“Wonderful World” is a 1959 color travelogue produced by Jam Handy for Coca-Cola and narrated by Ken Nordine. The broad documentary surveying global cultures, lifestyles, emphasizing common human activities. The opening minutes takes viewers to various sites across the United States, including a baseball game, New England churches, and the ivy-covered halls of Harvard University, before visits to the Canadian Parliament, Britain’s Parliament, and friendly British pubs. Mark 04:10 introduces a Shakespearean performance before moving on to the cloistered quiet of Oxford University, “which symbolizes the universal idea of the oneness of mankind,” says the narrator at mark 04:36. People also can be united through sports such as horse racing in England (as noted at mark 04:47) a leisurely ride on the Seine past Notre Dame, or people watching on the Champs-Elysées near the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. We the Louvre and participants in the Tour de France as the narrator notes at mark 07:14 that “in Europe, they live in easy harmony between the old and the new.” Belgium, the Netherlands, and Sweden are all shown as scenes of the old coexisting with the new are shown. A German soccer match is juxtaposed with ancient castles in Heidelberg at mark 09:43. Brief scenes from Munich and Vienna follow as strains of Johann Strauss’ “Blue Danube Waltz” plays at mark 11:08.
We travel down the canals of Venice, visit the artwork in Florence, and pay homage to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome at mark 13:45. There are bulls in Spain and caravans in the desert wastelands of the Middle East before visiting the Sphinx and pyramids at mark 19:25. The striking contrasts of the African continent begin at mark 20:25, as the viewer sees powerful waterfalls and and barren plains. This is followed by the Taj Mahal in India at mark 22:40 and temples in Bangkok at mark 24:24. We see life in China, Japan, and Hawaii, as well as in the Andes of South America and the splendor of Rio de Janeiro at mark 33:32. From Mexico City at mark 36:06 to San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge at mark 37:23, the narrator continues to explain how each land opens its proverbial arms to visitors - especially Disneyland (shown at mark 38:00). From Chicago to St. Louis, the narrator reminds us that “wherever we go, home is undoubtedly the best of all.”
Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. WHO paid for this film? ;)

@@fromthesidelines It was sponsored and paid by Coca Cola. Likewise Pepsi did a sports film called The World Next Door in 1965 and the only drink in that film is Pepsi!

It’s very subtle. A similar film made today would have obnoxious product placement. That’s a fact.

@@mitchdakelman4470 So we managed to sell coke to the Kremlin, but now we have Communists in Congress? Who's responsible for that?
@mitchdakelman4470
@mitchdakelman4470 3 года назад
@@jaminova_1969 Hi Jami, a number of friends blame me personally of who and what happens in Congress. Personally, don't like talking about politics, and maybe if you can ID the individual who is a Communist, I may have an answer. I tell my friends...if you can do better, you should run for political office. I'll talk to you about the film itself, Wonderful World, but not the politics behind the filming of it in 1959 -- none of these films made in the 1950s travel to communist countries including the Walt Disney film The Danube, that was made around the time of Wonderful World...also in these promo films, you'll never see the bad parts of a city, no poverty, no garbage on the streets, etc. we all live in a shang-ri-la, a so called ideal society in Hilton's novel Lost Horizon, according to these films of the 1950s.

I checked the part on Sweden, hoping to see a view of the traffic. I've heard they drove on the "wrong" side of the road back then, and it would have been interesting to see it. But anyway, was this a series or is this video the whole thing? Did someone travel in dozens of countries, and a minute or less of material from each country ended up in the program? That'd seem pretty wasteful...

We changed on 3 Sept 1967. However, cars have always had the steering wheel on the left. Here is a "re-enactment" on the 50th anniversary in 2017: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TC0azFh03cw.html (most - but not all - cars pre-1967 models). More clips here: ru-vid.com?search_query=h%C3%B6gertrafikoml%C3%A4ggningen+1967 The switch-over took place at 5 am Sunday morning and only taxis and buses were allowed on the road at that moment.

This was not part of a series. Actually, this print comes from my own collection. There is a booklet that came with the film detailing the number of countries that were visited to make the film, the many language barriers, and there were several crews that traveled on behalf of the sponsoring firm, Coca-Cola to make the film. Likewise, Pepsi did a similar film on sports around the world, and in that film, the only beverage that is consumed is Pepsi, and I have a travel film to Alaska sponsored by Miller Brewing, and the only beverage consumed in that film is Miller beer, but the cast is that film is all adults.
