@@TurnAWoodBowl Tasmania is indeed a paradise island state of Australia, great climate, fantastic scenery, wilderness areas and a fantastic coastline. Less than half a million population, we are never overcrowded on beaches or mountain areas. We live on a natural hillside 5-acres, with many different species of hardwoods, eucalyptus, wattle, she-oak, blackwood etc. so have plenty of material to choose from, over the years bush fires have gone through the place, leaving so many big dead trees waiting for someone to come along and make use of them. Over the years we have burnt many tons as firewood, long before my attention turned from metal machining to wood turning. As I am into my octogenarian years, I need to learn very quickly from expert wood turners to save time (my enemy) Your video presentations are excellent, and along with a small number of other similar experienced teachers, speeds my progress. Having used metal lathes for years, I am not a newcomer to lathes and toos etc. so I very quickly pick up the skills I need from RU-vid presentations. I have watched many of yours, recently I watched the wood barn shelving and storage project, which was most interesting. With a friend of mine we will be doing some timber milling to cut slabs of various thicknesses, which adds to the interest and timber learning curve. Thank you for sharing your expert skills. From time to time I get involved with NAA JPL and other US institutions with astronomical projects, being the most southern observatory in this part of the world. Kent, I watched this video again because a friend asked for a salad serving bowl and I have a piece of cured oak that is the ideal size. Experience with cured oak tells me this blank is going to be super hard. You give some excellent pointers for dealing with that in this video. You probably won't see this comment because this is an old video, but I just wanted to say how much I love your videos. I don't do this but I love watching these being made, every video I've watched before discovering your channel was always just a sped up video of the wood being turned, they are cool videos and I love them, but I was always sad to never get more info and find out more about this art form. I never had any idea what they were really doing and why they were doing it. Then I came upon your channel and I am loving all your videos and how you teach and explain everything you do, I don't feel so in the dark anymore and I love it! Its made me appreciate and enjoy these wood turning videos even more :) Thank you! Love your videos, I don't usually get to comment because I come upon them on my recommended feed on RU-vid and I usually only watch on my TV :)

I love how thos medullary rays formed beautiful concentric rings perpendicular to the oak grain. Oak is a such a complex wood.

Hi. I've just watched this video. Wow. Brilliant. A few weeks ago I was given 8 oak beams from a French war ship that was made in 1706. It's incredible stuff. Talk about rock hard lol. It's even got holes with wooden pegs in them from when it was manufactured. Just thinking as I'm new to turning if I'm not experienced enough to tackle that yet. I ve done some pens so far, and again, wow 500 year old pens. The beams are all around 8 feet long and measure around 10 x 8 inches, or larger. They weigh an absolute ton. It needed a crane to lift them from the garden they came from and get them to my place. After watching your video, what stories could they tell you lol. I'd love to send you a small piece over to you and let an expert have a go with it. If you would like some, I'll gladly send you some over from the UK it's the least I can do with how much I've learnt from watching your videos. Thanks again. Geoff

With those corners (the off cuts). You could make a toothpick holder, salt & pepper shakers, and a stick pot/vase. Might be a profitable...., I mean, neat little set. 😉 I’m cutting a change bowl/cup from an oak crotch. The top of the Y is 5.5” x 2.5” and the bottom of the Y is roundish 3.5” - 4.2”. It was cut down to about 6’ length about two months ago, two weeks ago I cut 14” from the top of the split. I don’t have a bandsaw yet, so I threw the long blade on my mom’s jigsaw (that I’m borrowing), and I’ll tell you what brother, that wood is hard as stone. 🤯 It can’t really be that dry yet? I finally got the nerve up to just go ahead and, freehand corrected the way shallow factory grind. It took a little fine machine file work to finish smoothing it up. Cut a 100% better now. That raises a point I’d like to get your opinion on. Leave the burr? Or, Hone the burr “away”? I think I prefer to get rid of the burr as part of the “sharpening process”. It’s becoming a ritual. 🤪 I’ve only been turning for about a month. So, you know, my vast existence. 😜😂🤪 Probably won’t be ready to fill an Art Market booth till mid-late next year. Just moving slower than I used to be able to, and a smaller bench top unit. Wen 8”x 12” variable speed. Does the job but definitely looking to get the Wen 14”x 20” & the bed extension, but first thing with the sale of a couple of sugar bowls, stick vases, mushrooms and tops. 🙏 I’m getting at least a three piece set of carbide bit tools. Any way. Great video. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and have learned so much. Which has been part of the inspiration to ask for a lathe for my birthday and actually got it. I’ve been saying X Box since mine died, but I’m definitely glad the fam waited till I asked for my lathe. Keep up the great work. Again, thanks.

