I look at death differently, it's more about giving them a good life and a good quality of it. Once they pass, there's more rats who are waiting to be loved. A shorter lifespan also means you have room for more that are lonely.

There's a children's farm not far from my home, and they let the children handle their rats. They are adorable - so friendly and clean. I have some great pictures of my daughter with a light-grey rat standing on her blonde hair. They are much more fun, interactive and friendly than the numerous hamsters I had as a child.

@@laur7247 Yes, exactly that. They let children bottle-feed the kids (baby goats), and handle/feed the chickens, rats, and other animals. There's horse rides, and tractor rides (mostly for the adults with children too young to ride the horses). They have "event" days when they sheer the sheep, or have unusual animals borrowed from other places like ostriches, alpacas, and donkeys. There's a cafe too. @jenv9782
@jenv9782 2 года назад
@@derealized797 Yes, so true. I have taken care of dozens of different species over the course of my life, most of them special needs animals. When I was torn apart with grief at their passing, people reminded me of the good life they had with me (as close to their natural habitat, and with love and good food), and this was somewhat of a consolation. Still, I live with this low level depression at how much animals suffer at human hands, especially food animals and such, and how stoic and heroic they are in the face of these cruelties.

@@jenv9782 the cat i have now was a stray that showed up at the door, he was real thin like he hadn't eaten in a long time, and the way he acted for a while seems he escaped abuse. He came in and insisted on staying and who could say no. It took time but he's a whole different cat now. He's a little overweight now, he went from never playing to bouncing off the walls and zooming around hyper. He shows ne his belly a lot so i guess there's been trust. Looking at him today you'd never know. I set up a little cat bed, his bed, at the foot of my bed, where he's usually curled up. He always comes over to me too, stretch out close against me, get pets and stare at me. I think i gave him his first normal life. He's a good cat. Rats are very sweet pets. It is heartbreaking that they don't live very long because if you treat them properly you will fall madly in love with them. They're playful, loving, very intelligent, and entertaining. I've had two pairs, it's important to get them in same sex pairs to avoid conflict and to give them a companion when you can't be with them all the time. They love healthy treats, and fresh foods like beans, yogurt, cheese, corn, green beans, cornbread, and the occasional cheese cracker is a favorite treat to supplement their pellets. They are fastidious cleaners, but they do dribble a little urine on their travels outside of the cage. Mine were free roaming, and would return to the cage for food, and night time sleep, but would mostly run around on the couch and wrestle each other, or snuggle up between my legs under the blanket and pass out with me petting them. Vet care is minimal, and it's easy to tell if they aren't feeling well. My two females lived for about three years, and my males a little over two. It was like losing a dog or a cat how much I loved them, and I had them cremated to be spread with my own ashes along with the many other animal friends I've loved over the years. I love my life, but I do look forward to the time I cross the Rainbow Bridge and all my furry companions and I are reunited for eternity. It wouldn't be heaven without them.

I've kept rats for over 20 years and have already had to say goodbye to about 50 rats... it's always difficult and it never gets easier! but you use this short time extensively and on the other hand, you have the opportunity to get to know new characters again and again if you integrate new noses into the pack! we also do everything for our noses... only recently we had to have one of our koji's legs amputated because he had a fast-growing and very aggressive bone tumor... Unfortunately, the way the animals are kept in the video is not correct, since rats are pack animals, keeping them in pairs is not species-appropriate and this can lead to behavioral problems and just because the two rats are still tame and playful does not mean that you can ignore it!

I never saw them as tiny dogs because they were so much their own selves. My first rat, Ben, was nearly four by the time he died having lived all through my sixth grade science class year, eoy adoption, 7th and 8th grade and more. He grew to be 18" nose to tail tip, was very mellow, sweet, playful and loved pulling the stuffing out from under the couch in the family room not endearing him to my mother, though I always stuffed it back after his excursions. Ben rode on my shoulders under my long hair through the mall and delighted friends and neighbors and strangers with his little ratty nose kisses, penetrating gaze and intelligence. I pray he's there at the rainbow bridge after I leave my human body to forgive me for my childish imperfect care, especially at the end of his life. I used to have pet rats (I think over 40 of them, though I could be wrong about that since I have a brain injury), and they were literally like little tiny dogs. They learned their names within two weeks or so, and would come to us when we called them. There was also a rat on America's Got Talent (Henta) who got The Golden Buzzer 🌟 from Simon. When I was 12 we found a black rat baby downtown, sitting out in the open in a parking lot. He (Rasputin) was so small he could barely walk, but we took him home in a shoebox and then transferred to him to an old hamster cage with lots of rags and wood shavings and I started hand feeding him. @@crism3lo If you purchase from a pet store you are probably just getting a breeder that was tamer than the rest. Generally it will be a fantastic pet but due to excessive inbreeding, tumors and cancer are common amongst pet rats. Very large tumors that can be quite distressing, tennis ball size. It's terrible. My wild rat and a few breeder pets I had died from illness. Small mammals don't deal with respiratory infections very well despite being tough. Still, my Peanut lasted a week and I've had some last a month fighting off the illness. We had to pull out the carpet underneath our furniture for the move and some we placed all furniture on one side of the room, rolled it up and carried it over rugroll. As we took a small break, before lifting their giant cage, we saw they moved their wood chip bedding like we did with the carpet and throw over everything which would be in their way. I was buffed and my ex was too. Since then we treaded them with way more awareness. Rats may be the smartest pets we have. But be aware their short lifespans will tear your heart apart.

But can they make ratatouille? They are so nice and would have one but losing them in two to three years would break my heart....

Rats are affectionate, intelligent, and just love human companionship. They are super sweet pets, and they love mini cookies as treats!

🥲 Absolutely precious. I've had many rats over the years. It's crushes me each time I've had to say goodbye.😪 Just as described in this story, rats are like little dogs. They are amazingly intelligent and loving animals. 💙 💙 💙

I had a pet rat I could take on walks out side on a leash. I made him a condo home, I miss him so much. R.I. P. Cuddles ❤️🤗. My cat's and him would play and sleep together. I would like to add that I was there when he was born, when I brought him home I told my cats he was family and they could not eat him. My oldest cat is soon to be 21. All of my family loved him.

Over a 20 year span, we have had 20 pet rats, bald ones, Dumbo's (my favorite) and I just loved them all. They all knew their names and we only fed them homemade organic food. They all lived to 2 to 2 and 3/4 years. They make the best pets.

Rats are exceptionally clean. They constantly groom and will not eat or sleep where they poop. They are also very intelligent. We loved building them mazes with blocks. They always within a couple tries found their way to the rewards!

I loved having pet rats. They’re so smart and adventurous. I never shut their cage because they knew when they wanted to get up or go to bed, usually same time as me. Funny seeing the one try and get into your cereal. Mine loooved Apple Jacks and would hide them in their cage for a late night treat. Lol!

@@redberries8039 never had an issue. Mine would go back in their cage to do their business. Rats are a lot more intelligent than hamsters.

Such VERY beautiful pets and companions. We've had over 50 ratty's over many, many years and cannot live without them. Some for a variety of reasons choose to live on their own, despite there always being multiple ratty's in our home. As an old retired woman, I have learned how to deal with this. the key issue being that they HAVE to be with me 24/7 and yes, even sleep with me. The bonding is unbelievable - Theresa UK
