A 57-year-old Tamil Nadu woman named S Pechiyammal, disguised herself as a man for 36 years in Thoothukudi. After being in situations where she felt unsafe, she decided to wear a veshti and dress like a man. Nobody at her workplaces or her neighborhood had suspected that she was living under an assumed identity, till she revealed her true gender. She became 'Muthu' as she feared abuse, she told The Quint.

In the past I have dressed more masculine so not to attract attention but people's comments- thinking- labelling OTHERS is about THEM not ME - I live in England UK- definately MORE glam for me- I am doing nothing wrong- I never slept with ANYBODY apart from my partner- I don't show cleavage/ shoulders/ legs/ backside/ ass. What I have learnt is NEVER change yourself for others- unless you are a spy. @@davidmaldonado7806 I hadn’t thought of it that way. I don’t necessarily disagree, but from what I understand, they took on the physical role of male to protect themselves and have financial status. Their daughter now calls them mother instead of father now that they came forward with the truth. I don’t think of this as a transgender story as much as a woman taking on the status of a male in order to provide a living. I could be wrong. It’s a fantastic story, either way.

Your logic is flawed... Education will not change instincts of human nature. People will someway seek things they want. It is mentality of kid, not education. Indian parents should be blamed because, I bet majority of their parents don't talk to their children about sex stuff because it is a taboo. There’s one in Malayalam already, a 90s movie, I don’t remember it’s name, but i watched this long ago.. the plot reads, “Fifteen-year-old Parvathi (Annie) witnesses her family getting murdered by Jaganatha Varma (Narendra Prasad). She runs away from them to save her life. To prevent getting caught, she disguises herself as a boy named Thomas and starts living as a servant in a house of bachelors.” Malayalam industry made movies that were way ahead of its times, it took inspiration from life around. Hindi film Badhai Ho too was made in 90’s in Malayalam, but it wasn’t a comedy, but a serious one, on how an adult brother well into his late 20s raises a new born sister to his older parents. His mother dies while birthing the child & father abandons the family, as he loses his wife. The brother sacrifices everything including his love, to bring this girl up, like a father would.

Animals can never change. I think their are enough teachings for them to know what is right and what is wrong but they still choose to do it because the freedom and lack of consequences. I have the highest respect for this Muthu Appa. Very intelligently handled herself though was an unimaginable sacrifice. It's sad that a woman has to fear her surrounding. This speaks that India has no independence.

This is a norm in south India. They’re very aware of their rights. My 85 year old grandmother knows that she’s eligible for senior citizen pension (of a very small amount) in Kerala, she literally filled in the form herself & submitted in the office to avail the pension. She has all her children & grandchildren taking very good care of her, yet, she values her rights.

This is the truth of our society. Women who have no one become vulnerable targets. Actually even women who are not alone still are targets especially when the situation is in favour of the predator. It’s so unsafe and it’s this way at every level educated or not educated. Young or aged.Why? Why? Why? It’s a helpless situation.

Indeed. But patriarchal society is not supposed to be like this and indeed does not have to. Look how Jesus treated woman, even "fallen" women. Like they were precious. The Bible says a man that finds a wife finds a good thing. A marriage where a woman is treasured is indeed a good thing 🙂

There’s nothing to be proud about this. This was an act of desperation & the will to live a fulfilling life, that she wouldn’t have, had she lived a woman. She would’ve been shunned by society, her character would be assassinated a 1000 times.

Master did what needed to be done for her family & for her safety! I've heard of a woman in Africa who did the same thing. She disguised herself as a man to work in the mines, better pay. She worked there for 30 plus years. During which she became a supervisor. She was able to keep a roof over their heads, put all her children through school & even bought a few properties. Unfortunately negative circumstances forced her to reveal her true gender earlier than plan. Some of the men that worked for her didn't believe that she was women because she worked just as hard as the men.

I can relate to her..many incidents and discrimination.. Yesterday only i was walking and was in hurry in busy road behind me two boys gave derogatory comment iska doodh piyega ? I didn't look back as i was in hurry and getting late as well as scared but felt really bad the only thought that came to my mind is so disrespectful upbringing they got.

Pakistani and Indian men often treat women and girls very very badly. She was clever enough to realize that as she was a single mother, she would not be able to keep her daughter safe because a man could break in and rape and kill both her and her daughter. But as a father - instant respect, nobody will try to take advantage of daughter. She kept her daughter safe by doing this. God bless her and her daughter. 💖💖

My 2 cents is simple. She was so afraid of discrimination. Laws should be tightly enforced to curb discrimination amongst gender. And where rape is concerned, don't speak to me hogwash about being human. Castration is highly recommended.
