As a pedestrian you have to always assume that the car doesn’t see you unless you make eye contact or get a non verbal cue. Unfortunately, no one stops for anyone anymore.
Several times I have almost hit people who were hidden by my A pillar. Most never even looked up. I on the other hand look both ways while crossing a one way street.
@@derekeuchner1800 yeah I always look two ways even on a one way!!! Better safe than sorry, and since I always walk my dog, I have to be more diligent than most.
Most drivers don't even yield to pedestrians. Especially on right turn on red. Drivers think it's a green light. I'm scared crossing busy cross walks even I'm right of way.
This is very sad. I suspect she forgot it was collection day and was rushing to put her bins out as the garbage truck was quickly approaching her house, who knows who’s actually at fault. This is why I put my garbage and recycling out the night before.
Everyone’s moving too fast. I have stopped on the dime several times in the past couple weeks for ladies who just wander into traffic without looking first.
@@rosemarymcgrory5678 god you feminists look for drama in everywhere and everything , that’s why you’re gonna be alone , he would’ve said guys if it was guys but no it was LADIES
Almost all car accidents could have been avoided. Yes. That’s why it’s called an accident. Most people tend to be careless and never think something bad will happen to them. We are all guilty of that at least sometimes. Unfortunately for some carelessness can end in tragedy. We need to be aware but also defensive. Never assume someone sees you or is going to stop especially as a pedestrian. I’ve had a few close calls myself where I’ve almost been hit. I try to stay aware of not only myself but others around me.
They mention the garbage truck's blind spot. What I am guessing is that someone got caught while the garbage truck was backing up, a very common maneuver for tight confines of residential streets.
I see so many people who uses crosswalks but never look towards incoming traffic while crossing. Some how they feel like the lines on the ground would protect them.
@@arthurbrumagem3844 here's just a thought: what if drivers looked up from their phones and paid attention. Everyone needs to pay attention but a car is a killing machine and legs arent
When a pedestrian- one should be looking for oncoming cars EVEN if the lights are in their favor and in a crosswalk. I do. You never know when that one idiot on 4 wheels is going to screw up. It's a battle the pedestrian won't win. I've seen them in touristy areas walk out between parked cars (something we learned in kindergarten not to do) stare upward at the sky as if there was something fascinating in the cloudless sky, or straight ahead as if they didn't see the cars coming when NOT using a crosswalk. Basically trying to pretend they aren't responsible for their actions. Stepping out in front of a car in a crosswalk that is too close to stop will NOT result in the driver being cited or arrested if you get hit. However you might be dead. OR cited because even crosswalks require prudence. But- never trust traffic- people blow by pedestrians who ARE already in the crosswalk when they approach or walking with a light. Some drivers think they're too good- though they aren't.
I had a very close call when I walked a cross walk. The mother F was on his cell phone as he made a left turn and wasn’t paying attention as he nearly hit me. There are other cases where pedestrians are walking across the street as they used there cell phones and not paying attention to anybody but their cell. I purposely honk at them just to get their attention.
Treat every driver as if they are a dumbass that is texting and driving. Never trust that they are going to stop or obey the traffic laws. Save your own life.
Rewatch the entire video and count all the times cars: 1) Failure to signal lane changes / turns, 2) Failure to come to a complete stop BEHIND the line and/ or crosswalk, 3) Tailgating. Nearly every car shown is breaking some other law, and it all adds up to unsafe driving practices leading to accidents. If cops would start ticketing for all the smaller stuff, it might lead to people realizing they suck as drivers if their only criteria is "I didn't get caught" or, "I didn't get into an accident." People generally drive too fast, too close, rolling-stops, and push the limits. It saves one or two minutes, but takes unnecessary risks. But, until the cops 100% enforce these other laws, people just go insane for stuff like taking 3 seconds at a Stop to be sure its safe, or getting a few car-lengths between cars in traffic, or actually going the posted speed limit!!! Try it- try following every traffic law and good practice. Its called "mindfulness" about your own driving. Once you get good at it, you look around and realize people often go insane to tailgate you or flick their lights or honk when you are breaking no laws and following the Rules of the Road. "Safety campaign"? Just enforce all the rules. People in their car-bubble often have zero social responsibility that driving is a privilege not a right!
