Tattoos mean different things to different people around the world. For some they're nothing more than a fashion statement, while others get them for cultural reasons, like the Māori for instance. Many get them as a memento of a time, place, or person. But some people choose to get a tattoo for an entirely different reason, such as to cover up a scar for example.

My scars are completely numb the skin all around where my ankles we operated on have nerve damage so I actually wouldn’t feel anything but I guess that depends on what the scars are from like self harm scars aren’t typically deep enough to cause that kind of nerve damage where as I had all my muscle and fat cut away and plates and screws all drilled into my bones . I have 5 more months if feeling hasn’t returned by then it’s not going to this is probably the only chance I will have to get a tattoo as well because I have a nerve disorder so even lightly brushing against a wall or turning over in bed too fast hurts the majority of my skin except for my ankle where those incisions are .

Having something done on a scar hurts no more than on clear skin, unless the scar is somewhat new. Besides that, the only pain is hypothetical. It's all in your head, I suppose. It may make you a bit queasy, and quite uncomfortable depending on why the scar is there, and if you get physical flashbacks or not. But apart from that, it's no better, nor worse. :) ♡

Did you know that some scars actually have no feeling to them. Last spring I got a scar on my right thigh and it doesn’t have feeling. I don’t believe that scars would hurt anymore than getting a tattoo on skin that doesn’t have scars, I mean I don’t think that getting a scar can cause your nerves to be even more sensitive.

I would not want to get my self-harm scars covered. I need them as a reminder to myself that I had been through the hardest parts of life and made it out of that when I thought suicide was the only option. And having these scars will remind me I can get through whatever lies ahead. And if someone can't accept my scars then I can't accept them, because my scars are beautiful to me.

You can get still get tattoos. I know alot of people that have keloid prone skin that have tattoos. You just have to get one that is lightly done

I don’t completely agree, tattoos aren’t there to cover it up, In this video atleast. I think that people actually get reminded a lot more with the tattoo. And the ideas that they had with these tattoos are creative.

My friends have scars one of them has a scar running down her leg from her thigh to her shin. She no longer has a bone, but instead has a titanium rod. 3-4 years ago she had cancer. She won the battle and lives with this scar. She hates it, but I love it. She limps along with it. I think that the scar makes her who she is. It makes her a survivor. My other friend got into a jet ski accident, she now has a scar on her face. She got hit and was bleeding terribly, she broke her jaw, but is better now. Both of my friends hate their scars, but I love them.

Same. The world today has ideology to cover up any imperfection like scars when really a person's scars show the world how strong they are and how much they've endured and made it through. I love my scars and would never think about covering them up with tattoos.

Shakira Ryan there is meaning behind that zipper tattoo as well. The scar is from having brain surgery for Chiari Malformation. We use the term zipperhead often for ourselves since many will need the surgery a few times. So the zipper at the base of the scar has become a sign of awareness and pride in our battle againest chiari, without covering our winning battle scar. Ill be getting my zipper head tattoo in november for my scar 😄

I'd prefer a prohibited sign so if it even entered my head I'd stop. Or may be a heart shape outline incorporating the scar in border and the names of people who love me. If I got fingers crossed...knowing me its not definite enoygh....I'd cut the fingers off my tattoo....self harming on 2levels

I have 24 surgery scars all over my legs plus 1 on my hand and lower back I've always liked the idea of getting a tattoo done to cover them up as a sort of empowerment. But the problem I've run into is my low tolerance for pain and my startle response that comes with having cerebral palsy. I'm turning 18 in 9 months...

Not all scars can safely be tattooed. Especially if the skin texture is rather rough the scar might not be safely coverable. Scarred skin might also react radically differently to getting tattooed than normal skin. The tattoo is basically a new injury and some scarred skin might be unable to heal from it like normal skin would. Please make sure you ask a serious, high quality tattoo artist about your tattoo wishes. Consult a dermatologist when in doubt. Being cheap and careless about this might just get you an even uglier scar in the end, or worst case some never healing wound.

what you said about attention. sometimes its coz they want someone to care and aknowledge there's a problem. sometimes its to show people what people gave don't to them. I used to self harm. I usually only told 2 people but sometimes I'd roll my sleeves down in class hoping someone would notice and say something. I felt alone and I was desperate for someone to Care. however not all people who show people are like this. some people are really horrible about it and only do it because it makes then look 'edgy' or 'cool'

