Oompa loompa, doom-pa-dee-doo, we've got a "Wonka" movie review. Alonso and Christy discuss the musical extravaganza starring Timothée Chalamet as a young Willy Wonka, who's just starting out as a chocolate maker. The film comes from "Paddington" and "Paddington 2" director Paul King; he also co-wrote the script with Simon Farnaby, based on the Roald Dahl characters. Co-starring Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key and Calah Lane. In theaters Dec. 15.

Olivia Colman came up doing a ton of comedy on British TV which makes it weirder seeing her now as this serious Oscar-winning dramatic actor :)

I feel like I can buy Willy Wonka as a young idealistic guy. He grows into a cynical weird psycho, but maybe he gives his factory to Charlie because he sees a little bit of his younger self in him

Please listen to the *vibrato* . I'm sorry, it's incorrect that Chalamet's voice was fixed in post-production. He sang "Pure Imagination" LIVE in his opening monologue on SNL recently, and both then and in the movie, he put a vibrato on key words like "world". A vibrato can only be sung by highly-trained singers. His singing was very good, whatever you may think of the songs. (I agree some of the songs may not be immediately catchy.)

And THIS, dear Christy & Alonso, is why we LOVE you, and ALWAYS will. Exemplary entry, and a spot-on summation of a film that was, for all its quirks, far better than expected and had any right to be. Thanks so much as ever.

Great movie review! I really loved this film. Timothee Chalamet did an excellent job as a young Wonka. He made the character his own but still manages to slightly channel Gene Wilder at times throughout the film. I’m a huge fan of the Willy Wonka ever since Gene Wilder’s 1971 original

OH MY GOD, ALONSO! You’re the ONLY other person I have ever heard say their first exposure to Olivia was Look Around You. Which, in my opinion, is still one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen in my life. I’m really hoping they rerelease it so more generations can see it. It’s so hard to find now 😩

Ironic that the actual faithful adaption from Roald Dahl's original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964) children's book is called "the terrible Tim Burton movie" by grumpy old men that think they're a hipster Roger Ebert.

what's weird about this kind of , it's always movies in development hell. Like Johnny Depp film was announced after 1998, and the film was released in 2005. So it's difficult to go into these without hearing all movie gossip before it's released.

These movies are made for those of us who like to dabble in the fungus. I like the fact Hugh is confusing in the role, I think that was intentional. I am looking forward to seeing this and take it for what it is. Juist like the original, bizarre and weird and in its own world.

Man, I absolutely hated this nearly from the opening second with the bad CGI ship. I probably should have walked out. It would have also saved me from the two 'adorable kids' running around without any intervention from the parents. I was seeing good opinions from strangers etc. but now that I think of it most were really saying "better than I expected" which isn't saying much. Maybe I would've liked it better had I seen it while in Italy where I couldn't understand anything. Would they make up Italian jibberish or just carry over all the silly names etc? I'll never know.

Its interesting, Alonso's take "don't think about this as a Wonka movie....and you will enjoy it" I didn't like this film, i think it very much misunderstand the underlying angriness that Dahl has in his text, especially in the Chocolate Factory books, and this film doesn't have any bite to it (pun intended).

@AbcDef-ww2gy
@AbcDef-ww2gy 6 месяцев назад
Yes, he is, because the original was also a cute family musical. Some adults are misremembering it as being much darker than it actually was. By the way, the world here is much darker than the world shown in both previous films.

@@AbcDef-ww2gy the 1971 film is also flawed and not the character depicted in Dahl's novel.
@AbcDef-ww2gy
@AbcDef-ww2gy 6 месяцев назад
@@thehobbsguy I knew that. (Dahl wanted Spike Milligan or Peter Sellers, and didn't like Wilder's version.) However, this version, which is the fourth version of Wonka if we include the book, has the most leeway for an actor, because it is the first time we have met a young Wonka, as opposed to the Wonka who is about to retire. A young Wonka, being an entrepreneur, should certainly be optimistic rather than cynical. However, the final point I made above still stands: the world depicted in this film (which I've already seen) is much darker and more venal than in either previous film.
