A woman who went mute for two months after a mystery brain injury has finally got her voice back -- but now speaks with FOUR different accents. Doctors were perplexed after countless tests failed to explain why Emily Egan, 31, lost the ability to speak. And when she finally began to talk again, Emily's voice sounded nothing like the Essex accent she had before. Emily now mostly speaks with a Polish accent - even in 'broken English' at times - but her voice can suddenly change to sound French and Italian as well.

When I sustained a concussion a frenchwoman who spoke no english helped me! And for a few hours afterwards I became almost fluent in french forgetting english! Wish under normal circumstances I could speak french so well!

I think the biggest takeout from this video is that we not only have a problem with discrimination based on skin colour. I would like everyone to really reflect on discriminating migrants based on their language ability and realise that's a serious problem just as it was described in this video. I'm a migrant myself and it concerns me that this problem is never brought up in mainstream media. I think now that we have such a strong BLM movement, we should also realise that there are so many other forms of discrimination that happens in our society (nationality, religion, gender) and makes peoples lives miserable. I'd hope we don't work at "one at a time" but rather act strongly to increase people aware that we are all made equally, however not given equal chances in life.

Wow, I wish we knew if the accent is based on sound memory or muscle memory... Just imagine that all the languages are somehow connected no matter what language family we're using. I hope that there will be some study done on this case. But I also hope for the lady to get better or the way she wishes. Sorry for my english, have a nice day.

Just went through a bunch of similar videos, and almost all of that strange syndrome affected persons got dogs around them.. Anyway, i think they should be encouraged to learn the language that fits their new accent the best, in order to outsmart the brain and back engineering to the native language. Just like beeing a foreigner somewhere for long enough to start adopting to the local speaking habbits. It would be great to know if there are any people who already took that steps and see if it was easier for them to get along with a new language. Regarding your assumption of the connection of languages (romanian/latin) i got to agree, if there wouldn't be that aussie woman who woke up with chinese 'accent'. At this point i wonder if it's just that accent or even the grammar that makes it more difficult for them to get back. She indeed sounded like an absolutley well educated english speaking woman with chinese as first language, even her intonation was more of asian style than how a sentence is used to be intonated in english. So there must be more to the RAM/ROM? in the brain than in the path from the brain to the muscular system. Anyway, all the affected people, forgive me my possible meaningless thoughts on this, but try to get the most out of it for yourself, if you can't change it, adopt to it.. take it as a huge advantage to discover the planet.

It's actually not accents, you just perceive her speech impediment as a foreign accent. She can't pronounce her W's and say V instead, so it sounds Russian to you, for example.

After a car accident I developed some sort of Southern USA accent... & I'm a California girl, born & raised (like totally). I don't think it's a true accent from any particular region - but rather Southern-ISH - maybe closest to North Carolina, since they don't have a pronounced twang, or drawl.

My accent changes too. It is amazing to see another with a condition that reminds me of it. My head might have been injured as a toddler. Along with accents my facial expression and body language changes as well. I am also a partial empath.

It pains me how people with such conditions may feel...people with all conditions really. I really hope people love you and don't mistreat you; it hurts me whenever I hear of someone being bullied for their illness/condition because I undergo the same hell; I'm blind and get bullied for it. So really...I cry whenever someone says they struggle fitting in due to a disability.

So basically a British person experienced how a foreigner can feel in some situations while living in England. This video needs more exposure so people could understand that just because you have a funny accent doesn't necessarily mean that you are worse or inferior to the locals. Give us some slack goddammit! :D ~Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

exactly, discriminating people based on their nationality should be brought up in media more often

It is a big issue. I used to work hospitality in UK . Many times after people heard my accent they changed attitude towards me 180 degrees. Mostly because racist people I left UK. But well, Europeans aren’t black so that is normal no one give a shit. All that BLM in UK is a joke. I never seen single example of discrimination towards different skin colour as people are scared to speak up, but to slag off someone from eastern/central Europe a lot of people don’t have an issue with it

Truly, I am pained to know that it is difficult for someone to interact with other people because of their condition/disorder/disability. I know that for a fact as I am blind and am discriminated against for that. I wish her best of luck and if in any way I may appear of help, I shall.

Come to Scotland. Everyone has his own accent in here, you'll fit right in. There's a reason why Scotland voted to remain in the EU, unlike England. I lived in England several years ago and the people were fed up of hearing weird accents back then, I can only imagine how worse it got since. Scottish people have different mentality. Less posh, more down to earth and don't seem to mind foreigners too much, as of yet.

8 years in England never ever I have experienced even slightest form of discrimination or racism. England is probably one of the most welcoming countries in the Western Europe for immigrants. It's simple, you work hard, you try to adapt and work on your English (improving accent helps a lot) and there shouldn't be problems. I really wanted to stress this, especially now with all the craziness with blm.

It must be difficult, I hope you are coping well with it. I change accents a lot, although mainly strong UK, American and Canadian accents, but it seems to be linked with if I meet someone with an accent for even a short period of time. I'm British Canadian however I have grown up in the UK where there is no strong accent and never had Canadian accent as a child. Atm apparently I'm a mixture of Bristol (never been but met someone a couple times about 15 years ago) American and no accent. I have epilepsy and a tumour though so the thinking is that it's linked. Funnily enough my daughter has her dad's Wolverhampton accept but I never "adopted" it which is interesting. I've spent adulthood with people trying to guess where I'm from when they hear me talk.
