I colorized, restored and created a sound design for this video of Wonderful Trip to California 1940s, we can clearly see what is happening in broad daylight,
Video Restoration Process:
✔ FPS boosted to 60 frames per second
✔ Image resolution boosted up to HD
✔ Improved video sharpness and brightness
✔ Colorized only for the ambiance (not historically accurate)
✔added sound only for the ambiance
✔restoration:(stabilisation,denoise,cleand,deblur)
Please, be aware that colorization colors are not real and fake, colorization was made only for the ambiance and do not represent real historical data.

When I see these moments of the past, like the young woman contemplating the morning happily, there I reflect on how short life is, you see this girl at that moment and with her whole life to live at that moment, and to this day 2022 she has probably already ceased to exist, several years ago, and you reflect that life is just a breath in time.

Pretty sure these were shot as plates for movies. They would project them on screens behind actors in cars for driving scenes. You can even see the cop holding traffic at the very end of the last shot.

At 6:40 - Burbank: Hollywood Way & Verdugo Ave looking east. The fire break in the Verdugo Hills is visible in Google Street today. 6:56 - The house at the northeast corner of Verdugo Ave & Maple St is extant on Google Street. 7:14 - " " northwest " " " " " " .

I figured out that clips 2 and 3 are in downtown Ontario, California, both in the middle of the intersection of Euclid Avenue and East B Street, at these coordinates: 34.064605, -117.651022. It was the pepper trees in the median that pointed me in the right direction. In clip 3, the only remaining building is the one on the far right (well, still remaining on Google Street View). The architectural details are still original, unlike the buildings in clip 2, which are recognizable, but quite altered. These clips colorized and enhanced the way you have done them is like nothing I've seen before. Excellent job and thank you.

I'll bet it was unlikely that anyone on the film crew thought that this film and many others like it would be a source of enjoyment by viewers many decades later. I am a native Californian and videos like these are especially endearing to me, at the age of 68 seeing life before I was born like a video made only yesterday is mesmerizing. My wife and I love this channel.

yes, this was the style for a while. but by 1960 these old cars just vanished! along w/ the odd hair and shoes the women wore. fox stole wraps and tiny hats w/ netting, yet seen among the 'older' set, were soon gone as well. oh, how splendid to welcome in the new era of youthful playfulness and modernity w/ all of its freshness and easy elegance! such a change for the better! remember the days? good health and innocent fun! lovely time!

I think it's very likely that they could have thought of people looking at this in the future. It does have a look to it, as if they are intentionally documenting the way it looks, for future reference. What they probably could not imagine is how we are looking at it. The devices we are using, and the improvement in quality.

This is amazing! I so appreciate your videos. One correction. I do believe the first 1:40 is on the Warner Bros. backlot. That's also why you see signs like Midwest Investment Co. Again, it doesn't deter from the video, but just thought I'd mention it.

The mid-part looks like Balboa Peninsula, OC, which hasn’t changed all that much in 70 or so years. With color added the video looks like it could have been filmed yesterday. Really enjoying it!

Adding to this - the FIRST PART - is I’m certain - the old UNIVERSAL BACK LOT - the circular drive - THE OTHER PART (not shown here) - is prominently featured in the opening of ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS -. The middle part - I’m also 99% certain - is the corner of LANKERSHIM and MAGNOLIA - part of the building - shown in this locked off shot - has been taken down - and matches - the PIZZA RESTAURANT with now outdoor patio - on the NW corner. The last part - 100% begins at HOLLYWOOD WAY but on VERDUGO/CAMARILLO - traveling WEST - on the LEFT SIDE (when you see near accident with the truck) - that is OLD WARNER RANCH in it’s entirety - and the “accident” happens at PASS and CAMARILLO. This is wonderful.

@@richardhenry968 good info. I always try and find these locations, which is hard unless you can harvest some local street sign or business name which is usually long gone. LA street lamps are at least one clue !. A certain turn in a road, an incline, or a hill in the distance.

One dropped this week - and I was like - this has to be the road up to the Greek - and armed with 3D Apple Maps - was able to confirm it. It’s like a very pleasure game. Last week - I mapped out half of east Berlin from hours of DDR and wall footage between 45 and 85 - it was challenging but rewarding when I figured stuff out.

I saw the same thing. I also saw a 1950s Schwinn Cruiser Deluxe bicycle, so this can't be California 1940s. EDIT: I was wrong. Just learned the Schwinn Cruiser Deluxe bicycle is pre-war, late 1930s.

Late 40's or very early 50's. Prewar cars quit being made in 41, postwar started up with 46 models. Saw a possibly 50 chevy, although 49's looked about the same. Great video, I remember that world well. Born in 46 in San Fernando, Ca.

Right. Production actually stopped in January '42. So you could technically own a '42 model but production didn't resume until October of 45, so yes a new purchase would be a 46.

