I worked for a tree service for 1 week as a teen . Got my check and saw i was only getting payed minimum wage so i quit and went to flip burgers. That was the hardest i ever worked for bottom wages .

I worked for a tree service for right about a year right out of high school as an odd summer job. I always stayed as far away from the chipper as I could. Something got stuck? Use a broom to shove it in from a distance. Otherwise fuck it. Shut down the machine and manually remove it. One of these guys is gonna end up getting pulled through reaching in like that while its running and man let me tell you. That won't be pretty.
The world screams that we are destroying the Amazon here in Brazil but they don't look that here 90% of the houses are made of bricks, and then all that wood is crushed. What a waste, very sad 😢.
What we can't see or know, is where the tree is located. My guess is it is at the bottom of a slope or there is a steep, narrow flight of steps between tree and chipper - hence everything carried out on shoulders.
I don’t know which is them standing in the middle of the feed Shute throwing wood in are those idiots reaching in so close to the feed rollers we had use long poles with some type of really thick plastic hook on the end if we we’re caught reaching in we were sent home

Tree work sucks I work for a company who has a 3 man crew 2 groundsman and a bucket truck operator. This company is so lucky to have what seems to be 6 or so guys . Makes it way easier compared to 2 guys hauling and chipping entire trees
I can't believe that these workers are happy to reach close to the blades to pull out or readjust the blocks of timber. Where are the safety standards for this job. I suppose this job is as easy as falling off a log.
So sad to see nice pieces of trunks destroyed like that. There is so much you can do with them, from furniture to fancy construction! Makes sens for branches though
Dollars and cents. You have to have a place to process the lumber. If you hire staff todo the firewood, will it pay their wages when you sellth3 product? You guys like the idea of using it for furniture, but then there’s the need to mill it and sticker & store it to cure. This is as green as it gets. It’s not ready to go to market for months. You know how much land you need to store it? Ya gotta keep it dry to a point or it never cures. Milled wood needs a roof over it. It’s easy to to say “firewood” & “lumber”, but it’s not that easy to process. There is a market for chipped wood as well, even if you give it away like some of our local tree pruners. If the tree owner wants the firewood, they cut it around 20” but it up to the owner to store & split it. The owners change their minds when they hear that and the wood is most efficiently and economically processed as mulch. The local pruners do hold burls and special pieces for some of their regular and reliable woodworkers for turning wood, making small pieces and carving. They hold the chunks, the craftspeople show up and haul them away. A year’s worth of pruning is a huge quantity of wood! If you keep the trunks (if they are straight enough) in 8 ft lengths or longer they are far too heavy to carry out and then you need more equipment to handle that.in this location there doesn’t appear to be a lot of room for a loader etc, plus that will be tearing up the yard with the tires in the wet grass. People don’t want their remaining landscaping destroyed. 😂😂. If you use a crane, you block the street, need permits, need a qualified operator at $100 per hour + here in Canada. You haven’t thought out any of the logistics. I have only mentioned a few. If you have the answers though, it’s a new business for yourselves to start up. 😂😂😂.

I’ve worked for a tree service for 25+ years and can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “You’re wasting all that good wood!” You point out a lot of the reasons why we chip a lot of it, not to mention a lot of that “good” wood is undesirable for lumber due to decay, species or the fact that yard trees are generally nothing like their forest-grown straight, knot-free cousins that ARE good for lumber! Most people don’t realize the incredible amount of labor that goes into turning logs into firewood for very little financial return. And despite public misconceptions, chips ARE NOT WASTED! They are used for landscaping, electric co-generation and some of ours are used for reclaiming areas following earth-moving and excavation. Tree services are a business, so they do what makes the most financial sense. If the firewood/backyard lumber market was lucrative, I guarantee all those logs would not be “wasted”!
@@johns3106 - I was winging it, but I split my own wood and have a bandsaw mill as hobby items. I keep healthy and family has access to wood products!! I live around Aspen & lodgepole pine. Any good wood for lumber I have trucked in. Even if I charged for the products I give to family & friends, I would never turn a profit. I get the most enjoyment from the live edge market. You get the ugliest pieces of crooked old wood with some nice elbows or joints and it can be a beautiful product!! Then a lot goes back as firewood too!! Hahaha. I have made some furniture pieces that are amazing as others have told me. I do sell those. It pays for bandsaw blades and fuel for the tractor I use for the splitter. PTO driven splitters can split ironwoods I think!! Haha,,, not really,,,,. I get a lot of my ugly ducklings (I call them) from a couple is tree cutters that do big country jobs. Every once in a while they get these very old and fat (up to 11 inch diameter) lilac pieces. What a beautiful & colourful crafting wood. It twists awfully when it’s stickered & in the pile, but enough stays straight for some of my buddies to use. I’m on a tangent now! Thanks for the work you do! It’s hard job, but I suspect quite rewarding as well. Please stay safe!

