacity, he told her she was BROKE and cut off many of her luxuries. He simply was stealing from her. Barbara had a shit end and Graham Mattison was behind most of that. I think he died in 1987 (???), but somewhat recently, and check out what he left behind. That was ALL Barbara's money. ALL. He was a scumbag and Barbara knew it, but she was afraid of him; especially in her senior years. Poor Barbara. She never had a chance. Rest in Peace and Love, Barbara.

One of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. Her life was like most people's, with ups and downs; the only deeply sad thing is the satisfaction people get to portray her as miserable. She fought a lot of envy, she learned the lessons afforded to her by her privileged life and busy parents, and she attracted the type of persuasive suitors wealth usually attracts -- sometimes she managed well, sometimes she made mistakes. She was known as a very generous soul. I hope she rests in peace. Thanks for sharing this material; beautifully done!

Barbara was quite lovely and beautiful before her anorexia and alcoholism and pill addiction took hold. Her anorexia started with her first marraige to "Prince" Mdivani. He told her, roughly a month before their marriage, that she looked FAT, and it was then that her anorexia began. She ate nothing, (really, not anything of substance), for the next 45 years and that contributed GREATLY to her poor health and death. All Barbara did was drink Coca-Cola by the case, EVERY DAY, and ingest alcohol and pills. She loved Mdivani, but he never loved her. It was all about her money. She deserved a better life than the one she lived. But it could never be~~~she did not know love; with her father not loving her and her mother having committed suicide when she was five. ALL of her troubles came from her loveless childhood and lack of a mother or nurturing. Rest in Love now, Dear Barbara. Rest in Love.

A man in her position would have received a very through education and at least a university degree. Her entire education was was was provided at upper class girl's finishing schools which didn't go into detail about the ins and outs of proper finical management but instead would have focused on teaching her french and dancing. There's only so much you can blame a person for not being good at something no one ever prepared them for. Also yeah it's not that hard to imagine someone who discovered their suicidal mother's dead body aged four, had a father who wouldn't let her live with him and his new family, and generally had no parental or friendly authority figures in her childhood might end up with the abandonment, trust and mental health issues that generally lead to bad marriages. Especially when extreme wealth doesn't always attract the best sort of people to you. Is she over glorified by some people, yes. But that doesn't mean she still isn't an interesting person who is worth making a youtube video or two about on the occasion.

@penelopelopez8296

Anyone who could waste money like she did is pathetic. I think about what people are going through today to make ends meet, then I think about this woman, Barbara Hutton, who was given more money than any one person should be allowed to have and it turns the stomach. What I would do for one million or even half of that. It’s nauseating.

Money does not buy taste. Everyone to their own I suppose. Some pieces were nice and others rather gaudy. Less is more, just my opinion.

I wonder if she knew that Cary Grant was gay.
@frodo322
@frodo322 4 года назад
He wasn’t. It’s never been proven, just a rumor. You know he married 6 times? That’s a lot of women for a ‘gay’ man. If he was gay he would have never married so many times.
@frodo322
@frodo322 3 года назад
@Quinn Chase again, no proof, only Rock Hudson and I don’t think he ever publicly came out. Other than rumors there’s no evidence. Neither Cary or James or Tyrone were gay. And actually Rock and James were not really friends, Rock didn’t really accept him, much less being lovers.

She was so beautiful but so selfish on the inside I never hear of her giving any of her money to charity or trying to help anyone except herself looks like to me all she did was spend her life buying diamonds and paying off men maybe that's why she was so unhappy she didn't do anything good for anyone else but

Shane Kasunich I don’t think you are right. She was generous.
@jackrobinson5974
@jackrobinson5974 5 лет назад
You're dead wrong. She was a very generous person and gave to many causes. She gave very lavish presents and gifts to both friends and strangers. Mostly anonymously that's why you didn't hear of it. If someone complimented her on a piece of jewelry for instance she often would give it to them. She bought a house for a long time friend. Do some research before you make such negative comments.

@@jackrobinson5974 That's just the trouble. I saw a documentary about her a few years ago, and she WAS generous to friends and sometimes strangers, but that was where it ended. Unlike the Rockefellers who gave away millions to various causes and charities, Barbara never did much for the public, and was criticised for that. Edit: If I gave wrong info, you can at least be polite when correcting me. I saw one documentary, I don't have time to waste doing research on semi-famous individuals. And for someone with a 'learning disability', I'm sure glad to be putting my PGCE to good use. I've spoken. Bite me.
@jackrobinson5974
@jackrobinson5974 5 лет назад
@@itsjemmabond Not true. Read her biography on Wikipedia. At the time of her death she had given away her entire fortune. She was criticized but not for her selfishness but for the fact she continued to give even though she had little left to give.
@Missditabomb

@@itsjemmabond She paid for the children of Tangier to go to school. She had an older building totally re-done for the kids and paid for all school expenses. (Books, writing supplies, school uniforms, teacher salaries...............all of it. For the brightest students who wished to further their education, she would pay for that too.) She did that for 25 years until she became unable to pay her bills. The U.S. embassy in Britain, (Winfield Manor), had been Barbara's home, but after the war, Barbara donated the house to the United States. It is an unbeleivable building with great design. (Also where Trump had given a lunch during his recent trip to Britain.) There are COUNTLESS stories like this, so maybe you should do research before commenting. Obviously, the documentary you watched was not very good.