With the hill in the background and the way that people are walking around, the beginning of the video looks like Universal Studios. In an uncut clip, it oddly and suddenly goes from people in the country shucking hay to nicely dressed people shopping in downtown Main Street. I agree with the other comments and that this may have been some type of driver training film.

At 0:34 you can see a metal beam behind the facade of the "main street" buildings. At 0:50 you can see a 1928-'29 Ford Model A Hot Rod blast by with no fenders and side pipes. It mist likely had the original four banger motor with those pipes. So cool! Definitely a set in the opening footage....I love it!!!

American car business model was based on short lifespan and frequent cosmetic styling changes and hyped up advertising for the "new" models each year. They wanted people to get a new car every couple of years. Much like mobile phones today.

Looks like a couple of different locations, the large Valley Oaks and Eucalyptus, and Olive trees are common throughout Central, Coastal, and Southern California. The staged near misses were a little bit of “creative” production value!

Beautiful restoration work! The last bit of footage looks just like Honolulu Ave in Montrose, CA. There is a bowling alley there just like in the footage. The bowling alley opened in 1936 so it could very well be footage of Montrose at that time. The street lamps look the same as well.

Yeah, there were about three or four incidents involving some pretty crazy manoeuvers. The driver of the camera car was driving like a drunk driver. The footage in these videos is incredible; it's almost like being there.

Most of this video appears to be a stunt driving. Notice the traffic cop holding traffic. I did this for years (up to last year) when the film crews needed to have a safe street for filming. Lots of this goes on in the city of Los Angeles. But this officer is not wearing an police uniform and might possibly a Sheriff Deputy.

Awesome video. The video was filmed in 1949 and the early 1950's. My reason for suggesting the years is because, I saw two 1949 or 1950 Ford Customs AKA Shoebox; time stamp 2:08. It was the first modern car. I saw a couple of other early 1950's Chevrolets.

That's all I see, youd be in heaven to pass a well correctly painted 1930's and 1940's automobile that has correct bias ply Firestones/rims let alone just being raised to the proper height and poise. Next to impossible today.

I was born in 1950, and by the time I was a young adult these cars were considered old pieces of junk, basically worthless. I guess that's why they seem ugly and lumpy to me. I did look up the original colors they came in, most were muted shades of gray, blue and green, also red and yellow.

A similar video was posted where there was speculation that this was Hollywood getting stock footage. I think this is correct. First, the film is top of the line, second, nobody would have filmed a near miss accident.

The first one and a half minutes reminded me of the 1962 film "To Kill a Mockingbird" with Gregory Peck athough that was black and white. The driver seemed a bit distracted here towards the end! Keep up the great work NASS!

1:41-4:50 Were filmed on Euclid Ave at B St. in Ontario, California looking north and northwest.

0:07 - 1:40 - backlot of universal studios - we begin on the rural sets (not they aren’t real buildings when you look up) and then turn LEFT onto the NORTHERN (STRAIGHT) portion of CIRCLE DRIVE. This is very interesting because it’s the least covered section of CIRCLE DRIVE - normally you see the round section - like in the beginning of ALL THE HEAVEN ALLOWS. 3:32 - 4:48 - I believe this is the NW corner of LANKERSHIM and MAGNOLIA - where PITFIRE PIZZA now resides. It matches fairly well. I mean to look up in an old directory if there was a WOOLWORTHS at this location too. That would clarify. 6:25 - FACING SOUTH on OCEANVIEW in Montrose - turning RT (west) onto HONOLULU - note the MONTROSE BOWLING building on the left - it’s still there - and looks exactly the same 6:41 - We are facing EAST - but driving WEST - this is the corner of HOLLYWOOD WAY and VERDUGO/CAMARILLO. - the FOUNTAIN GRILL is now the 76 gas station - the gas station on the left of frame is now the 7-11. NOTE THE POWER LINES on WHITNALL - where the proposed WHITNALL HIGHWAY was supposed to be located. We travel west - and the “SWERVE” happens at PASS. on the south side of the screen (or right side in this first pass) is the FULL WARNER RANCH - the final structures you see before the swerve are still there. But the first ones are part of the shopping plaza now. Not sure about the others - but these I know for sure or feel very confident about about (LANKERSHIM)

Holy Buckets, NASS, the first bit of film, all close up & personal in the small town, is unbelievable! You could feel the CA sun beating down on you. My grandma would have been 20 something. I have many photos of her wearing the clothes or standing by the cars. It's a nice window into what her life was like.

The near accidents at 6:57 and 7:21 are actually the same scene. The camera car had cameras in the back and front. The truck and the park cars are a perfect match.

