Here's a rule of thumb when dealing with the wilderness: if it is colorful or makes you feel compelled to touch it *do not* touch it. Many weaker prey often have this as a defense against predators.

She was being respectful, so the octopus didn't really bite. But I'm glad that she's now educated when it comes to deadly encounters like that.

The blue ringed octopus only shows those blue rings when highly agitated. She's very very very lucky to be alive.

As an Aussie this entire video made my skin crawl. This girl has no idea how incredibly lucky she is.

I go by a rule: If anything in the wild has bright colors or exotic patterns, 95% of the time its either venomous or poisonous.

Growing up in a somewhat rural area, I've avoided handling creatures which tend to be "uniquely colourful". This video made my skin crawl. At least it's a lesson learnt for her and her friends.

OMG! I just taught my 1st graders about this animal. We read a book called Never Smile at a Monkey which teaches the danger of handling animals that you don't know about. I guess adults should read it too.

I am south australian born and raised. And ever since i can remember, my mum would stress and lecture me about these little guys every time we would go to the beach. Im now 28 and she is still on my case about not "playing in rock pools" 😂

Her kindness towards animals returned the favor to her. If it were some rude people, they would have been dead for possibly handling it with arrogance.

She is so unbelievably lucky. The blue rings only appear when they're threatened as a warning signs that's says back off I'm deadly. The fact that it didn't bite her despite that is a miracle. Growing up a few hundred meters from the beach I've known about these creatures since I was 5 and know if I ever see one to stay clear away from it. Unlike some other deadly ocean animals like the box jelly fish the blue ringed octopus does not have any antivenom, the only way to survive is for someone to perform CPR long enough to keep your heart going and brain supplied with oxygen until the venom passes through the body. It's basically a death sentence.

In all honesty it would be pretty sad being a blue ring octopus. Everyone wants to run away from you and no one wants to be your friend. The poor fellow finally found someone who wanted to be around him and play.

It’s important to research the dangers of the area you’re going to so you can recognize it.

I thought most people knew about the blue ring octopus being dangerous. It's one of the more common animals you'd learn about not handling, like a coral snake, or black widow spiders.

I'm so glad I was a junior marine biologist. Rule 1: bright colors mean poison 🤦🏾 I'm also glad everyone is okay.

This also points out that when you travel to exotic places and you expect to snorkel, dive or just swim, you should do your due diligence and find out what critters to avoid and why. Glad she's ok. Take only photographs, leave only footprints.

Believe it or not. When I was really young, like 3 or 4ish and we just moved to Australia. My mum gave me a shell that she found and put it in my inflatable boat that I was in, and she didn’t realise that there was a blue ringed octopus inside. It came out and it was swimming in the smallest amount of water. I must’ve touched it. She then later realised and asked the locals what it was and they told us that it was a blue ring and it could’ve killed me in minutes.