Exactly! But NO, instead of observing & citing those clear causes, a long term, intensive, citywide study will be planned & taxpayer funded in order to investigate the mysterious so-called “systemic causes.”They’ll probably end up blaming “systemic racism.” Seriously. 🙄
@@poempadgett4664 Why did systematic racism come into the discussion? John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Mark 1:15 - “The time is fulfilled,” He said, “and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!”
exactly, I experienced this just this past weekend when a man pushing a baby stroller just walked into the street. The street is for cars, pedestrians need to look left, right, left before entering... we may need some national PSA's on how to cross the street. Just like we all heard "wash your hands" all 2020.
The garbage truck driver on my block was driving so fast when he picked up my can that it split in half. It's so sad so senseless. May she rest in peace and sincerest condolences to the family
They are flying down the street in the neighborhood I pick up kids. Just this week I had to slam on the brakes (school bus) because this idiot ran a stop sign coming off a side road. 🤦♀️😤
@@brandonabbott6225 I think Steve was making a general comment on the rise of accidents involving cars and pedestrians, not necessarily about this specific case.
just a hunch. I see empty recycle cans on one side and full on the other. Looking next to the yellow body tarp theirs a recycling bin next to it. COULD it be she missed putting her bin out on time and she was chasing the truck down? Remember in this case the truck is a RHD. And if she was in the middle of the road so the LH side of the truck and she stepped in front right when the truck was taking off IN THE BLIND SPOT she'd be turned into a speed bump. RIP very sad and tragic. This is something that will never leave the thought of someone for the rest of there life.
How absolutely terrible. While at a stop light in my small town I watched a young boy on foot the other day waiting for the signal to tell him to go. When it said to walk, not only did one of the green arrows light making traffic turn his way, but then the “stop hand” signal popped up while he was still going across. He was running from the start. It only gave him about 3 seconds. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
Idk about where everyone else lives but here in my state, these trash truck drivers are in as big of a rush as these UPS and Amazon drivers! I can easily see how this could happen especially if she was pulling it behind her( like most do) and stepped out into the street to turn it around. This big trucks don't stop on a dime, and those drivers go 90 to nothing!
They can't go 90 they have limit and um I've never stepped out to the street to take my trash out. When i cross the street to get my car i look both ways if there is a car i wait till it leaves and then cross. This stuff happens because pedestrians are dumb i seen a kid get crushed by a bull dozer cause he skated onto a construction site with earplugs smashed right into it.
It can happen when forgetting to take the trash out the night before and trying to beat the truck picking up trash, to the point where you’re in the way, and you’re in their blind spot.
Very tragic. My condolence to the family. I was on my way to work one afternoon. Sun was shining. My suv was struck on the driver side by a large garbage truck. The driver of the truck claimed that he did not see my suv. The fact was that he ran the stop sign and that's what the officer who reconstructed the accident said as well. The officer also found out that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and didn't not have insurance.
I'm so sorry. I hope it all gets worked out. I was hit by a speeding tractor-trailer in March 2020. My 90-day old car was totalled, and my wrist was broken. He never stopped.
Unfortunately most people walk don’t look traffic before they’re step down sidewalk. Please look traffic first before you go that is only way protect yourself, it doesn’t matter you have right away to go first or green light 💡.
Why don’t these trucks have back up cameras? Unacceptable, I’ve seen these trucks almost hit others backing up on my street because of the blind spots spoken about behind the truck.
Seeing how fast these trucks move through the neighborhood backing up around tight courts and streets, I always wait for them to leave before walking out into the street.
Not to blame pedestrians but watch what's happening when you cross the street. Do not assume cars will stop for you. I see so many people think because they have the right away, cars will stop. Too many drivers are distracted now especially being on their phone.
I almost got hit by a impatient driver while crossing the street. The crosswalk light told me to walk and I was halfway though when this car had the nerve to keep going although I was right in the middle of the crosswalk and almost hit me. If I didn't stop halfway and he hadn't stopped to honk at me, I'd be hurt or dead
How about Pedestrians learn to watch out, too. Sad to think, but when Not in a vehicle/behind the wheel, they tend to assume their Right(s) of Way overrides the damage a 2-ton piece of metal can cause. People need to be reminded: IT'S EASIER FOR YOU TO STOP than a vehicle.