There's Obviously MORE Than Just One Film in this group. The newest cars that I could spot were the back ends and side of Shoebox Ford's, being either 1949 or 50. Notice the Unlucky guy on the street, Trying to PUSH His 1930's car along, that must have Run Out Of Gas or Konked Out while he was driving along. The Last Film had a Really Daring, (Or Extremely Foolish), Camera Man, Causing Other traffic to Panic Stop or Swerve on the road to probably get out of the way. And the NEAR-Miss HEAD-ON Collision At The End was Truly A DARING STUNT To Pull Off Indeed. HEY NASS; How are you Going To Top This One? With an Old Seam Locomotive Explosion? Keep up The TERRIFIC JOB You're Doing. They are IMMENSILY APPRECIATED. FIVE STARS For You.

The opening scene, even if was a little too perfect in its concentration of rural folk, the environment was authentic. Back in the early fifties, Grandma & Grandpa had a water pump in the yard and one by the kitchen sink; and an outhouse (with fancy wallpaper). I and my brother spent a week there for two summers in a row. Ahhh! ... Those halcyon days.

I think the first 1:40 may be a movie set (Universal Studios?). There is a "Midwest Investment Co." in that townscape. Plus all of a sudden there seemed to be numerous townspeople strolling about at around 0:58. Not to mention that there seem to be few license plates on the cars.

I agree with your comment. This whole video is a bit different than the others that have been posted by NASS. As you say, the first 1:40 is obviously staged. Also, I find it hard to believe that the near accident towards the end was not also staged, particularly since there were police on the scene. But all of these videos are fascinating, no question about it.

The driver almost had a head on collision veering into the opposite direction lane. Great video. No cell phones, no crowded traffic & plenty of parking. Life was simple & quiet. Too bad they've all passed on.

And I thought drivers were crazy today. The last 2 minutes of this video showed at least 2 missed but close call collisions with trucks, 2 flipped or out of control cars narrowly missing each other and a purposeful attempt at head-on collision, wow.

It's 35mm filmstock. I think it was made for back-screen shots by the movie studios. That might account for the erratic driving. Second unit choreography.

@@suppylarue220 I don't know with 100% certainty but 8mm and 16mm are way too grainy. This video is sharp. There's practically no loss of detail. If the studio used these movies for background rear projection scenes (2nd unit production) they would use the best possible. Also 35mm was industry standard. Maybe someone else has better knowledge of this aspect of movie making.

Starting at 6:42 you have the Burbank Ca hills ( The San Fernando Valley) in the background. Most of these films were shot close by because of the studios being so close to the area. Enjoy!

excellent time travel!!! I think the year is maybe 1948 or 49 because if that 1949 nash ambassadore passed away at that square. And the driver was so lucky !!! He scaped from two nearmiss crashes and the police officer didn't see him!!! Nice film. Thank you so much!!!!

To which I would add : there was an actress named Elena Verdugo in the 60’s & 70’s. She had any number of acting parts but what she was best remembered for was the medical assistant, Consuelo, on Marcus Welby, MD in the early 70’s. Her family were among the early families to settle that area - hence Verdugo Hills.

Clearly, you don't live in southern California. The people in the video stepped right into the crosswalk, confident the cars coming would stop for them. Today, even with a green light, a pedestrian better beware, mad men indeed, doing 90!

I just saw a 1949 Nash. Most of the cars are 30s and 40s, but have not seen too many 50s models, so this could possibly be 1950 or 51. Just an observation.

The Burbank part seems to start at about the 6:41 point. (Assuming that the first part wasn't shot on Warner's backlot.) From comments elsewhere: "The last part - 100% begins at HOLLYWOOD WAY but on VERDUGO/CAMARILLO - traveling WEST - on the LEFT SIDE (when you see near accident with the truck) - that is OLD WARNER RANCH in its entirety - and the “accident” happens at PASS and CAMARILLO."

loved the video, saw a couple of 1939 Ford Delux, my first eight years of car riding were in this model, in New Zealand, my brothers when they got older also collected another two, that was in the late sixties. great video and an amazing insight to the times. Obviously traffic lights were not in the suburbs. Great work.

This looks like very early 50s. I saw a couple of 51 chevys and Studebakers. The transition of body styles was starting to evolve in 51 as well as mechanical reliability.

Yep. This was the era of “blown” tires, retreads, and of course rearends that required rebuilding. I remember my father stopping to fix a flat, driving the blown tire to a service station and patching the tube, and plugging the rubber tire, mounting and balancing it-himself! Radiators that would boil over, and on and on…

These are all "test films" for proposal to make a movie like a story Book scene 1,2,3 and so on, especially the last one where camera car goes to left of the on coming car and than there's a Cop controlling the traffic.

I'm don't think that the first few minutes of this reel is this footage of an actual street. It looks like b-role created for background for films or green screen back shots to use when actors are in a car. First few mins look like everyone was placed and poised to act casual. It also looks like it's on a Hollywood backlot. The rest of the footage is actual LA streets. I love it. Thank you!
