Did nothing wrong? She was in the seals territory and there were warnings signs posted and there was no one else in the water which should have been a huge giveaway
Old comment but in case you or the people up voting were wondering. That seal is a Hawaii Monk seal. The are endangered and protected under Federal Law by the MMPA as well as Hawaii State Law HRS 195D. Any interaction between a seal and human is going to be investigated to ensure there were no violations of laws. Unfortunately Monk seals have been disturbed or even killed and events seem to be escalating in the past few years. We just had a baby monk seal killed by an off leash dog. Two men were fined 20k.
I can't stop laughing at my thoughts on how this happened. Wife "I want to swim with the seal and her pup while you catch it on video from the balcony" Husband "ok but do it before the life guards arrive" Wife "harp..." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
people know nothing of nature. You want to know what she did wrong? Being there. Seals aren't usually this aggressive, but when any animal has babies she is going to be very protective. This means, stay away. Plus there was a sign on the beach that said "stay out of the water"
The signs were there for about a week and her hotel room is right there on the same beach and she didn't know ..I call bs ...her husband's video already showed the beach with good visuals of that beach ...so you stayed there and didn't see any signs that the seal and baby was there ...liar!
I was at Honaunau on the big island in the late 90's when a juvenile male monk seal showed up. He was trying to mate with anything that moved in the bay. I actually saw a father tell his 6-7 year old daughter to "go swim with the seal!". Tourists are STUPID!
Would you say the same thing if it was a shark? You gonna blame the shark? “I did nothing to provoke the shark! There was no signs or warnings that the shark was in the water! I didn’t know that it was there. I never see a shark when I left the safety of my canoe to say hi to the shark.” 🤯🙄😒 FYI sharks, seals, porcupine fish, sea urchin, salt water crocodiles, they live in the ocean. The ocean is their home. You are trespassing in their home. You provoked them by going in the water! Lo lo! 🤯😡 So if they bite you, thats all you boo! Cuz they told you for leave and you nevah!
I was totally laughing at her the first time I saw this video thinking "bachi🤣!" But upon further thought, she had a swimmers cap on🤔...maybe she had no idea because many of these serious swimmers will swim all the way down the beach or like a half or quarter mile or something(where there were no signs). When people were yelling at her, maybe she couldn't hear due to just swimming with the cap on too🤷♀️ I'm gonna give her the benefit of the doubt. But I don't know why nobody is giving full details on the whole story about how far she was, where she entered the water from, etc. This isn't thorough enough reporting if you ask me🤷♀️ or maybe they just want to scare the public to avoid seals(which is probably a good idea too)...but yeah doesn't mean this lady was 100% in the wrong.
Swimmers at that beach tend to go straight out from the left side of the beach and go straight out to a flag and then back. People do not tend to swim to kaimana beach from other beaches since the right side can be dangerous with it being rather shallow, covered with sea urchins, and it is the summer time so the southern portion of Oahu tends to have decent surf. Swimming straight out from Kaimana beach provides less waves and the water is deep enough to be able to swim a decent way out then back.
They can be expensive too. Touching one ( why anyone would get the urge escapes me) carries a 50 thousand dollar fine. If you can't pay the fine, the judge said hope ya got some time. Didn't say how long.
Everyone acting so holier than thou in the comment section. Ease off. Kaimana is ALWAYS full of people in the water, locals and tourists, even when the seal moms are on the beach. The swimmer easily could have entered the water when there were other people in the water and missed all of the people getting out and yelling at her because she had her swim cap on. Don't act like y'all are angels when it comes to wildlife.