By the way I didn't use the word 'waste' and like millions I also buy chipboard furniture at Ikea's as I can't afford solid wood. In fact this is a positive aspect : *reusing* chipboard wood keeps it's CO2 captive as opposed to burning that wood. But then we are humans and many times have irrational feelings. It is still sad to see
For everyone talking about risk avoidance. Everyone that drives takes a risk every time they drive. Risk is a part of life and these workers know that when they signed on. Arborist work is full of risk but the reward is high. As for the wasted wood, any and all arborist are all about efficiency. They cannot wait for people to come pick up the wood for free on their own schedule, so they have to remove to complete the job and be paid. Chipping allows more wood into 1 truck and also saves money at as a dump fee. Yes, I am a arborist myself and own my own company and do everything seem in this video daily.

Wood chippers are built to chip no matter what way you feed it but you never feed a machine like that directly in front but off to the side Not even your proper PPE eye protection can prevent a chip from annihilating your safety shield, goggles. Not to mention my helper would be chucking the shit too. 2 man crew and one working BS.

Once you see the after effects of someone who has been pulled into a chipper, you will never allow any part of your body inside the shoot. Our community lost a man four weeks ago to Chipper exactly like this one in the video. It was not a pretty sight.
In my area some try to charge for the mulch, others just give it away. Those that give it away never have any left over after each sunny weekend. 1 or 2 weeks of clippings gone like that!! They are money ahead that way!! These guys saying firewood don’t understand it has to cure before you split it, needing a large area to store all the wood until it’s ready, then pay people to split it, then delivery as not everyone can or will haul it themselves. The market price for firewood isn’t always that great so they can potentially lose mor money than mulching it and giving it away,,,,,,,. Easy to say, hard to do!!😂😂😂.
That's a waste of wood. I dont' care if it is pine, dry it out and it burns. I would have split that wood up and let it dry. Then, I take twine and put it in bundles. I sell bundles for $10. I have had people pull in and buy four $10 bundles for campfires when they go camping. In fact, I might have 60 bundles out and put out my sign and it's all gone by the second day in the afternoon. People can go to stores and buy firewood but I have nice big bundles for $10 and it will last a whole evening for your fire. I even save branches that I clip with the snippers and bundle them up for kindling. One guy on youtube sold firewood. Then he separated his hickory, oak, etc. He shaved them into pieces and bagged it up for sale. Hickory chips. He turned a $200 cord of wood into $2.200 worth of hickory chips.
Waste wood is not valuable everywhere. Sure they could probably make a little extra from it, but its usually not worth the time. I live somewhere that doesn't get very cold and there isn't much camping going on. So there is only one large firewood seller for like 50mi or more. They do well but they take up most of the demand. Anyone else you see is just some guy here or there selling a bit of wood from his home in the winter, but thats about it..
What you don’t understand is…chippers have to take ALL sizes of material, from twigs to 20’ long logs that are 12”+ in diameter. And while it may be easy to throw a handful of brush or a firewood sized chunk in an upward facing chute, there is NO WAY a large log is going in other than on a horizontal feed table. Chippers have been around long enough to have become very efficient machines…there is a good reason why all the different brands use the same basic design…IT WORKS!

