There's too much of these mediocre mystery/thriller books these days, and 9/10 of them are called "Something Girl" or "The Woman something something." Ever since Gillian Flynn's "Gone Girl" came out, everyone has been trying to imitate it or put a twist on it. It's getting harder for me to pick a book to read from that genre because they're all so derivative and unimaginative.

Mine is Sarah J Maas. I tried, I really did, but I only got until the first half of Heir of Fire when I gave up completely on that series. I also finished A Court of Thorns and Roses, and surprise surprise, didn't like it. I decided, ONCE AND FOR ALL, to try to read Crescent City and if I didn't like it, I wouldn't continue with any more of her works. Yeah, I just feel like she writes the same characters again and again: hot guy with a lot of snark and sarcasm and pointy ears and bAdAsS female protag who is perfect and can do no wrong and is (most of the time) horny for the pointy-eared guy

YAS! Thank you for saying it. I kept thinking there was something wrong with me, cause what seemed like the whole world is in love with her books. I started Throne of Glass, cringed throughout and finally gave up at Heir of Fire. Her writing style itself isn't that appealing to me, plus the characters are one-dimensional and annoying. This is just my opinion, guys, don't @ me. I'm happy someone else feels the same way tho

My thoughts exactly!! I tried reading the throne of glass series, tried reading a court of thorns and roses, I even tried reading the book she wrote about freaking catwoman of all people, and I just could NOT get through any of them! I have a friend who loves the throne of glass series and keeps telling me to keep reading but like I just really don't want to. Her writing style is just meh imo, and her characters and plot are one dimensional and so very unoriginal. Also heard a lot about her writing abusive relationships and sex scenes in her book aimed at teens and like,,,, I'm not about that life sis. Like if you like her books that's fine but I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't :')

So I'm a big Neil Gaiman fan; however, if you start reading a book by him and aren't into it, I'd say just dnf and then skip him, it won't get better for you. Lol. Like I said, I enjoy his writing, but there is a sort of "mysticism" surrounding it. This perpetuates people's belief that if they didn't like it, it's because they couldn't "understand" it or that they just didn't get it. Add to that a fan base that borders on being a cult, and then people feel scared to admit they didn't like him. Different people like different writing styles, and I like his, but that doesn't make me right or someone else wrong.

So I'm a gaiman fan. But I feel his books dont have consistent writing voices. Not saying that as a bad thing, but I find his books so different. Like neverwhere was so different to american gods was so different to good omens. Good omens wasn't my fav. I felt the writing to be too poetic. Yet I can still admire it for what it is. It reminds me quite a bit of hitchhiker's. American gods is one of my favs but probably because I felt it read so easy.

I really enjoyed Carry On even though it wasn't the best book I've ever read. I normally don't read ya books but this one had some *representation* and well...wizards. I did like the similarities to Harry Potter as well but I can see how it could really be a hit or miss thing and passed off as "lazy writing" the cool thing about Carry On to me is that since it really does stand on it's own, with some strong Harry Potter inspired themes, every book will be more to itself and it will give all the other characters room to grow into more genuine characters depending on what Rowell decides to do. I haven't read any of her other books either but I think she has some potential for her future books, despite what I've heard about her current ones.

His writing style is pretty consistent throughout all of his books I've read, so if you've tried two and haven't liked them I really don't think you'll like any of his others. I enjoy his books BECAUSE of his writing style (it just immediately clicked with me, makes me feel at home, and is generally a treat for me to read), but I really think thats the main thing that makes his books special, and if it didn't click with you from the beginning I can safely say none of his books will be fun for you to read. I think it would be a good idea to do a "try a chapter" of the ones you already own! I would argue in favor of Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. I think people are thrown off, because it's like Harry Potter, but you are dumped into the story in book 7. So many of the epic battles have already been fought, and our main character already has his reputation. I think maybe that bugs people, but I found it interesting to try to piece together what came before.

To be fair to Neil Gaiman, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is quite different from what he usually writes, and Good Omens was co-authored, so they're not very representative of his work. Neverwhere is much more typical. If you want to give him one last chance, I'd try one of his short horror stories (I recommend Snow, Glass, Apples) or his Sleeping Beauty retelling, The Sleeper and the Spindle. If you hate them, at least they're short, but I think you might like those!

That story would have triggered me big time into a depressed state. In my 40 yr career it’s happened twice. For me, the vast majority of authors that fall into the "Never Again" category are all YA authors. I'm in my mid-30s now and I just can't relate to the struggle of teenagers anymore lol. So mine is: Sarah J Maas Cassandra Clare Libba Bray Susan Dennard (I liked Truthwitch, but am struggling to get into the rest of the series) Marissa Meyer Not YA: Josh Malerman - I just am not into his writing and feel that it's overhyped

I think my list is: - J K Rowling (even if she wasn't a sentient trash bag, her writing is just so bland and underdeveloped) - Cassandra Claire (if she counts; I've never really liked anything she's done outside of that LotR fic, and that was likely just because I read it as a child) - Elan Mastai (I know he's only written one book so there's a chance he might improve, but my complete and utter disappointment over a concept that could have been so interesting being instead used to make every single underwritten woman, including his /sister/ fall in love with the protagonist tells me I won't read it regardless) - Gillian Flynn (I have no idea why, because her writing is fine and the plots are all the sort of thing I'd usually throw myself headfirst into, but something in her work just doesn't click for me) - Rainbow Rowell (I really did try, and Carry On was sort of blah, but acceptable enough to give her another shot. However, Fangirl annoyed me to no end; the only thing that got me to finish was my determination not to have any DNFs on my list that year)

I tried American Gods and had to leave it unfinished. The concept was cool and I'm sure there's a lot of good to it, but I found the main character to be insufferably boring. He's a passive character exaggerated to the highest degree. Never takes much of an action, doesn't care about anything, stuff happens around him and he lets himself be carried away. And yes, there's a reason: He's undergoing a depression shock. I get the idea. Doesn't change the fact that following him along bored me to tears. Still, it's the only book of his I actually tried reading, so I haven't really closed my doors to him yet. His Sandman visual novels are pretty good.
