Women Veterans Day honors the service and sacrifices of female veterans, acknowledging their courage in a predominantly male field.During the Revolutionary War, women served as "housekeepers of war," supporting their husbands in battle by cooking, cleaning, and tending to the wounded. In the Civil War, around 400 women disguised themselves as men to serve on both the Confederate and Union sides. World War I saw 35,000 women serve in various non-combat roles such as clerks and radio operators, marking the first time women could officially enlist in the military. In World War II, approximately 350,000 women served as nurses, cryptologists, and in military intelligence, with the Women's Air Force Service Pilots (WASPs) flying 60 million miles in support missions. During the Korean War, 120,000 women served, many in the medical field. The Vietnam War had 10,000 women, mostly as nurses. During Desert Storm, 37,000 women served in roles such as helicopter pilots and engineers. From 2003 to 2011, during Operation Iraqi Freedom, 3,000 women served in Iraq and Afghanistan, playing crucial roles in intelligence gathering among local populations.
