Welcome to Wood Turning with John Herega. Today he is teaching us how to turn a vase. John starts by mounting a 50 millimeter chuck on the lathe. For our wood piece, he suggests finding one as square as possible for better gripping. With the piece of wood secured in the lathe, he turns up the speed and rounds it off until it’s roughly the shape of a vase. He shows the proper cutting technique, which is to turn your wrist and push slightly forward.
Next, John determines what size hole to drill, and how deep the hole should go. After drilling, he offers a tip on how to silence a squeaky drill: get a little bit of wax and put it on the drill bit when warm. Next, he places the tool rest on the mouth to smooth out the top. With the mouth smooth, it’s time to sand; 600 to 700 RPM is the perfect speed to set the lathe when sanding. John sands both inside and out.
Next up, he applies the dye. John uses a light red mahogany dye. With a sponge brush, he applies the dye liberally. You don’t want to turn the lathe on for the dying process, hand turn only. When dry, John sands very lightly and applies a second coat. The last thing to do is cut the piece off. With the lathe turned on, John pushes in with his tool all the way until the vase comes off. Clean the bottom up, apply dye, and your vase is complete!