All you idiots making stupid negative comments about these workers obviously have never done tree work! First it may be cut short because, storm blew tree down in road and city sent some guys out to just get it out of road, or homeowner could have cut it up, or could have been in a spot where equipment could not have been brought in. People commenting about the rain, and not safe, working people just can't quit because its wet,tree is in road, has to be removed. There throwing it in chipper, of course they are, I removed trees for years, that's what we did, what do you want them to do, put each piece on a stretcher and gently ease it into chipper. There wasting firewood, not enough people burn wood,especially in southern states,we have dumps just for wood, you can usually get all you want for free, its not these guys fault, people are not burning firewood. People comment negatively on any kind of video out there, they buy a little chainsaw at Lowe's, and cut a 3inch,diameter tree in the backyard and think they are lumberjacks, soo silly! Then want to tell people that have been cutting trees for decades, how to do their jobs!
@Donald Atkinson - Have to agree with your comments. Picking up the logs and throwing them in is not unsafe. It is very physical, but then tree work is a dangerous, physical job. Reaching into the chipper is something that should be limited. They were in a hurry, probably because it was actively raining. We try to use as much for firewood as possible, but it is much more efficient, and less expensive, to chip the wood. Also, this was pine, not a hardwood. In the midwest we don't use pine for inside fireplaces. Outside burning is fine, but not inside. To use for firewood they would have to have a separate truck and trailer; recut the wood to firewood length, split the wood, dry it for a year, sell it, then deliver it. They have a big chipper for a reason; to chip large wood. This is what they do as their business plan. The chipped wood will either be used as ground cover or re-chipped as mulch.
The way they were 'throwing' those pieces of tree into that machine was the stupidest thing I have ever seen 'tree workers' do. The slightest slip on that WET road with bits of twig all over the show was an ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. - I know the shredder itself is 'set in' a bit but you could easily have had your fingers crushed or your hand before the other man could reverse the feed rollers. IT ONLY TAKES A SECOND and the damage is done. A good example of HOW NOT to load a chipping machine.

NOT that for 1 minute I expect it would change their stupidity, - BUT if it drew someone else's attention I would have possibly saved some fingers or their hand to say the least.

I've never performed brain surgery but if I see a brain surgeon show up in an operating room stumbling drunk and reeking of bourbon I can tell they are not fit to work. Some calls don't require direct expert qualification. If you're seated in business class and notice the pilot enter the cockpit reeking of booze are you gonna shrug and say to yourself, 'Well I've never flown a plane so I shouldn't say anything' or do you use common sense?

This comments section is FULL of B.S. by know-it-all’s that have no idea what it is like to do this type of work. Your analogies of a drunk pilot, etc. are ridiculously off the mark…the guy in orange isn’t drunk, he’s just undertrained. While what he is doing is not “accepted practice”, it is done all the time by inexperienced, undertrained workers in the rush to “get the job done”. There is a LOT of time pressure on jobs like this (time = $$) and the new guys often bear the brunt of this pressure. Having dangerous work practices occur like this isn’t really the fault of the worker (although he does bear some responsibility) it is the fault of the owners/foremen who need to say, “Let’s slow down a little and do things safely…here’s the RIGHT way to do this task”. Instead of, “C’mon…we were supposed to be out of here by 2:00 and it’s now 3:15!” This type of pressure often leads to dangerous shortcuts like we see here….it is management’s job to give the workers the time, skills and knowledge to get the job done safely and efficiently. I guarantee if you showed up to a job site with little training, you would make half a dozen potentially fatal mistakes within the first hour! So temper your judgements a bit!
Those people who heat their homes with wood have cried crocodile tears watching you waste such good wood. It doesn't matter if it's pine with resin or not. For a gasification boiler, this does not matter. But in terms of contemplating the work of powerful technology, this is still an entertaining sight.
I’ve worked for a tree service for 30 years and have heard the “wasted firewood” lament too many times to count! Fact is, it is not economically feasible most of the time to “save” this wood. Chipping it means you have enough space to go on to the next job without dumping (chunks of firewood fill up a truck REAL FAST) and you don’t have to worry about having space at the shop to store a bunch of wood, or driving 10 miles from the job to deliver it to someone’s house. Sometimes we do save and sell firewood, but only when that is the fastest, easiest and most logical way to get rid of the wood. And don’t worry…all those chips are almost always put to good use by garden centers, commercial composers, land reclamation specialists etc.

What a waste of a chipper and labor, good way to beat up your employees and make them never come back the next morning. Buy a Hooklift truck and drop a dumpster on the ground and throw all that chunk wood in the dumpster save yourself some hard work and save your employees soul.
