I turn a small lidded box from English Oak, with a Queen Ebony knob. UKIWS: www.ukiws.co.uk/ Yorkshire Grit: yorkshire-grit.... Hampshire Sheen: www.hampshiresh... Simon Hope: www.hopewoodtur...
A great job and an excellent video to show it. Could you tell me what the sanding tool you use is ? It looks much handier than a power drill and sanding pad.
Really Nice Mike! Do you know how the Yorkshire grit and Hampshire shine compare to Cap'n Eddies shine juice and Hut wax? Seems maybe similar to me just looking at the result.
Hi Curtis, I made a small recess in the lid, slightly smaller than the tenon on the knob, and with a very small amount of medium CA glue, glued it in place. Hope this answers your question, and thanks for watching. Take care Mike
Nice lidded box. I was off work today and did a search for a lidded box that I could spend a couple of hours on at the lathe. Yours popped up and was just the project I was looking for. Great progressive tutorial video that is very instructive. Thumbs up!
Hi Mike, I have to say that wood turners are the greatest group of people what an mazing gift and it couldn't have gone to a more deserving turner. I get offers and never know how to respond. You box turned out amazing all the way through to the last detail.Take care Happy turning.
Another fantastic video and box. You are a great woodturner and I do enjoy watching your videos. Keep making your great videos and turning. It's been a bit of time since I've said anything. Guess I'd better get back into the thick of things.
Careful guys, you'll give Mike a big head and make him think he's a wood turner with all of this lavish praise. Oh wait...he's already there. Dare I say it, the best I've ever seen Mike. Well done, as usual.
Very nice little box. We used to call them off cut boxes as they are a great way of making something nice from little offcuts . The box under my bench is full of useable offcuts just waiting to be made into delightful little boxes like this.
Quite nice. Have you done a video on Yorkshire Grit and Hampshire Sheen? I'd like to know more about the product and if it is available in the US. Thanks.
Cool project Mike . That's and awesome gift Dennis sent you . If you read this Dennis I can send my address to . I live in Canada so the shipping will be cheaper lol. Cheers Mike take care .
Beautiful Piece and nice looking Queen Ebony, from an awesome man Les Barker from OZ. Well done and a beautiful video Mike I really liked the shots and the pace as well as the great lighting you have! Nice work Mate!
How did you permanently attach the knob to the lid? I see in the video that you use hot glue to temporarily attach it for turning, but I never saw you do the final permanent attachment.
Hi Mike. Love the videos. I am starting off in woodturning and have a question. I was given a new Robert Sorby flat nosed scraper as a gift. It is plenty sharp, but I cannot seem to get the technique. I have tried using it on both flat and curved surfaces to no avail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers. Joel
+Joel Whitney Hi Joel, and thank you Try lifting the handle above the horizontal, with very little pressure.... start at a slow speed to see where you get the "sweet" spot. If you still get problems PM me. Cheers Mike
Mike Waldt ok. I'll give that a try. I attempted to use it on a couple different surfaces (spindle face, inside a bowl). Is there a specific surface it is designed for, or is it versatile like a skew?
+Joel Whitney The square end scraper is most effective on convex surfaces like the outside of a bowl, but can also be used to make mortices and the like. Cheers Mike
great video Mike and a great design on the box !!! i really love to work with ebony i make finials for my micro hollow forms !!! and the idea with tooth brash ha ha hahah amazing !!!!
Hi Mike. A lovely piece and I think the beading works very well. I was visited by a fellow turner last week who wanted a closer look at my Axminster AT1628vs. He very kindly gave me a lovely piece of spalted beech and I've been thinking of what to make with it. Your video has inspired me to have a go at my first lidded box. All I need now is a piece of ebony. Thanks for the video. Happy and safe turning. Cheers. Andrew
What a great gift from a subscriber mate !! and as we say around here "lovely old job" it couldn't have gone to a nicer bloke!!! Great job on the little box Mike and just love the ebony knob. Well, what else is there to say 'cept Lovely old job :) Take care mate, Bram.
Hi Mike To say Exquisite! is a under statement You make it look so easy new to wood-turning but have hopes best of all. by the way who makes the little sander? keep up the Beautiful work and be safe
+cockatoobirdman bill Hi Bill, and thank you for your kind words. The sander is the Hope Pro Sander, from Simon Hope, and really is a superb piece of kit. Cheers Mike
The generosity of some people really is truly amazing, I'm sure you were quite blown away when you opened the parcel. It is so nice to see you doing a box for a change which came out really well. So nice to see Oak being used which I rarely see on here. Well done Mike a really nice video and a great job on the box.
Wow, wow and treble wow!…beautiful turned box, fantastic gifts from Denis (turners are family for sure) and great video yet again....keep them coming my friend 👍🏼😊
You sir are definitely a masterful turner. I'm a new subscriber, and turner. I can't wait to try some of the stuff I've seen you do. That oak had a beautiful grain, and you can't go wrong with ebony or black wood . Thanks for sharing. Now I have to quit binge watching and get to the shop.
Many thanks Mike for the video. What an absolutely beautiful piece - you've got the grain and pattern of the wood to come out so effectively. It has a lovely contemporary look too - really nice!
+Vaughan Paterson Hi Vaughn, thank you very much mate, really appreciate you watching and commenting. Have i already asked you, are you making UKIWS this year? Cheers Mike
Its a lovely piece of oak and you have crafted it into a fine box. How long did it take you to part the box off, parting always seems to take me a long time, maybe I need a diamond parting tool? thanks Mike James
Thank you James, I appreciate that mate. Parting off shouldn't take long, but also shouldn't be rushed either, as you can not only scorch the wood (which I do when I'm rushing), but leave a very bad surface. As long as you either "wiggle" the tool while parting off, or make a small relief cut, all should go smoothly, and quite quickly :) Take care Mike
Greetings Mike, I am new to wood turning and luckily found your channel. Your wood turning skill and presentation are outstanding and will help me in my quest to be more knowledgeable about turning.
Thank you for the inspiration. I have now turned several boxes with great success. Thank also for the great instructions you give. Turn on and keep making the videos.
Great video and a beautiful box. I love how you show your work flow, it makes it seem very smooth and effortless (obviously honed through many hours of turning). Also love the effect of the beads. might have to look into tha that tool. Cheers
Thank you Mike! Perfect timing. I am working on a similar box right now for my daughter's wedding and this is just what I needed to see to give me some ideas! Nicely done.
Hello Mike. I am new to wood turning and completely enjoy your channel. Thank you for your explanations and clear details. My wife and I are planning a trip to the UK in the next few years and i hope to send some of your exotics back home. Keep the videos coming....Thank You Sir.
Hi Steve, and many thanks for your kind words and support, I really do appreciate them. Maybe we can meet for a drink if you're near to where I live when you visit the UK. Take care Mike