My childhood best friend got into an accident when she was 5 and her left thigh got injured she had to get stitches...her scar is so big that it cover like more than half of her thigh..when i first saw it i literally cried because my friend had to go through that pain...she was actually really sad about the scar but now she is 16 she says it's fine to have a scar atleast i survived that day..my best friend is stronger than anyone i know❤

I self harmed when I was 13-14 and later on recovered and never self harmed again. I’m 17 now and don’t pity or feel sorry for people who self harm and just try to understand us with time and patience and not with anger and not frustration because family and friends just get driven away and just check in on us now and then but not constantly because we want to feel normal and relaxed to those who have and will recover because. If I have recovered and battled through it and still are battling through it so can you and you have all your life ahead of you and never give up. Love, resilience and patience💕❤️👍

I have two big scars on my leg after some surgeries because a car hit me and I almost died with my baby on my arms and i was actually thinking of covering them with a tattoo, to help me forget about it. But unfortunately I feel pain there every day so my plan will not work 😢😩

I have 127 scars on my body I don't want anyone tattooed or covered scars are reminders that you have been through a lot and things will always get better even if the mark is forever the pain won't be they show how strong you are to come back from such pain and sadness I have been through a lot so I know things with all was get better so leave that scars don't tattoo it or cover it it shows how brave you are things will always get better

I’ve got a lot of self harm scars that I’m ashamed and embarrassed about. I love that they show how far I’ve come but they also remind me of how much pain I was in and I’ve been looking for ideas because I’m getting a sleeve to cover up the ones on my arm and I’m copying that hedgehog for the ones on my thigh for my 18th (a few months away) and seeing this video gave me lots of inspiration and it was nice that it wasn’t taboo because it was self harm, so thank you!

Some people may feel insecure about showing the whole world what theyve done to themselves and therefore cover up . But others may want a tattoo to remind them of what made them want to recover and to oull through . Maybe a symbol or character representing someone or something . That , and it may be to start a conversation . People may feel uncomfortable asking why they harmed themselves . It's more casual to ask why they got a tatto and start a conversation off of that .

as a doctor of many years standing i would never recoment tattooing a scar. scar tissue is made of collagen and behaves in a different manner to skin and can reopen and become infected it is also the site of an injury

richcampoverde I was just thinking that it's a scar so wouldn't it just open up wasn't sure til I read ur comment plus AV lots of scars and there white the skin of the scar really thin don't think you should really pierce it with a tattoo gun wouldn't be good am no doctor you'd be cutting the scar open again years ago I got a tattoo on my forearm my right side that's because I have scars on the left even 6 years ago I knew that you shouldn't really tatto over scars I could of to cover them up but I don't know I just knew it was a bad idea even tho I would love to get them covered deep down but them remind of how far AV came since I was 13-17 years old am 25 now.

As a tattoo artist, I can tell you that you can safely cover a scar with a tattoo. But that requires some stricts elements. The scar must be a least 5 years old (the skin must have usually fully recover at the time) and you must have seen a doctor. Only he can tell if the skin is healthy enough to apply a tattoo on it. So I would highly suggest everyone who wants to get tattooed on a scar to go to a dermatologist first. :) Plus don't forget a needle for tattoo only go about 1 to 4 milimeters deep in the skin. So... Yeah. Tattoing scars is quite difficult though so always be careful with your skin n' body 👌

I read a book about an artist covering scars pro bono. It's great to now be able to visualize it. It takes all kinds to help someone heal, not just doctors. For those being kind and helping others(paid or not) thank you. Your appreciated more than you know!

If you're too young for a tattoo,you're too young for self harm. Trust me,my sister used to cut her wrists all the time, and one time she told me that if she could take anything back, it'd be that. Please don't self harm, because eventually things will get better. There is always a positive outcome for any situation, you just need to be strong and find the right path. If you find that path, I can promise you will lead a happy and joyous life. ♡

Cause when she was 16 her and her brother my uncle went Camping mi uncle got drunk and locked da tent my mother was a sleep in and den set it on fire she only survived because my uncles girlfriend was dare alwell and threw lots of water over the tent and unlocked it so she could get out

Look better?? So the scars made them less then they are now? These scars show emotion and rough times and people want to make it positive by having artistic notes and drawings on them or covered it to feel more comfortable and confident but they are not any better they were allways better