Thank you for writing and sharing! I'm so glad you are turning as well! What cool creations can you give your family and friends after hours of playing video games? ;) Ha! Kinda true though. Ok, your question about honing is a good one. If you are seeing good results, keep it up. Do what works for you. If you are sharpening with traditional oxide wheels, honing helps a bit. I've found that sharpening on CBN wheels leaves a much cleaner finish and I don't hone the bevel after sharpening on CBN. Also, while sharpening and honing can make the edge cleaner and sharper, it will only last a short time. As I mention in my online Sharpening Class, we aren't sharpening a knife that will be used only occasionally. We are sharpening a workhorse and it's going to get dulled within a few minutes no matter how much time we spend on the edge. But again, do what works for you. If you see better results then that's fantastic! All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent

This is just what I need to see. I am working on a piece of oak now, although it is not 100 years old, it is rock hard. I have sharpened my gouge twice just on the exterior of the bowl. It is turned around now, in my chuck and I am starting to hollow it out. It's time to sharpen again, then I can continue to hollow the interior. I may have to sharpen more than the 5 times you did on your bowl, but I'll stay at it until I get through. Great video! Thanks!

Beautiful bowl! I recently had the opportunity to work on 100 year old white oak as well, originally it was a bridge used on the family farm. The weathering was amazing and kept the rim wide to show off the decades of weathering. About 10 planks, 8’ in length were given to me for my own bridge repair that are 10-13” in width and 3” thick. Luckily, and I’m glad I never used them as a bridge until I decided to turn a piece and I am now making heirloom pieces for family members. Be well and take care.

Hi Kent, I am from New Zealand and have turned American White Oak. It certainly is a very hard timber. I have noticed that it dulls my tools a lot quicker than some other timbers. Lovely bowl.

Imagine what this piece of wood has seen... Here in the frontier zone between France and Germany there are still oak trees that are 'spiced' with projectiles of all kinds of arms. Sawmills are still concerned about this.

Wow, yes indeed. I would think most of that "spice" is lead and should mill fine. I know a guy that made a cabinet door with part of a musket ball embedded in the wood from the American Civil War. You gotta love history…and trees. Happy Turning!

Nice work! One guy intentionally sprayed a light mist of water on his work and then dried it with a towel before applying finish to give it a more raised grainy look and feel to accentuate the wood grain. He did that to give customers a little more variety now and then in his work. I thought that might be something to try in the future.

Nice video and what a beautiful piece of wood! I work with a lot of white oak because I have it laying around. I used to make arts & crafts furniture and have a lot of 1" thick cut offs from boards that I saved and I'll glue them up into bowl blanks. The results can be spectacular. I use a stain which really makes the grain pop out visually.

Incredible that I found this video in your collection, I have some extremely dry and hard Hickory tree saddle sections I am struggling with ! Like turning cement, I’m going to watch this with great attention, thanks ! ⭐️ I also ordered a Wolverine sharpening setup since doing it by hand has caused some irregular bevels.

its jsut sawmill marks... have a log cut at a circular sawmill today and it has those exact sme marks... they make circular saw blades that are 36, 48 or more inches... still available... look up sawmill supplies

Kent, always great information... today I was turning a piece I cut from an ancient spruce beam. OMG, this wood was hard! Spruce is generally not a preferred turning wood, but this stuff has terrific character to the grain. I lost count of the times I sharpened, but the result was excellent. Beautiful pine-like grain grain with rock-hard resin channels. I had to come to your channel to see if you'd encountered something similar... and of course you had. Thanks! You've been a huge part of my wood turning journey.

A way to recognize old wood is a very high ring count (rings per inch) and high tar which is why old wood is much more rot-resistant than fast-growing new wood. The oak cutoff has a high ring count and a dark colour.

An amazing talk through tutorial again, Kent. Selfishly for me, the timing was as though you read the current challenge I have with an old dry piece of African hardwood. The piece I have is so old and dry that it takes the edge off my gouge in about 40 seconds and I keep thinking I am doing something wrong. Wish I could get a piece of this over to you for me to see if I am approaching the piece correctly. As always thank you for sharing your knowledge with us "wannabe" bowl turners. David, African hardwood can be incredibly hard. Have you looked it up on the Janka Hardness Chart? They measure the amount of pressure it takes to embed a steel ballbearing halfway into the woods surface. Check it out, it's eye-opening. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

That's a Vicmac chuck. However, after I got my chucks, Hurricane came out with ones amzn.to/3dUZRLJ that are almost identical to the Vicmarc for much less $$$. Check them out. Happy Turning!