One thing they should do is enforce the law with people on their cell phones while operating a vehicle…..!!!! I I see people doing 80mph with phone in hand and at every stop light….!! Put the phone down and drive….!!!
I’ve pedestrians never seem to look left or right even when they are in right of way I think people need to be more careful cause there’s many crazy drivers or speeding drivers and big trucks that can easily not see u I’m always extra careful when crossing the street
(Please excuse my grammar) There has been a growing number of drivers going the wrong direction on freeways in California.. I am not kidding . The incidents that we hear about on the news Are the ones that are reported . Chp is not reporting all incidents of wrong way drivers
For one thing, people are driving too fast. Additionally, there is virtually NO enforcement of laws against using cell phones while driving. Neither may have been the issue in this case, but in general, they need to be enforced. Especially since the pandemic started, I am startled by how fast people are driving, both on highways like 101, and neighborhood streets. And I see people driving distracted by their phone all the time.
When they get caught it is enforced. I got ticket for just glancing at my phone while at a red light. Even put a point on my insurance. But I agree I think all laws need to be enforced more especially in California. We need law and order!
That engineer's comments about fixing what's bad at that intersection and then using it as a pattern to fix others with the "same characteristics" has good intent. The downside is it also makes it sound like it's easy to fix things, thinking that there has to be a mathematical or mechanical root cause. The part of that 'equation' that's missing is that there are human drivers in the cars, some of whom would rather pay attention to their phones than the roadway.
Holy crap. That is six minutes away from my aunt who is on Benbow avenue. I live in Ontario Canada and we are very close. I have visited her twice and plan to again after the pandemic. She is like a mother to me. She is a nurse and is always on the road because of her job. I'd hate to lose her to a preventable accident considering how the rates of these types of incidents are rising. Such a tragedy for the victim and her friends and family. I feel so bad for the victim and those who knew her. All accidents are terrible but the ones that really take the cake and hurt the most are the ones that are preventable.
The poor woman and driver. It must be Hard carrying the death of a fellow human being on your conscience. May she Rest In peace. Condolences to her family and all her love ones,
My car has a horrible blind spot. A can’t see a person if they are standing in the right sport, very very scary!! This is terribly unfortunate for the family, the driver to have this in his conscious. Prayers for everyone involved!!
Pedestrians in general are VERY much a part of this situation. How many times have people been spotted with their heads buried in a mobile, not paying the SLIGHTEST attention to the world around them, DARING drivers to hit them??!!
Even when they aren't doing what you said, they reach the corner of the sidewalk and just walk into the street, without looking left, right, left to make sure nothing is coming. Just this weekend a man did this to me pushing a baby stroller.
Don't mess around big equipment I'm a professional driver I drive dump truck for a living there are many blind spots you will be crushed like a fly with a fly swatter very unfortunate accident also while traveling down the freeway don't ride up alongside of truck and trailers get out and away from semi trucks as soon as possible people will ride alongside a semi or dump truck and stay right along the trailer or the tractor very dangerous especially if there is a blowout of a tire on a semi lots of Steel chords the explosion sounds like quarter stick of dynamite steel and rubber can go right through the side of a window of a passenger car not to mention the driver getting freaked out from the tire explosion and possibly veering off the road blind spots are the primary concern again I emphasize don't ride along side of semis
These are very reason to have your minds clear, because we've been really seeing and dealing with some strange and difficult happenings around us focus is thrown off with a lot of people now!! Pray to God for clarity and strength!!
I know sometimes my neighbor across the street forgets to put his trash out in time for when they pick up trash on his side of the street. Whenever that happens he usually just walks his trash bin across the street & puts it next to my trash bin to get picked up. So I'm thinking it was some situation like that where the lady tried to hurry up across the street but ended up getting hit. Def a sad way to go especially since it's something that was so easily avoidable. I usually just take my trash out the night before.
stop the red light runners, and do like oregon, where anyone crossing a street from a corner sidewalk has the right of way. The cops even put people at the cross walks and will ticket drivers that dont stop . Granted a lot of people in the bay area are lacking in common courtesy
Drivers need to be aware more as ever! Doesn’t matter if pedestrian was at fault they always have the right away. So sad! This doesn’t mean pedestrians should be reckless either they need to be as careful!
