Okay, cruel, because the wonder is that anyone has a hit, when it meant something. By the way, Europa, Windpower, and Science were top 50. Remarkable tribute to his dad.
Excellent ! I certainly remember Thomas Dolby from my early 80's school days , his records were always original. The parody was brilliant and a great interview. Enjoyed that ,thanks David 👍
Thomas Dolby's Blinded Me With Science was my bff and mine favorite song from waaay back. It stood out from the regular poppy stuff on the radio. His son's song was great! Lol !
This was a real treat. Thank you Harper, David and Thomas. So much of dad in the attitude, the humour and the technical creativity, I think. And ioved the singing too!
I love this and I grew up listening to Thomas Dolby and used to listen to that Europa and the Pirate Twins music video every day after school! What a fantastic video!
This is awesome! Dolby's stuff is great and till this day i had no idea he even had kids. Yeah this song is super catchy :D Alrighty i'm convinced. This works and turned out just amazing!!! Thank you for sharing this with us!! Harper, this was a great tribute. :) That was absolutely lovely!
Such a lovely family, you can really hear it when they both speak in the two interviews I have seen now, so thoughtful and intelligent. Your love of humanity is so evident and uplifting David. Thomas Dolby rocks!!!
I had no idea who Dolby is, but I still enjoyed the video - Harper did a great job! I ended up watching a live performance of “She Blinded Me with Science”, which I did recognize once I heard it 😀 That line also happens to be in the intro of one of my favorite podcasts, The Mad FIentist.
A note for Harper Hi Harper! I just have a few things to say. First, never count yourself out because you believe you can't measure up to someone else. I made that mistake. But, it's not about measuring up, because it's a journey, and, it should be about fun and learning. Nike once said, "Just do it!" I think Nike was very wise. Secondly, though I knew who your father was back in the 80's, I wasn't a fan of his, but, that doesn't mean that I didn't listen to his music. In fact, over the last few decades I have listened to his music countless times, and it brings back good memories. Lastly, you might discover a therapeutic effect from continuing to explore music. It's not as difficult as you may think, and you might even discover that people can be more supportive than you may have realized. I'm not sure what your dad may think, but that's just my thoughts, as a father of children roughly your age. And in closing, please tell your father I said Hello, from one Baby Boomer to Another. ✌
Haha. I remember riding my BMX with my girlfriend on the front bars and my friends and one of us had a big boom box with Thomas Dolby blaring out at like midnight in New Zealand which meant pubs had been closed for an hour or so... not that we could get in. Good times.
I understand Thomas is now a Professor. His " Europa & The Pirates Twin " single is amazing. The parody is amazing. His son sounds like him ! Brilliant.
Off topic, but I hope u watched his 'the most unusual and sad story I ever recorded' off of this channel here. If not, I hope u do. You will never not think about it every day. To this day, best video of a real story I ever watched. N as always, infinite blessings to all
InHisHonor InfinityX3 - if you want or like I’ll send you a link to similar stories but if you come to my page...i do Not want to disrespect David’s channel...
👏👏👏👏👏 I was there when MTV was new and Dolby was IT. Watching this brought back memories of old friends and good times. Thank you David and, of course, Harper! This was delightful to experience -- we're not getting a lot of that these days! 😁👍
Thomas Dolby having a collection of periscopes makes perfect sense, "One of Our Submarines" is one of his best works! I love this so much! Long time fan of his music ❤️
Taking me back blinding me with 'new' science, this son so had me a dancing n wailing around like I was a teenager again. 💃 Smiling, he done this video with much love and vast amount of humour. The humbleness that went into of honoring his dad in this fashion was so delightful to us viewers. What a treat of a lifetime for the dad...and for the both of you! 🎯 Do wonder what their next generation will add on on top of this parody. God willing, I will wait n see 💒 n as always, infinite blessings everyone
Harper... Perhaps I'm one of the few subscribers who know of yours father's music (I'm 65). Your video is nostalgic and adorable. Thanks to you and David for sharing it with us ❤️
I believe it was Harper that inadvertently introduced me to one of my favorite musicians (other than TD of course) through a cover of their song that he performed beautifully on piano. The cover was so delightful that I was inspired to check out the musician being covered and the rest is history. As is true with so much on the internet, the original video was deleted and has (from what I know) been lost to time. I miss that version of the song but it's so great to see Harper still carries on his father's musical legacy to this day :)
When we were kids, my friend's dad had a bunch of videos on tape and Hyperactive by Thomas Dolby was one of them. It played a profound influence on us and our absurd sense of humor.
True , I’m one of those who isn’t familiar with Thomas Dolby’s work (alas) but it didn’t prevent me from enjoying every second of Harper’s video !! Absolute delight , bravo 👏!! Interesting, sweet, funny , nice shots, great music ..!!!!))))))) Thanks to son I ll look into his father’s world of music !))))) Thank you, mr Hoffman, for this present 💝
As a Cajun, I appreciate that Thomas Dolby made the only electronic Cajun album ever. Its really good, I used to play it while I drove to Lafayette to see my fathers Aunt and to eat at Prejean's restaurant which was right near her. Thanks Mr. Dolby.
If i was the dad I would be thrilled....so cool to have your son see you that way, fun and respectful. Don't stop Harper, keep the music going....you might have enough DNA to do it!! :-) (and thats coming from a part-time musician). I knew i recognised the tune, got it on the third guess, Europa. Reminded me i need some TD on my itunes. Thanks for the cool video and memories.
