Wood turning an Angel out of Acacia. The Angel in this video is 10 inches tall with turned wings that wrap towards the angels front. I have seen a similar design where the wings turn outwards from the Angel but in this design i use a winged bowl method to make the wings lay in a more natural way making for a more striking Angel design.

The Angel design has a very light sales patent on it and may not be sold by anyone else at a market I am attending. This is here for a specific reason and due to a certain individual. My apologies to everyone else. It can of course be turned and sold at any market I am not at and I would be delighted to see it being done.

Great video Shay! As soon as I saw the slow motion I said to myself, “ooooooh no, no, no, no!!” Then BOOM! So distressing when that happens! But, as you say, it happens to everyone. I was actually recording the deepest cherry vase I’ve ever done recently. It was going to be my first uploaded video to my channel and I was really proud of it. But when I was about 97% done with the hollowing I got a catch and it exploded on me! Oh well, chalk it up to a learning experience! Haha! Loved the video this week. Can’t wait until the next one! Just found this. Amazing. I’m new to turning. Can I ask how do you sand those wings with those cuts. Seems like I’ll get my fingers jammed? Could you make the bowl first and cut out the sections after
@BBTurning
@BBTurning 10 месяцев назад
I used a piece of sponge behind the sandpaper Nicholas but what I have been doing lately is as you suggested and cutting the wings after I finish them. You can't use a bandsaw to do it though as it will rip the wings apart, you need to use a fret/coping saw. If you have a look at the other blue angel video I show how to do it. Here is a link to it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xiCO6svxYbc.html Shay

@BBTurning
@BBTurning 3 года назад
Thanks Glen, yes I tried it that way first and found it was a lot more difficult getting them the same on all sides. When you mark on a flat piece of wood it's very easy to get them balanced. I have an idea in my head for a mark 2 angel which will require a saw cut after the wings are turned. I just have not had the time to prototype it yet. Shay

Lovely work ,would drilling the wings after they were finished work ?
@BBTurning
@BBTurning 2 года назад
The problem is Nicholas lining up the spaces in the wings and drilling a very thin piece of wood. I kind of got around the problem in this years angel video by doing it differently due to having resin in the wings. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xiCO6svxYbc.html

@@BBTurning I'm going to make some of these. Any tips other than what is in the video?
@BBTurning
@BBTurning 2 года назад
@@tmikeporter I did a mark2 as a one off special there might be something else in that. I did use a different way to get the gaps in the wings ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xiCO6svxYbc.html . Grain wise just make sure you use a tight grained wood and especially with the wings it cannot have a flaw, even the slightest crack will cause them to blow out as you will be bringing the edges to practically nothing. When doing the wings treat it like a winged bowl and remember speed is your friend with them. If you can get the halo to sit in between the top wing gap it looks very well. Shay
