The latest episode of Wonky Wednesday where I explore log cabins and related projects. This week is joining Manx quilt blocks which fascinate me as all the measurements come from the maker's own hand. I also show how I make a basic cushion.

I so appreciate learning these different ethnic methods and your style suits me to a T. An entire quilt? That's what you just now finished, for me. I'm sure there's much more to the process but I think the artistry is in these samplings and explorations and what one does with it is another thing. I will be here, no matter what you create, with gratitude.

Thank you Ann, I would of course design a full quilt project in such a way that it enabled me to share lots of techniques and ideas and also so that people who didn't want to make a quilt could use the individual pieces for other things. ❤️

I have five large pieced tops that I will never quilt. I’ve finally decided to put them aside for machine quilting someday. Probably hired to do so. I much prefer quilt as you go. I can do a million small pieces and no large ones. As I say this I’m making a tablecloth that’s rather large but I plan to slow stitch on it for many days to come. Love to sew along with you. You give me all kinds of permission to let myself be more creative. ❤

I had forgotten about Wonky Wednesday, or Thursday morning for me down here, so when I saw you had posted it I got excited. In my head I could hear you saying, "Hello lovely people," and was looking forward to your "whittering as you call it. I find you whittering very soothing while I stitch, enhancing the mindfulness of slow stitching, as well as fascinating with the stories you tell and tangents you go off on. As for ironing, I have a Quick Press Seam Roller which I've found so good for these blocks and the weekly project we are all doing. Thank you for being you and doing you.

I’ve been thinking about making a quilt but the thought of tackling a huge quilt all by hand since I don’t have a sewing machine seemed a bit daunting…but you showing us how to make it in small manageable pieces is brilliant. And you answered some questions I had about the process. Thank you for your videos & your wittering, I love both! 😊

I love the fact that you are not persnicky about " these are the rules that must be follwed"! I have made many pillow covers with the envelope back, much easier than piping and zips and it uses up fabric you might not otherwise want to use. One of my favorites is done with a block I found in box of gifted fabric from a friends mother. The block about 12 inches square is hand embriodered with hearts and flowers in a neat nine patch pattern, low volume blues and pinks in a gazillion french knots, the lady probably made it in the 1970s very simple and attractive I bring it out for valentines and spring. Thank you for all the inspiration. I started the weekly slowstich in March and a caught up..finished a small boro inspired journel yesterday an put all my blocks into the journal..I did skip making the feather block but may try one today, my sewing room needs a serious tidy before I do any sewing today!

What a coincidence!!! I just emailed Espoma last week or so about my dogs eating the Plant Tone!! I’ve been using it for years, and wasn’t really worried when they would go after and eat it, but emailed just in case. Espoma did say there was nothing in their fertilizer that would harm an animal-if anything maybe an upset belly. As Espoma said to do, keep ALL fertilizers in a shed or garage away from animals, and to bury it in the soil a bit and water in well. I do have to put small fences around just in case they want to dig. Thanks Laura and Aaron for all the knowledge you pass along to everyone…I have ABSOLUTELY learned a lot these past 5-6 years!!

I also use the envelope backing for cushions and pillows etc. I really must get back on Instagram, I haven’t been bothered with it for ages as I find it too distracting, it’s the same with Pinterest, there’s just too much! Hello from Beautiful British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦 My daughters (4) did ballet. The oldest went the furthest ... I used crochet cotton(#10) to make little round covers for her pointe shoes. I may have used some fabtic glue, then hand stitched with a bendy beading needle around the edges. Later she had some that came with suede-ish toes. She will be 49 this year.... the second one may have had pointe shoes. Sewing ribbons and elastic to shoes, and taping down the ties to the underside of the toes. Crocheting bun warmers...mending tights ..tutus, all kinds of costumes

Beautiful cushion! I am trying to resist starting a log cabin while I finish a UFO, but it looks so fun and visually appealing. My favorite use for button plackets from men’s shirts is to use them for cushion backs, in lieu of envelop back. Now I cut them off the shirt with at least half an inch seam allowance.

I think I want to turn my Manx Blocks into a rice bag. Just not sure how to attach them. Would it be similar to how you put them together for the cushion? Probably wouldn’t need the batting? Hmmm. I have to many questions…may have to pick something easier to take on. lol Love your cushion. Hope it goes lovely with your new sofa.

@k3n.clothtales 2 месяца назад
Hi Jenny, you absolutely could make a rice bag, you could replace the blocks I made in the rice bag video with Manx blocks and use that method of joining and lining, or you could do it this way without a lining. maybe use a slightly thicker foundation cloth for the blocks, your bag would still be squishy but it would work I think. ❤️

Lovely project, K. Happy about a home-made stuffer cushion. Sorry to say I'm not clear about the size of the fabric for it. You mentioned same size as the outer shell before the seam allowance. But, the seam allowance on which? It's said to end up "larger than the outer", but I'm not getting how. Would you kindly clarify this size and seam allowance measurement when you have moment? Thank you so much. I very much enjoy your 'Clothtales":)
