This event was recorded live on April 17, 2024.
In her new book Over the Influence: Why Social Media Is Toxic for Women and Girls - And How We Can Take It Back, communication professor and CNN Opinion contributor Kara Alaimo reveals how social media is affecting every aspect of the lives of women, girls, and nonbinary people. Alaimo (CUNY Graduate Center Ph.D. ’15, Political Science) discusses why women experts who use social media to bolster their professional profiles often end up with fewer followers, reposts, and opportunities than men in their fields. She shows how what’s happening on social media is making the offline world less safe for women, and how the feminist movement has been co-opted by brands on social media, ushering in a wave of backlash. Alaimo speaks these issues and her book with Madison Malone Kircher, a reporter covering internet culture for The New York Times.
Presented with the Center for the Study of Women in Society.
