Rob, really great video. Super to see the variety and get your insight as to how they are used and how they change over time was great. It would be great for wood is good 3, to talk about figure and how these woods can be efficiently used in different projects to create interest.

Good Idea but maybe a bit later. Trying to cover the real basics first. Thinking the audience for these is very "NEW" to woodworking and lack any formal training.

Very very interesting. So many colors. Also, Rob, I don't think your mic was working in this video; it was just the camera mic.

Thanks Rob. A number of years ago I made a display of 14 different woods I had used up until then. Your video did not include any of these. Conversely, of all the woods you displayed, I haven't used any of them. With such inspiration I had to laugh. God spoke all of these into existence in just one day and more. So much more we have to learn. Great video. Thanks for a good job.

I'm in the process of building an acoustic guitar with purpleheart, hard maple and african mahogany layers on the neck and bindings and a bloodwood fretboard. I can definitely say that purpleheart, while eye catching, is a MASSIVE pain for small detailed hand work. The mahogany feels like clay in comparison. I've also noticed the purpleheart has a tendency to blacken pretty badly when using power tools so it requires a little extra care. The back and sides are Indian rosewood because as you said, the Brazilian stuff is just hard to find. 😅

One that focuses on the practical uses and differences in hardwoods would be nice. In example, I’ve heard that hickory was used for centuries for I think maybe it was smoking pipes or gun stocks or something, due to its hardness and availability. Poplar is apparently used for cheap, solid cabinetry. Cedar has the whole anti-bug thing to it. Cypress is a cheap alternative for outdoors stuff if you’re in the south where it grows locally. I think I heard someone say some sort of wood is used a lot for instruments due to good acoustics. That’s all I know of I think. It can be confusing to go to buy wood and see so many seemingly similar species, but not know what they’re each typically used for and why. Thanks!

Thanks Jeremy, I want to keep these episodes really basic for those that want to build but really dont know much about the material, like; why not use cross grain construction?
@JeremyB8419

RobCosman.com yeah, I saw that. As a novice, though, what I mentioned was something that seems like it should be a basic part of choosing wood, but that I haven’t seen any videos on. Why I mentioned it.

Granadillo is another name for the "Mexican Rosewood" featured at 9:50ish. It's distinct from Katalox, which is known as "Mexican Ebony", with creamy white regions and dark purple or black regions. They are both very hard and very heavy.

I did not know that chittum grew in the Adirondacks? I thought it only grew in my area of TN. I have 55 acres of mountain land and it's full of chittum burl. The stuff does not rot. The trees will lay on the ground for years. When you cut it with a chainsaw, the sawdust looks like it glows. It is a very hard wood. It is beautiful. I need to do something with all my burl. I try to collect the burl stumps when they die. The stumps are hard to cut up, because they grow around the limestone rocks and you will mess up a saw blade sawing them up. Good video.

Great video. Is there a way to prevent the wood from discoloring? Perhaps with UV-protected laquer?

I love combining woods in my projects but something I have been wondering (as I'm fairly new to all this) is are there combinations of woods that impact negativity on one another in terms of say oils from one wood effecting another or if one is less stable can that effect its neighbour? I come from an engineering background and this is common where you don't mix particular metals for various applications. Also I'm irish, we have a reasonably large amount of bog wood, usually oak, it's been in bogs so long it's near impossible to cut and so is normally used as sculptural pieces, it weighs a tonne!
@TaylerMade
@TaylerMade 5 лет назад
talking of heavy woods, have you ever come across australian iron wood. it weighs the same as a piece of metal and is really hard on blades etc. i had a piece many years ago for a client and spent more time on the stones touching up edges than i did on actually building the piece lol.

Everyone, please make an effort to make sure your source is ethical. There is a lot of illegal or poorly practiced logging in many regions with these species. It'll help keep these woods available in greater supply in the end.

So paduk and blood wood will both turn brown even if finished?
@SixStringsBroken
@SixStringsBroken 3 месяца назад
Finish will slow down the process, especially if it's fully sealed, but yes it will eventually brown. I accidentally left a piece of padauk outside for a week, and even with some protective wax it was a completely different piece afterwards.

Bloodwood is probably my favorite exotic right now. It is deeper and more vibrant than pandauk, redheart, and other reds. It's expensive but reasonable compared to the ebonies, rosewoods, and others. I've dabbled in those too, but only for pens and other small projects like that.

Question about the color over time: will the types of wood such as purpleheart stay "purple" for instance if coated with oil and kept out of the sunlight? Or is it an inevitability no matter what?
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 5 лет назад
Finishes can do both, sometimes speed up the color change and some UV protective finishes can slow it down, it will eventually do what it wants so the emphasis is on "slow down", not stop.

Hello Rob, I am Harry, and live in Nairobi, Kenya. Thanks for the walkthrough on exotics. I am fairly new to woodworking and would value your advice. I recently went to look at some equipment at a cashew nut factory which was closing down and came across a pile of hardwood strips which had been used for 40 years as slats on racking on which sack of nuts were stored. The wood was clearly very strong, VERY heavy and I was told that one had to pre-drill to knock a nail intoit. The slats are two and one eighth by one and one eighth and twenty inches long. I have since identified the wood as Elgon Olive (Oleo Capensis), listed as one of the heaviest woods in the world. I paid $153 (US ) for 850 pieces of this wood! I have made cutting boards and cheese boards, and have made my money back already, and still have over 800 pieces left. can you or other subscribers think of other uses please?

What a great story! If you have time you can make jewelry boxes o cigar boxes. I am trying to think about a way to make the most possible money of that wood and people pay a lot for jewelry so it makes sense to pay top dollars for a box to store it. Rob has a video series about a candle box where he teaches to make the box with a wooden hinge... Cheers!

Hey Rob, making a cutting board, using maple,tiger wood, Purple Heart, Paducah. When I sand it the whole thing turned orange. How can I get the orange off? Carl from Tejas
@10fullol
@10fullol 5 лет назад
that is a tough one Carl, the orange spills over so easily. About the only way is to plane not sand. Even happens with the finish, color wants to bleed.
