Thank you so much Eric for taking us with you ! This was great !! I am very happy for the winner and her speach was heart warming. They were all wonderful books although I had a preference for Elif Shafak (I love this women!). I loved you showed your conversation with her (and with Virginia Woolf, I am sure where she is she has answered you 😂). I am glad you enjoyed your evening.
The Book of Form and Emptiness was my third favorite of the shortlist and still a five-star read for me-that’s how much I liked this shortlist! Ruth Ozeki’s acceptance speech was gracious and inclusive. Because I lived in San Francisco and frequented the main branch, it was nostalgic and brought back warm memories for me. Thanks for uploading this video and making us feel as if we were there.
I knew who’d won and I was still holding my breath! It may not have been my favorite, but still a worthy winner and Ozeki’s humble speech was just so lovely. Thank you so much, Eric, for giving us this glimpse into the festivities.
Hi Eric! I was in London two weeks ago for the very first time from the states and it was so so lovely. I had such a great time. I loved seeing all of your London footage as well as the prize footage. Thank you so much for filming and sharing!
This was a really great video. Thanks so much for taking the time to put it together and get it up so quickly. I watched the ceremony on the livestream but got a much better sense of the whole evening from what you’ve shared here. I was pretty surprised by the winner and loved the speech. I agree with you and Anna that this was a strange year and so I suppose a surprise winner makes sense. So glad you got to meet Maggie Shipstead and I loved your moment with Virginia!!!
Thank you, Eric! This was lovely! I haven’t read any of Ruth’s books, but I think she is wonderful after giving such a great speech. Big surprise, feels like it might have been a bit of a compromise pick, but congratulations to her!
Thank you Eric !! I loved coming along with you to the party, it looked so much fun!! I am very pleased that Ruth Ozeki won. Great Circle was my personal favourite but I can really see why The Book of Form and Emptiness was the winner. It is such a many layered novel . I still think of Annabelle often , one of my favourite book characters of the short list.
So pleased you vlogged the party, looks like you had a wonderful evening, and made me feel like I was almost there. Ruth Ozeki‘s speech was perfect, and although it wasn‘t my favourite , I am still pleased for her. Looking forward to your 2023 prediction video already 😁 (although I am not quite ready for it to be 2023 just yet!)
I remember last year when you did the video about the ceremony and it inspired me to follow the list this year. Thanks for letting us follow along, Eric! So pleased for Ozeki (although the book was at the bottom of my list!).
I really enjoyed this, Eric! Thanks for taking us to the party. Very cool that you met Elif Shafak and Maggie Shipstead! What a lovely celebration. I’ve enjoyed following the prize for the first time this year.
wow! I can't believe how excited and anxious I was to hear the winner even though this was weeks ago and I wasn't even there! I've added Ruth Ozeki's book to my list and I look forward to reading it!
Virginia looked much more spiffed up than when we saw her! Thank you for bringing us along. The look at your faces when the book won was great. Liked hearing her talk about all the ways she has been supported and shouted out the new author of Nightcrawling. So great to see her to use that platform to spotlight the community. I have it from the library and will be breaking it open this weekend.
Yes, I think someone has been caring for Virginia more and paid flowers by her. And I loved hearing how Ozeki was a teacher of the author of Nightcrawling. It’s fun leaning about author connections like that.
So wonderful! This gave me such warm feelings and it was lovely to get a peek into the after party. So happy for Ruth Ozeki! I was a bit disappointed that Louise Erdrich wasn’t able to come-I was looking forward to your cameo with her.
Thank you Eric for taking us with you - I always look forward to your party vlog 😊 the winner was the only one I had read from the shortlist but I was surprised to see it win - lovely speech by Ruth Ozeki 😊
This is one of the very special things about your chanel... But it would be just as wonderful if you were waiting for the announcement in front of your computer with high anticipation and your dinner looked so good!!😲. Thanks for taking us along.... Again!!💙💕
Thanks for taking us along! I want to come next year from here - Colorado USA … am geeking out and surprised this win. Thought it would be Great Circle and loved Sorrow and Bliss as well as Island of Missing Trees! I predicted correctly last several years but have not yet read Ozeki so now I have next week’s vacation book picked out!! Yay for the Womens Prize….and yays to you and Anna leading us up to another year of winners!
