In my experience when you get dark floors of any kind foot prints and dust show up a lot more . I have had dark brown wood look tile and later on replaced it with white oak wire brushed wide plank wood look tile so I didn’t see every foot print after coming home from working outdoors all day . I’ve also learned sweeping is pointless because of the small grooves from the wire brush texture , yes it’s possible but vacuuming is way easier to maintain a dust free tile floor . Definitely holds up to the dogs and kids but is also very cold to step on compared to wood or LVP . 1/16 spacers are best so you don’t have a giant grout line as well as the color being the shade of the tile as you mentioned helps make it look more like real wood . You also want to keep in mind that laying new tile is best don’t when the entire area is the same tile not broken into different colors and textures helps resale value and the flows a lot nicer through the house if your not selling . All this is costly of course but what I did was when I found a great priced tile I finally liked I bought as much as I needed with extra for mistakes and kept it in my garage . Then a month later I bought the grout , spacers laticrete and any other install material I needed . Finally after Four months I had enough to pay a professional to install . Yes it took a while but I was able to make a rather expensive project affordable by doing this in monthly blocks . This allowed me to still have money for everyday expenses and get what I wanted at the same time .

Thank you, Coral, for a very informative video. We live on Maui across the street from the beach. We installed luxury vinyl flooring, but due to the humidity, it buckled in several places. We are seriously considering the wood-look tile. We think that it will do better where we live. Your video helped encourage us to look into it.

Great video and 2 more advantages. 1. It's easier to clean with no splinters like real wood or carpet stains. 2. Some one who has breathing problems like Asma won't inhale carpet dust or fine real wood floor shavings.
@cglees

I think there is a 4th con or maybe it’s tied to your third point about how hard the floor is, definitely something to consider - anything you drop onto the floor will get damaged. If you drop a cup or glass, phone, laptop, tablet etc onto hardwood or laminate you might get lucky, but you can guarantee if you drop those things on a tiled floor they will smash. Kids running and falling on tile will hurt themselves more than on hardwood flooring. Just something to consider, the main pro is it’s durability but that’s a double edged sword

Great Video, I've had Pergo water resistant Laminate that was ruined by dogs, I placed two types of wood look Vinyl in two separate bedrooms that got gouged and scratched, I Installed builders grade 12x12 tile in Kitchen and Baths and still looks great, these wood look tile will be good for my forever, good for pets and the Handicapped that need wheelchairs or walkers. Just have to decide if I'm still man enough and have the strength to haul this stuff around to install it myself. lol

Thank you, This was so helpful. I'm considering the wood look tile over laminate or vinyl. You made some very good points to consider. One thing you didn't mention is the grout. Grout tends to get dirty over time and can be hard to clean. I have tan-colored grout in the kitchen and its so hard, if not impossible, to keep clean. Dose the dark brown grout get dirty or start losing color (turning grey) over time?

your comment that the grout needs to be same color as tile is spot on IMHO. Laying tile length-wise in a corridor makes the corridor look narrower, I would lay the tile at 90 degrees to the wall making the corridor look wider. You need to level the floor under the tiles, but you also need to level the tiles one on the other. I use home depot levelers to avoid tile lippage.

Very helpful video. You give so much useful information. You're very articulate and you know a lot. I'm remodeling my condo. I currently have wall-to- wall carpeting except for vinyl in the kitchen and tile in the bathroom. The condo is almost a 1,000 square feet. I was planning to put tile in my kitchen and maybe also in my office. And I was considering putting tile all over the condo except the bedroom. I think I want carpet in the bedroom as you have chosen. I love wood-look tile. You house looks great. And I love that it is easy to clean. It seems like a healthy choice in that you can get the floor much cleaner than with carpet. And I love the durability of tile. But the noise issue is slowing me down. My condo is very quiet and I want to keep it that way. I'm now thinking I may just replace the wall-to-wall carpeting and only put tile in the kitchen and bathroom.
@CoralHoyt
@CoralHoyt 5 лет назад
Thanks! I'm glad it helped you. Yeah, if sound is a big sticking point for you, I wouldn't do this throughout your condo. I think your idea to put it just in the kitchen and bathroom sounds great. Then you get the best of both worlds.

Hi! Thanks for the informative video! I have another question. Does this color disguise dirt and dust? I wanted to go with a dark colored wood tile, but friends of mine said it was hard to clean. Since yours is lighter but still very beautiful, is it low maintenance or can you go a week or 2 without sweeping? We don't have pets, but young kids.
@CoralHoyt
@CoralHoyt 5 лет назад
For the most part, yes it does. We have two cats and a dog, and I usually don't see the fur on the floor too often. I definitely have to clean our light grey tile in the kitchen MUCH more often. I'm not big on sweeping, but I do use the roomba or a cordless vacuum to do a quick clean up at least once a week to get up all the fur.

Hello and thanks for the great video on this subject. My wife and I live in the Houston area in fact we live in the Cypress to be exact and we just sold our house and are moving into a newer home in March. We are interested in ripping out the old carpet at our new house and installing the wood look tile in the home but have no idea where to start so seeing your video was really great timing. Since you are located in Houston would you mind sharing with me the name of the company you used and which name brand of tile you bought since it sounds like you and your husband are like minded since we do not want to break the bank on the cost of the tile and having it installed. Also that was very informative of you to talk about the hidden cost of leveling I would've never have thought about that and I'm sure it would've come up and we would've had to pay more, so thank you. Anyways, if you don't mind letting me know who you used and the manufacture of tile you used I would appreciate it.

We recently bought a house in AZ , and we went with the wood looking tiles in all living area except in bedrooms with the builder options spending almost $20,000 As mentioned it looks awesome, but it is hard on our feet with the some of tile edges are sharp on my feet. yes it doesn't absorb the sound and husband works from home , always on meeting. If you're going to put the tile on a wooden floor I would go the extra and use the Schluter Ditra underlayment system and it will work better than a backerboard to keep un necessary weight off of the second floor. Hi, we have just put down wood look tiles with a grout that is meant to be dark brown but it also has lightened significantly. Just wondering if you found a solution or if sealer helped. Our grout is actually crumbling in places and no one seems to know why even though it’s only been 2 weeks since laid and all instructions followed by a professional tiler. Also every time the grout is wiped it’s bringing up sediment with it. So frustrating!

Show the floor and details of it other than us watching you talk the whole time.

You spent your entire video talking and didn't even show how the wood look tile looks like. This is a waste of my time!
