The tale of an early season thru-hike of the Wonderland Trail, with much snow travel and river fording. It's called An Unexpected Adventure because when we originally got our permits for a July 8th start, we knew there would be at least some snow, but we were planning on a relaxed, easy going trip. Instead, Washington kept getting snow even into June and we were faced with about 60% snow coverage and several bridges out. I had not gotten in any good postholing since the CDT in 2019, so we decided to give it a whirl. The result was an exciting (and unexpected) adventure!
The Wonderland Trail is a 93 mile loop around Mount Rainier with consistently excellent views and normally easy travel, traits which make it very popular. So it was truly special to experience solitude on such a well known and often crowded trail.

We did this in mid July 2022... We saw 5 groups of other hikers the whole thru hike. It was eerily desolate for such a popular hike. Some days we didn't see a single person. Raging rivers, steep snow slopes (Spray Park), tons of bears, routefinding, no caches or refuel stops, and finished in 6 days. It was an adventure and highlight of my time in the PNW. Thanks for this video :)

Wow, you guys did great. At the time you were hiking the Wonderland I was checking the trail reports and watching if anyone had successfully made it around. I started out several weeks later going CCW. The snow was still pretty deep and melting fast up on Panhandle Gag when I went through. I can't imagine how long those miles of trail must have seemed covered in snow. I crossed several of the same rivers before the trail crews did their magic. It was a hike I will always remember.

@@DanStenziano I really appreciate your videos. They’re not the average “bro look how hard we crushed it” vibe. My girlfriend and I watch each knew post together. I know it’s silly to be this sentimental about hiker videos, but it really takes my mind off things. I work as a homeless service worker and don’t hike as much as I would like to. I revisit your SSHR video probably too much.

Nice video, I love the Wonderland Trail. I can’t believe you went up there without an ice axe ! But I guess you didn’t need it. I want to go back, when I went there, there was too much fog in some areas that I was looking forward to, like Spray Park. It would have been nice if you had mentioned the campsites to get an idea of how was your daily mileage and elevation changes.
@DanStenziano
@DanStenziano Год назад
Thanks! I did go back and forth beforehand about the ice axe, but the snow was generally soft enough that it wouldn't have seen much use. A week or two earlier and I probably would have wanted one. Good point on the campsites, I should add that to the description at least.
