Welcome to Wood Turning with John Herega. Today, John is teaching us how to make wine toppers. The first step is to find the center on the piece of wood. Using an 11/32 drill bit, John then drills a 3/4 inch deep hole in the center. He then moves to the lathe. Using an adapter, he connects the piece to the lathe and fires it up. The first thing John does on the lathe is make the piece round. Next, using a diamond parting tool, he carefully creates a hat band. After finishing off the top of the hat band he tapers it down, parts off part of the piece, then moves his tool rest to the front and forms a crown on top of the hat. He turns the lathe down to 700 RPM and sands the piece smooth.
For his finish, John uses friction polish. He recommends that you never use a rag for applying finishes; only use paper towels. This is because you don’t want a piece of string to pull in the lathe. He applies the first coat of friction polish without the lathe turned on. Once coated, he turns on the lathe and, using his paper towel, lets the friction polish the wood to a beautiful shine. Finally, it’s time to assemble. He takes his finished piece of wood, screws a metal wine topper into the drilled hole, and the wine topper is complete.
