A woman has taken her DIY skills ‘to the next level’ by making a stairlift to help her elderly rescue dogs get upstairs.
Adorable elderly pugs George, 13, and Bodhi, 10, plus Boston terrier Sam, 10, were surprised with an amazing stairlift to help them gain a little more independence when climbing up and down the stairs in their home.
When owner Sonya Karimi, 31, from New Orleans, Louisiana, adopted Bodhi two months ago, she noticed he had a torn knee ligament which made it difficult for him to walk the stairs.
So, occupational therapist Sonya decided to transfer her job skills working with elderly humans to her elderly dogs - coming up with the incredibly cute idea to build their own mini lift which even their younger pug Emery, four, enjoys.

I just googled “stair lift for dogs” after having the panicked thought of ‘what am I going to do one day when my dog is elderly ‘ bc I have a big staircase and 160lb Cane Corso... and my search led me here. This is genius and I hope you patent this and make this available to all of us like minded people . This wonderful invention would add longevity and dignity to our beloved dogs lives !!!!

I have an 11 year old German Shepard that was diagnosed with Degenerative myelopathy and she has lost the use of her back right leg and partially lost it in her left leg. Veterinary doctor said she is not in pain and mentally she is as sharp as she has always been. I will break the bank to keep her around. Gonna build this for her ASAP. Thank you for sharing this.

This appears to use a electric hoist, commonly found on Amazon and other sites, mounted inside the box with the cable run up to the top, over pulleys, and back to the box. There are a bunch of videos on how to use these hoists to make a garage elevator but this is another cool idea!
@StefanUrkel
@StefanUrkel 2 года назад
do you think the pulleys are what enable the winch and battery to be housed in the dog box, as opposed to having the winch and battery at top of stairs and using a hook onto a latch on the dog box to lower the dog box and pull it back up? I'm looking to do something similar but not sure what the advantage of the pulley is.. must be some physics behind it. also wondering if the only battery option is a boat/car battery and how safe those are to use indoors for this application, and if there are other (safer) options. lastly, wondering if the board with the wheel tracks needs tto be screwed into the floor or side wall at all.
@tornadokat
@tornadokat 2 года назад
@@StefanUrkel It's unfortunate that the video was just posted for entertainment and not as a how to video showing the construction. Adding the pulleys will double the effective lifting power of the winch and halve the speed. If the winch was a tiny one, I can see needing to double its power. You can easily find winches on Amazon that lift 220 or 440 pounds or 440/880 pounds using a pulley. I would think any of those would be strong enough without the pulley...? Maybe slowing it down is better for not making the dogs nervous, for example when it starts it doesn't make as much of a sudden movement. There is another video with an identical setup, although it doesn't have as completed of a look as this one and it also does not have any how to information. This one has to have a pulley because the winch appears to be at the bottom of the stairs, not mounted on the box, so the cable has to go to the top then back to the box to pull it up. It is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aaVTlPU_2oc.html. And here is another that shows really basic pictures of the construction and has the winch plus a car battery in the box so it is self-contained and uses a straight link to the top of the stairs: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-djnV-jj625Q.html. And in this video you can see how they made a mini elevator using the same winch idea except here the winch is at the top and runs straight to the box: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-inUEUIhoNSA.html.

@@tornadokat thanks for the reply! i got a winch from harbor freight for $100 but it's like one of those atv ones (a model mentioned in one of the video comments I saw). It does 2500lbs max, which seems like overkill. I will check out the other lower powered ones and see how much less they cost. the harbor freight one requires a battery and i'm a little apprehensive about getting a car/boat battery just for a winch and putting it indoors. wondering if there are other power sources/batteries that aren't so big and heavy that will do just as well. i just need enough power to lug up maybe 50 lbs at most (not counting the cart). My dog weighs 30. Sometimes I'd like to use the cart to run groceries up stairs rather than carry them (some items get heavy, like a case of bottled water). so you're saying witih each pulley added, it actually slows the speed down 50%?

Now you just need to build a remote into the floor of the trolley with 2 big buttons. One for UP one for down and train them to push whichever button they need. (One at each end) Or the floor is connected to a push button so when it's at the top and they stand on it, it automatically goes down and Visa Versa. The door could be spring loaded to close as it leaves the top or open as it reaches the top. Then they'd be independent...and fat! LOL
