Finished with:
Minwax Sanding Sealer
Minwax Polycrylic
Acks Sanding Paste and Acks Polish/Restoring Paste
Tools used:
Bowl Gouges
Carbide hollowing tools
Negative rake scrapers

I thought it was a pot pourri container, as soon as I saw the gift had to be some kind of lid. It was confirmed, to me, when you said you weren't finishing the inside...and such a gracious gift from Joseph, knowing how special hummingbirds are to you! That is one of the most lovely pot pourri lids I have ever seen! Overall, with the container, a delightful creation! Thank you for sharing this piece with us!

Great guess Gil! So I was thinking this was going to be a very simple turning. Ha! that wood was so hard I could hardly believe it. I do have a face plate on something that promises to be hard. Maybe it will turn out easy LOL I put the fact place on it 2 months ago and then decided to let it sit a bit longer while I thought about it. Thanks for watching, Gary

I like turning black locust, but recently I had a dead locust fall across a fence. I salvaged all I could that looked like it could be turned. When I put it on the lathe ants and grubs flew all over me. The wood was like trying to turn concrete! Black locust is beautiful wood, but don't let it dry!

Very kind of Joseph to send you the beautiful lid! Wow! The finish you got on that piece is magnificent! I simply must remember to pick up some of the Minwax water based products. Thanks Phil and I think I learned the trick for keeping a secret when I was a kid. One of my sisters had gotten me a coat when I was a kid. My mother was so excited she said...Hurry up and open your coat! I past the story on to our kids and they are always kidding with their kids saying the same thing. LOL It is a good memory. Yes the Polycrylic really does work great and simple as it looks to put on. You will have not problems because I put it on just like you do your shellac. Not meant for everything and you can leave it satin by just using your scotch brite pads. Thanks for watching and take care my friend, Gary

Thank you Vickie and I think more wood turners would love the water based if they tried. I first used it on a table I made our younger son and it has held up good now for years. Thank you Billy, I just checked and you can get them at www.pennstateind.com/ Just search for lid pewter and they will popup. And I bet you will be able to make some very nice ones. JUST DONT USE BLACK LOCUST LOL It was very hard wood and any wood will work and look great. Take care, Gary

Thank you very much Tanya. Yes it was very kind of him to send the lids and I really enjoyed making the potpourri bowl for. I wanted to use something that would not take away from the lid but still look good under it. The Black Locust did not let me done. I am still amazed at the beauty in the wood. I appreciate you watching and commenting. I also notice you have a channel and watched your video on the Olive Wood give away. Very beautiful bowl. I just subscribed as well. Take care, Gary

Thank You Gary....I could not guess what you were doing (i love a mystery). Black Locust is Neat-o stuff! "feels like Marble", and it sure looks like Marble (i need to find some of that stuff for future projects). Another fun video Gary that I did not know until you put the lid on it. Until next Friday morning....TM