As always, it's been an absolute delight to read all the longlisted/shortlisted books and go on this journey with yourself and Anna. Thank you for taking us along with you. Can't wait until next year to do it all again! 📚😊
I was sooooo happy for Ruth Ozeki, her reaction was just wonderful 🥰 I had never read her work before and it really surprised me how much I loved it. Thank you for sharing the last part of your W.P 2022 journey with us, loved being along for the ride 💚📚💚
Well that was a surprise - I thought it would either be Great Circle, Sorrow & Bliss or The Island of Missing Trees!! But her speech was v heartfelt & brought a tear to my eye. Loved your shirt & Anna's dress - you both looked great.
Thanks for covering the prize again! I love following it along with you. I still have to read two more shortlisted books once they arrive for me at the library, and I'll try to get through the rest of the longlist too so it's not quite over for me yet... but it's definitely been another exciting buildup to the winner. Looking forward to next year :)
Thanks so much for the video, so we could be really there, too - for its 27th prize. I haven't read Ruth Ozeki, adding to the list! Lovely to hear the affirming speech from Ruth, from Elif Shafak about it all being 'joyful & supportive' & not competive. Oh & great shirt & pre-award meal!
I agree with you that I thought Ozeki’s book was a long shot compared to others, but wow. She crushed it with that speech. Now I want my daughter to go to Smith (shoot, I want to go to Smith, even though I am well past uni age)! Great video and loved Anna’s involvement again. Glad you had fun at the event.
The book of form and emptiness was my favorite!! I'm so happy!!! Thank you so much for the coverage and what a beautiful shirt 💕 And "fun fact" in spanish the book is called "El gran circulo" (The great circle) not "Gran circulo" (Great circle) xD
i've really enjoyed all your women's prize videos this year - thank you so much for them and sharing this as well!! i didn't love the shortlist and ozeki's book was my least favourite on the list so i'm a bit disappointed by who won but i really did love the process of reading everything and getting involved, and the speech was lovely
What a wonderful video and such a fun experience (as always thanks for the shots from the train) I’m happy for the winner, I really thought it was such an important book on mental illness I wish more people mentioned how hearing voices from mental illness can come across as magical realism in a novel.
Thank you for bringing us along to the party. I did not expect Ruth Ozeki to win but I am happy for her. I am going to pick up The Book of Form and Emptiness again and see if I get more out of it second time around.
@@EricKarlAnderson I've now finished my second read of The Book of Form and Emptiness. I did pick up more in terms of themes and perhaps felt a bit more empathy for certain characters (especially Annabelle) but I still found it overly long and just okay. I'd be interested to read some of her backlist, but Booker season is approaching so it may have to wait a few months.
I think one of my first Booktube videos watched was yours from the Women’s Prize last year. Of course the time frame for the announcement was different, so it’s not been a year, but it seems celebratory nonetheless. Thanks for sharing these amazing opportunities with a larger audience since so few of us will ever get the chance to attend in person. Her speech was gracious and heartfelt and obviously has deep meaning to her, especially as a professor at Smith College.
Entertaining vlog. Cool shirt. I enjoyed the books I read by Ozeki, haven't read this one yet. How lovely is Ozeki, in her winning speech she talked about those who supported her and even a student of hers whose book is being published and promoted in town.
Thanks for sharing the evening. I didn’t expect Ruth’s book to win, although when I told my husband she had he said ‘oh that’s the book you said you were really enjoying’ I have been a fan of Great Circle since receiving it as a Christmas present, and honestly thought it would win. Enjoy your Baileys 😊
Thank you Eric, for a lovely vlog. I live in new Zealand so feel very far away from things like this. London looked amazing and it seemed to be an amazing event. I loved 'Sorrow and Bliss' and was hoping that might win. I got half way thru 'Great Circle' and I have stopped reading it. It just felt like it was 'too much'. Too much of a story in one book. I found it overwhelming, even though I didn't get very far in. I have just bought 'The Island of Missing Trees' to read, and will catch up on the other books as well.
