The event is a best of 3 races with each race beeing 3 rounds (3x250m) long. The cat and mouse game before is due to the rule that the rider, going into 3rd round beneath the red "sprinter-line", can't be overtaken from the inside. This is of course the much more favourable position as its shorter. At the same time you want to start the sprint as late as possible to conserv energy and as first placed need to watch your back if your opponent attacks. Much more counts into this such as slipstream advantage, highground and personal physics. In the second race the starting positions are switched.