I don’t believe pedestrians always have the right of way. That’s what there are cross walks. Then people would be able to walk out on the street whenever they want and claim they have the right of way. Not true.
I'm a sanitation worker for Waste Pro and we can't stand it when people run up to our trucks at the last minute with their trash carts, cans, bags. It's incredibly dangerous. Or when they let their kids run along side our trucks. Put your trash out the night before! Don't let your kids play around our trucks! Common sense seems to be dying off.
It's drivers in such a damn hurry, you see it all the time. No one feels like they should have to wait, we've been reprogrammed to believe that we are the most important person in the world.
I really don't understand how this happened. I'm confused about how she got hit by the garbage truck while pushing the trash cans out to the sidewalk. Here, outside of my house, if i were to take trash out to the sidewalk I would never even cross into the path of the truck. The truck would have to turn and jump the curb onto the sidewalk to hit someone taking out the trash unless the person walked into the street for some dumb and unnecessary reason.
"Safety campaign" is just theater from the city to say that they are taking action when in reality they aren't going to. Rules are not being enforced. Drivers feel entitled to do whatever they want. In fact, if you actually follow the rules you can even trigger road rage. Try to actually follow the speed limit or stop for 3 full seconds at a stop sign. You will get tailgated, cut off, or honked at. Last week, I was tailgated closely on the highway even when I was in the right most lane and another car was in front of me. Every time I'm on the highway, I see many drivers jockeying around to get ahead of each other and tailgating. They keep hitting the brakes as they realize that they are about to get too close to another car and are getting nowhere faster. What a waste of gas and brake pads. People are driving like gas is cheap. I try not to go out as much these days with all the madness going on. I also switched to driving SUV to be safer from all the maniacs on the road. It's a hybrid and it gets better mpg than the car I had before. And no, I'm not getting a Tesla or any other EV. They are too expensive right now for me. If anyone wants to get ahead of me, I just let them get past and get out of my life.
If you as a pedestrian get hit by a big loud smelly trash truck It Is Your Fault.! It cannot sneak up on you unless your head is where it don't belong , Especially when walking in traffic.
Just take the trash out the night before, safely, and stay safe!! And when and if you either walk, drive know and think that someone may not see you, so always stop, look & listen... No cell phones and if you must only one earbud, and phone in pocket.
I still remember the signs in my first grade school room. Look left then right then left again. Cross at the green not in between. If you are walking on a road way with no sidewalk walk against traffic and look the drivers in the eye. Also be prepared to jump out of the way at any moment. Bikes always go with traffic because they are moving vehicles. Also my Dad used to say you can be dead right but your still dead
Prayers for the family, that’s terrible… I hope the driver was following the speed limit, none the less it sounds like there needs to be more training for those drivers.
No one’s going to comment on the city employees talking smiling while shaking a spray can as if nothing happened and the body is behind them under a yellow tarp wtf
tradgedy Is every other day for people in that line of work, so no they aren't going to behave like u or me around a person that just got killed. This would be like there 50th body of the the year.
They can’t smile while at the job? To them it’s another day at the job. They will pay their respects to the victim in beginning but don’t need to mourn all day if they don’t know them.
I know of an accident where an elderly woman fell under a trailer(she tripped walking on the sidewalk) right next to a hospital and despite being next to one of the best hospitals in the country, she sadly passed. The driver himself was never the same and ended up becoming an alcoholic because of the incident and lost his job.
Well let's see, if she was hit on the street, then yeah most likely it was her fault. These trash drivers have a job to do and so do the residents, one of those is having your shit out and ready for pick up so you don't have to run out of the house in your PJ's. It's a lot easier for a pedestrian to see and hear the big-ass trash truck than it is for the driver to see someone running out trying to get the barrels curbside.
I'm sorry but I don't understand how a person is hit and killed by a garbage truck putting out her garbage.. I'm on the sidewalk, it's on the street.. I put my garbage out on the sidewalk grass, they, are still in the street.. I'm so lost and don't understand how this is a problem..
