In this video, we look at a wood-shell Pearl Export snare drum, then use exactly the same brand-new skins, hoop and strainer on a metal shell. Same brand, same series.
How much difference does it make?

Well now my next drum addition is going to be a wood snare. The metal one has that clarity, brightness and ability to cut through that I usually want but there's a warmth and thickness to the wood one that I really enjoyed. Thanks for putting this together. Thanks for the snare tuning tip too, amazing.

wood sounds more warm and the metal on sounds more concentrated

I like wooden ones because of the crack Although, I’ve never played a wood snare

You are the first person I have found after MONTHS of scouring videos who has given me good advice about tuning and that was by accident lol. 😁🙏🏼 Thank you! x

Thanks. I was surprised by how many aspects of the tone and response were different.

I’ve been feeling for a while now that metal snares are better for smaller rooms. I think because you don’t need a lot of room for them to respond because metal is more resonant than wood. I had been obsessed with getting good wood snare sounds for two long before realizing this. This video has added support for my intuition.

Man that's a tough choice. The amount of difference is surprising. to my personal tastes I like the volume of the metal snare but the wood snare has a sound I could really work with. That metal snare does have quite an attack. I do however LOVE metal piccolo snares.

I mean the real answer is “why not both?” - the intention here is more to get an understanding of which situations to use them in

@@adamsteelproducer I totally agree, but my studio has ummm, a slimmer budget profile haha. I will solve that problem soon enough as I'm literally working with a maple snare and a brass piccolo snare. This is the very next thing I plan to remedy after I get a Midas stage box to utilize the other 16 of my 32 outputs.

Really nice video, exactly what I needed. I was thinking about buying a metal snare, because I thought it would fit my style better. I actually don't like the metal snare in isolation (snare mics only), but with the whole kit it sounds great. I think I won't buy one in the near future, though... not sure :D An acrylic snare would also be interesting in comparison.

I was surprised by the "boing" in the sound of the wooden one. I had this idea of change my steel snare (mid 90's Mapex Mars Series) for Wood, but now im not sure... its a matter of personal taste but i prefer the steel in your video ! Thanks ! 🥁🤟

This sound is beautiful. Would this E and G tuning be 329hz and 392 hz on DrumTone?

Prefer the sound of the wood by far. Much more resonant. That "ringyness" really sounds perfect in a live setting in the mix.

That's an entry level student drum. It's the cheapest metal snare Pearl made. To get a closer comparison use a Pearl Sensitone snare and you will have a better challenger.

They’re literally from the same range, it’s not about “expensive vs cheap”

Definitely very different beasts. What are most drummers using on recordings? Or is it 50/50?

Probably depends on the genre. A lot of heavier rock and metal drummers use metal snares from what I can tell

Wood were created for the musics. So. I'd choose the wooden snare shell and love his pop💥

You use wrong method with the note tuning. Thicker shell means higher note. So on your thicker shell the bater head will be more tensed. So more attack more crack etc etc... you cant compare correctly 2 different depth and thickness using same tuning.

Metal snares are for college marching bands. Wood snares are for music.

Strange opinion, I’m sure millions of drummers disagree
