I had a groundhog when I was a kid. Her mother and siblings had gotten hit on the road outside our house. It was like having a guinea pig with the intelligence of a dog. When she got older, we gave her to a guy who worked with my dad that had a big farm out in the country and we would go over and visit every now and then and bring her bananas. She always remembered us and would come from under the shed where she lived to get belly rubs and even show us her babies when she had them. Such awesome little animals...

There is a park near me where a family of groundhogs lives. They’ve learned that people having a picnic will give them food if they look cute. 😁 You have to calm and patient for them to approach you. Once you earn their trust, they will take food from your hand.

I just love Hazel. She is a doll. She is a handful and must run up a water bill like a teenager in the shower. That aside, she has brought much joy into the house. Nice work in taking care of her. ❤

Aw, I luv her little noises! Soo cute! My Father had a groundhog living under the porch for yrs. His philosophy was it's not bothering me, so we'll coexist. When my Dad died, and I moved in, I had to tear down the porch, cos there were holes in the floor. There were nothing but tunnels underneath, and no dirt...lol. ❤

Hazel is one very, very lucky creature. The possum eating next to Hazel reminds me of all the years I enjoyed feeding possums on my back deck. They are so gentle and willing to share space and food with any other animal. My cat would be eating next to the possums with their babies.

I live in the city/country I've had my fair share of interactions with wild animals and I've had to relocate about 3 groundhogs since living here they're so damn cute how could you hurt them even though they can be very destructive, I always think of the groundhog in the movie classic Caddyshack.🤣✌️

We run an unofficial sanctuary, mostly for birds (unwanted hens and roosters, ducks, sheep and a few others), maybe 40 or so critters in all, and the vet, feed etc bills every year are scary. I can't imagine what it costs to look after 350 critters in one year. Well done to this lady and her sanctuary, wish there were more people around who did this.

Who knew? I'm from the Mountains of North Carolina and my Dad used to have a dental office in Ashe County. I would look out the window and see this enormous groundhog which used to live behind there. So, it's possible for them to get really big when they're adults. We just don't give enough gratitude to the people who are Wildlife Rehabilitators. But, as she said, the goal is always to return them to their natural environment and it does take special licenses to care and keep wild animals in your home. A regular person can get in quite a lot of trouble for doing this. So, many times if you see a fawn it's Mother is coming back for it. Just leave it alone. It's not been abandoned. We do a lot of harm by touching animals and getting our smells on them. Then, the Mother will actually not want to take care of them! Great story! Warmest regards from Greensboro, NC USA

When I was growing up in a small town in PA, a lady across the street had a pet groundhog named “Sarge”. He loved us neighborhood kids & would cross a rather busy road to visit all of us. His owner would come & get him & tell him to “never cross that street again Sarge!!” After I left home I heard he was hit & killed, but no one really knew for sure. 😢 He was the sweetest thing!!! ❤

Hazel is adorable! I remember seeing a short clip of a groundhog sitting on it's hindquarters who had a big slice of pizza facing two big dogs barking away behind a glass door, it was hilarious how the groundhog enjoyed torturing them a little bit. Funny animals, I hope you and Hazel have a great life together, she is very lucky to have you as her human.

Groundhogs, ground squirrels and the different species similar to these all seem to be very sweet but some also very rambunctious. It's always fun to watch videos with them including tree squirrels and while they may be tough at times to deal with, if not all the time the common thread seems to be there's a very special human-animal bond there when it's the right human dealing with them. I think it's why so many people love to feed these animals and keep a few close to the house just to have them in their lives. BOY that's a large number of animals to care for in a given year that you listed. GOOD on ya!

Remember there's love Faith and Hope. Love is the greatest of all!!❤️ sees ❤️!! Heart sees heart. When that connection is made it becomes everlasting. Most of the other animals that are outdoors never get to experience the love the laughter or the joy that your little buddies inside do. We never know when God is going to call on us to save a life. I have used plant cages to keep my cats out of my plants. I had one that looked like a bird cage and I also used wire hangers to make a loose dome that the plant anchored to as it grew. That one was a pathos which is very viney.

I like your bird cage suggestion! Immediately I also was thinking of how her plants could be “rescued”! I think elevation is the key here. Hanging plants or wall mounted planters w/plants seem like a good idea. I don’t know how high a beaver can climb...? Although, it should be a non-issue if there’s nothing to climb which would be the case in the suggestions above...?!

My partner and I volunteered at a wild life rehabilitation center for 6 years. Groundhogs, in my opinion, are one of the sweetest, most affectionate of all wild animals.

I’ve had a few houses with groundhogs in the yard an love to watch them. Years ago I had one living under a shed and we always referred to it as “he”. Well at least until a bunch of little ones appeared one day! It was fun watching them grow up. What I never realized is they will climb up into small trees. I was shocked to see that.

I think the work animal rehabbers do is awesome. Many of these damaged or orphaned animals would not survive without people like this wonderful woman to bring them through their time of need.