Talented guy. It would be a good video résumé for Harper if his day job didn’t work out. 🧨🧨 P.S. I wished my dad collected periscopes. I might inherit them someday‼️
That. Was. Awesome!!! I LOVED Thomas Dolby in my teens and 20's then lost track of his career. His son is so charming. Thank you so much for having him on. I can't stop smiling. 😃
WHAT A TREAT! HARPER IS DEFINITELY A CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK! Sending to everyone I know & shall Tweet tomorrow (due to Graduating TOGETHER w/President Obama here in the U.S. airing tonight👍👍)... THANK YOU - ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON AS WE'RE ALL GOING AROUND THE BEND! 🎼🎶🎹🎤🙏
David Hoffman (Filmmaker) The breadth & depth & scope of your body of work, is simply astounding !! Kudos & good fortune to you, sir...Kindest regards...Cj in Oz
That was very cool!! Really enjoyed it but it reminded me I have to clean the fridge.....it's the song I sing and listen to....... because I always find science projects way in the back.
What a great interview!!! So proud of Thomas Dolby's son. I am sure Thomas and Mom are so proud! Still have fond wonderful memories of MTV and watching his videos doing homework at 4 am before going to school. So miss growing up in the 70s and 80s. Thank you sir, for your informational RU-vid videos.
OH MY GOD I LOVE IT! 👏 He looks just like his dad. SO HANDSOME. I remember when MTV came to Gloucester (New England) and Blinded Me w/ Science played all the time, and we fell in LOVE with Thomas Dolby. And he'd FAR from a one hit wonder. He had 4 hits way back then and more now. Radio Silence was one of our faves. Europa is excellent, and his son HAS THE VOICE. TWO THUMBS WAY UP. 👍👍💕
Thanks for sharing this David. I've been a fan of Thomas' work since the early 80s and finally got to meet him on his book tour a couple of years ago. Once we got past the autographs and geek fanboy questions we had a beer and compared parenting notes as we both share a similar life experience to that which Thomas, Kathleen & Harper have so positively gone through. Probably one of the more surreal but rewarding conversations I've had.
No, people , Mr Dolby didn't go down the dumper - he pioneered polyphonic ringtones ( remember Nokia?) & now leads a new media program at John Hopkins Uni ( has some nice vintage synths in his office). I just saved you valuable research time. Cheers from East Anglia.
Omgoodness I so loved his dads music...Hot Sauce..Bri gs back memories that whole album I loved!! An young Sir it was bloody well good....I was cracking up laughing.... loved it!!! You always surprise me I never know how your posts will hit me .... In the Roll-a-dex in my head of stuff!!! ❤😊🍷❗
Wow, Mr H!! Thanks for that. I didn't know about either of them (that I'm aware of😆) I really enjoyed this video. Also, in this one, there's something about your expression and eyes and your whole face lights up and you're a young boy again, especially without your cap on 😁🤩❣️Whatever you're up to suits you and is shining through. Thank you for everything you do and share with us❣️🤩🌈💖 Greetings from UK
A serious level of Fun !! I enjoyed hearing the love from son to father. I'm dealing with the span of time that has past since She Blinded Me With Science was released , I was 20 something. And I will stop there. Thanks
The Live Aid performance by Bowie is one of the greatest things on film I have ever seen. Every time the band are introduced ( with the backing singers misnamed as Tess Niles points out in her autobiography) it is so exciting to see them launch into the most sublime performance of 'Heroes'. Thomas Dolby's role as musical director for the brief rehearsals in the week before set the scene for an amazing set that has not dated one bit since that glorious July 13th day in 1985. I bought the DVD in 2004 and watch it periodically all this time later.
Was listening to 'Fieldwork' recently, Thomas Dolby's collaboration with Ryuichi Sakamoto (1984). I wish those two had worked together more. Thomas Dolby has always been a favourite of mine - from 'The Golden Age of Wireless' onwards. A great producer, too.
I LOVE THIS! She Blinded me with Science was one of my favorite songs and music videos growing up, and I live within a mile of Johns Hopkins. I remember when the Baltimore Sun published an article about him being a professor there... I always hoped I'd bump into him around town!
Dude! Harper, your video is BRILLIANT. I think you have something here! Your lyrics are great! You could make something for yourself out of this. Use what you have! Your unique position gives you great potential ... of your own! The look with the high-button shirt and vest are a great look. In any case, I we're better for it. As far as your dad's work goes, I STILL turn people on to The Golden Age of Wireless (aka how I noodled my way into this video). Here's to whatever you choose to do in your career.
Dude, ya don't need to hear it again, but you look like your Dad! Totally fresh voice, though! And the parody of one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums! Covid cave dwelling encapsulated 😂!
What a nice video David. Thanks a lot. Ohh how I love Thomas Dolby's music. I still play him very often.... Prefab Sprout as well. How privileged you are to know him personally. Yes, Harper has 50%of his great father. Probably more😉
Yes, I know of Thomas Dolby. I quite enjoy a lot of music featuring synthesizers, including quite a few of his contemporaries, especially ones he commented on directly in interviews, such as Depeche Mode and Howard Jones. Granted, I haven't watched Europa and the Pirate Twins, but a few quick comparisons- yes, it's an excellent parody from what I can see. I see also that he's featured this video at his own channel. Thanks, good sir! You are blessed to have a very good friend who is a talented artist. It's a joy that I can speak to some from my own experiences.
Chip off the ole cpu. Liked the song a lot. The son has a lot of charisma and could be a star. I don’t know Thomas Dolby’s music beyond “She Blinded Me With Science” but that song and video are brilliant. Perfect. Rich with creative ideas in a medium of which I’m not a fan, so that transcendence says a lot about the quality of the song. Don’t keep your day job unless you’re happy. Get into music and be happily poor. Best to you and yours.
That was one of my favorite songs by him and he looks just like him!!! At first, I thought I was gonna take offense but after seeing it I thought is was funny!!!!! Next, do blinded me with science!!!!! Hahahaha!!!!