I have a lot of Heart Pine boards well over 100 years old. Is Heart Pine good for turning bowls

Most definitely! The resin in that heart is what makes it so weather and insect resistant, not to mention hard as a rock. Have fun turning that. You may need to sharpen a bit more often, but it should turn fine. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

wonderful bowl Kent. I got my Tried and True finish but haven't used it yet. SHould I store in glass container or is plastic OK? Thanks for the tips.

Good question. The finish will start to cure if it oxidizes, so keep as much as possible in the original container and well sealed and put what you'll use in the next week or two into a glass jar. That way you're not opening and closing the original container. Happy Turning!

I noticed that you are wearing a glove on your left hand. I want to buy a glove, because I have burned my hand from turning too long and the chisel heats up. The problem is I can’t find a glove that should work. What should I be looking for? I have to buy it online because my hands are bigger than the normal XL.

Love oak. love your bowl design. Do you know the specific species? looks like a red oak species. We have a lot of Burr Oak in our area (a white oak species). Great video.

Barry, thank you. I don't know for sure. It appears to be a white oak, as red oak is more brittle usually. There are estimates that there are hundreds of different oaks and they are cross-breeding and further confusing the issue. I know it's a good looking oak. Ha. ;) Happy Turning!

Kent, when you get a very dry piece of wood to turn, have you ever soak it in water for and hour or so to soften it a bit?

For areas like that rim bead, do you ever use a three point tool? It was a favorite of mine when I was able to do a lot of turning.

I'm turning a piece of black walnut end grain on inside ( just a slice of the tree). It's horribly tough going. Is it the way I've got the grain oriented or is it just very hard wood ?. I haven't turned bowls in over 50 years but I don't remember it being this hard

Kent, another great video. What degree are you sharpening this swept back bowl gouge too? I'm having too many issues with tearout on end grain and making the sand paper mfg. rich.

Hi Kent, are these normal dovetail jaws on the chuck? Because I would expect they should close almost completely... when you mount the bowl, the jaws are still open and in this case the force of the jaws is not equally on then tennon but just the corners of the jaws grab on the edges...

You are correct. This bowl is sized right at the crossroads of where I wish the manufacturers would make new sized jaws. I should have turned the tenon to fit the jaws, but then the tenon would have been too small. If I moved up to the next larger size of jaws, the tenon would have been much too large. So, I cheated the middle. It can be done, but you also have to accept that the tenon is not fully seated and can come loose in the process. Thanks for the question. Happy Turning!

Have you ever turned cedar? and if so what did you use on it? tried and true? Your videos are so informative and I have a lot of cedar that I have been turning. Got tried and true for Christmas, using it but it seems to soak up so much of the tried and true. Hope I didn't mess up.

Yes I have. Cedar will soak up oils almost endlessly. I have found a base coat of shellac and lacquer makes a beautiful finish with cedar. Happy Turning!

That's a beauty!..a guy just gave me 2 24" wide by 6 foot long and 3 inch thick white oak slabs..getting ready to cut it up for bowl blanks..it is rock hard and very dry too!..was stored in a barn for years..should be fun...I like that linseed and beeswax finish..I'll have to try it..I'm a beekeeper so all I need is linseed!..did you use pure linseed or the other stuff? Mike, that sounds great. I use Tried and True Danish which is (from what I understand) polymerized linseed oil. and nothing else, no dryers, metals, added chemicals, etc. Here's a link. amzn.to/3q2Roc7 Happy Turning!

Mike, you can try making your own finish. I often use something called OB shine juice that I make myself, it's 1/3 boiled linseed oil, 1/3 denatured alcohol, and 1/3 shellac. There are videos on YT about making and using it. Just wipe it onto the wood until it's fairly well saturated, then spin up the lathe and start polishing. Have to build up some heat because it's a friction polish. Gives a pretty nice results. You can make your own shellac too. I think Kent shows how to make shellac in one of his videos.

@@feetachemail yes...2 of them..super heavy!..got one blank now 10.5 inches ready to spin. Theres also a big knocked over white oak around the corner from me I'm gonna hunk up when the weather gets better..I'm in WNY. Recently picked up a big load of fresh cut sycamore too...got a few big ones cored out already and need to process the rest into blanks for coring.😃
