By no means am I a pro at tile but when I do wall tile I start at bottom and make sure the 1st row is level and let it sit overnight. After that tile will not slide down wall because you have a firm lower base and if you use spacers and 1st row is level, every row above will be level as well. Very nice looking stove corner though!
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 4 года назад
In this case I used wall tile adhesive which prevents sliding and started at top so that whatever odd sized tile was left at the bottom I could cover it with the rock

@kirkstinson7316 Год назад
Well, right off your wall heat shield is NOT to code. Not in the US or Canada . You need a 1 inch air space between the cement board and the Sheetrock wall. And it needs a 1 inch gap at the bottom so air can flow up behind the cement board

Do you need 1” air space on the sides as well, or can the sides be closed off?

Not bad. But you. Should use mortar cement instead of glue. Glue is not strong to the heat. With mortar you start from bottom. Measuring first of course to have full piece in the top

Love the tile. Can't wait to see the finished product. Just in time too, it must be getting chilly there too! Up here, Yooper territory, it's definitely "fireplace" weather.

If you have a local a/c or electrical supply warehouse they often have metal cover plates that already have nice color finishes on them like bronze/white/beige etc so that you can find something to compliment the look of your tile. We did this with our outdoor kitchen. We ran wiring for an outlet on the counter but we decided not to install the actual outlet at this time since we are selling our house but still wanted to leave the wiring accessible in the event the new owners want to put an outlet in

just wondering why you didnt install spacers behind the concrete board... in my area its code to do that? As a heat shield barrier so the heat has airspace behind to escape otherwise it will conduct through the tile and concrete board straight to the studs? Just wondering because I am about to do a similar project and would live to avoid doing the airspace gap but it seems like its necessary.
@jstewart845ss
@jstewart845ss 4 года назад
Yeah everything I've read said a 1" air gap is required even behind non combustibles. I downloaded the National fire code info. His clearances are far too short.

If you have used a special drywall for behind a woodstove, do you still need the Dura rock on it before you do the tiles
@southsidebaynuts

My advice for DIY'rs NEVER start tiling from the top. Screw a 1x2 ledger at a determined height of the first coarse and begin tiling. This guy must've been fighting gravity. No thinset will lock those tires in place while your setting the tiles below. The more courses you have on the wall the more they want to slide down because of the weight
@Kmjones12986
@Kmjones12986 8 месяцев назад
He used mastic and didn't use the correct size trowel either. Mastic is acrylic based not sure if it's combustible or not. I would highly recommend using thinset mortar.

LOOKING FOR THE 2ND PART that would include grouting etc??? Really enjoy this as it's a project I'm about to start against a flat wall (i.e not in corner)...so, you didn't have to remove the underlying gypsum board? I have wood panelling I'll definitely remove.

Well now you put that up and it looks good.........and you want to remove the elecrical boxes. Id recomend not to. Just pull wires out but leave box in ant then cut the back of a electic outlet out enough so it still looks usable but is just a fake and mount it to a faceplate and make it so by the look they look usable but actualy they would be 2 small safes for whatever you want to hide that fits in there.

Still catching up with old videos. I am confused, why didn't you cut the drywall and remove the outlets and wires prior to installing the tile? This looks awesome! This tile does look so much like your floor boards. So enjoying your channel! @SSLFamilyDad

Depends on how close the stove is. To be considered a non combustible surface it needs an air gap. Mine was measured from the drywall behind the tile for the distance

Always take your plugs out! Cant put the plate on if they are recessed behind the tile. Plugs have ears. those ears should be on top of your tils so the plate works. Hopefully, you didn't lock them in behind the tile.

Great Job, looks sweet. Just wondering why you didn't use adhesive on the backer board and more screws ? Are the studs 16'' or 24'' O.C. ? I was taught that way, that's why I'm asking, of course I could be doing it wrong this whole time !! lol.
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 5 лет назад
It would not have hurt to put some adhesive on the back of the concrete but in reality I figure you are just gluing to paper on the drywall so probably doesn't add much strength. I hope I used enough screws! lol if it all falls off I'll do a video:)
