"Korean bass singer Wonsick Oh possesses an extensive repertoire in both opera and song, having received the Special Prize at the coveted Beijing International Opera Competition (2017).
In 2013, Wonsick’s opera career began with the role of Sprecher in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. Whilst studying at university, he performed numerous roles including Il Commendatore in Don Giovanni (2014), Don Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro (2016), Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor (2016), Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte (2018), Simone in Gianni Schicchi (2021), Lakai in Ariadne auf Naxos (2022), Interrogator in Witch (World Premiere) and Argenio in Imeneo (2022).
Wonsick performed solo bass in Bach Cantata BVW4 (Christ lag in Todesbanden) and in various song cycle recitals, including programmes based on Brahms’s Vier ernste Gesänge and Wolf’s Drei Gedichte von Michaelangelo. He also completed a Diploma Programme under Charles Spencer and Markus Haudlla at the MUK Lied Academy (Music and Arts University to the City of Vienna).
Wonsick began his studies in voice at the Korea National University of Arts. Subsequently moving to London, he finished his MA in Vocal Performance with Distinction, on a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, having studied under Mark Wildman and Philip Sunderland. Wonsick is an alumni of the Georg Solti Accademia Bel Canto course where he studied with distinguished musicians including Richard Bonynge, Jonathan Papp, Barbara Frittoli, and Roberto Frontali.
Wonsick has been selected as Oxford Lieder Young Artists for 2022-2024.
In June 2022, he performed in a major concert at the Royal Academy entitled 'Homelands', alongside Ian Bostridge, Mary Bevan and actor Sir Simon Russell Beale. He is currently undertaking his Advanced Diploma course at the Royal Academy of Opera, and has been selected as a member of the prestigious Academy Song Circle.
