When you are removing the glue block, soak the hot melt glue with isopropyl alcohol for a few minutes. It deserves the glue and makes it really easy to remove the block. Nice work my friend. Beautiful bowl. I like the spalting and wormholes.

Wormy oak like that is hard to find. And that bowl is a excellent example on how beautiful it can be. A very artistic display of it also. Great work sir.

Thanks Charlie I appreciate it!😎 Yep just every once in a while can get ahold of some of that stuff, if it was stained a dark color it could pass for the wormy chestnut.

Good morning, Kimsey. Certainly a gorgeous piece of wood. Your glue block was a good choice for maximizing the depth of your bowl. I did get a little concerned after a few of the catches but it held nicely. I also use denatured alcohol to soften and remove hot glue. The story of the thin bottom and your use of resin to help strengthen it was a great idea and surely took a lot of time. The final results gave you a stunning oak bowl. Striking bowl pictures at the end. Looking up yields wonderful views. Being quick to record these allows you and others to enjoy them again. Thank you for this video.

Howdy Ray thanks I appreciate it! I was a little worried about the glue block giving way too, I always dread getting the resin out but sometimes ya just gotta, i thought I took a picture or two of the process and a short video of the mess I made but somehow I couldn’t find where I did but I could have just been contemplating on it and thought i did anyway couldn’t find the clips of it, i don’t know what I’m doing sometimes 😄 Anyway Glad you enjoyed the video 😎 I’ll be keeping my eyes open for some more cool clouds and stuff in the sky, that was a strange happening that rainbow the way it was, Have a good one buddy 🤝

Those look like powder post beetle holes. They love red oak. So do carpenter ants. And if I think about termites love it too. Great piece!

It wasn’t powder post beetles 🪲 I know what those are, they leave trails of dust in the holes and the only dust was in the holes were from my sanding dust, yep lots of critters do like eating on the woods though for sure 👍 Glad ya liked it! 😎 was a fun project have a good one 🤝

Howdy Gary Thanks I appreciate it glad you like it!😎 was some pretty cool grain, probably if ya could stain that stuff the correct color I was thinking it would almost look like the wormy chestnut 🌰 That creek used to have quite a few trout in it, It definitely is some fun fishing creeks I always seem to fall in totally most times I’ve been creek fishing Lol dern rocks are slippery ☝️ 😅

Thanks Phil I appreciate it!😎 I’m glad i didn’t go through the bottom I would’ve been sick for awhile Lol 😄 was close so close, looking through one of those worm 🐛 holes looked maybe just a 1/16 this were i got a little too aggressive with sanding 😣 it’s just a matter of time before I do go through the bottom of one, it does happen here and there 😩😅 Glad ya enjoyed the video!😎

I just turned a piece of wormy oak, not that big, but it was a crotch piece. It turned out pretty good, too. When you got those catches, I was trying to tell you that its not you, it's that old oak tree. Oak can be a bit surly, and every once in a while, those worm trails, or just the loose grain, seems to line up and grab that chisel. Same thing happened to me last week. Good advice with the wax on the worm screw. I finished mine with Howard's, because thats just what I know and I like how it feels. Thanks for sharing. 👍

Thanks for the info on the chisel catching I appreciate it!😎 I turned a piece of poplar one time to that kept catching really bad, had me cringing 😬 about ripped the chisel out of my hands and i was thinking what da heck is going on 🤨, it was a cut off where a limb was and had worm holes in it, it had me second guessing that I was willing to keep turning it but I managed to get it finished, I bet that piece ya did was a Beauty especially being a crotch piece, really cool grain mostly in where the limbs form, I’ve gotta try that Howard finish I’ve yet to try it out, glad ya enjoyed the video Have a good one 🤝

hey, denatured alcohol works really great for loosening up the glue from a glue gun really well. just rub a bit on the glue with a rag and let it sit for a minute. It will work!

Thanks Kimsey. I just turned matching old Oak crotch pieces; extremely hard and once in the middle encountered worm holes. On on I was able to sand with water based varnish and most of the holes were filled in with the dust/varnish emulsion. Used Watco Danish oil and it looks good. The other one is more problematic since I have a couple exposed longitudinal worm holes. They will be Oak Advent wreaths so want the top not to distract from the candles during Christmas. Any ideas? I may try epoxy mixed with fine sawdust, colored resin would seem to be a distraction ,but will let my daughter decide. Good seeing another one of your videos.

Howdy Lee! I bet are Beautiful 😎 especially being crotch pieces, epoxy mixed with fine sawdust works pretty good I’ve did that a time or two, also just lately I put ca glue the thick kind then some fine walnut dust in the cracks in some ambrosia maple and all I had was the thick ca glue and I put more ca on the line of the dust and put a glove on and mashed it in till the dust soaked it up then sprayed with the activator, matched the grains on it pretty, only thing popped into my thoughts, I’ve noticed seems like when color is used on resin it seems to speed up the drying process, have you ever had that happen? Glad you enjoyed the video 😊

Denatured alcohol should soften the glue enough to peal it off without leaving a mess.

I have yet never turned a piece of oak of any species because I'm not a fan of open grain. That piece though is the difference between turning a piece or burning a piece. You did good with capturing the nature in it. Awesome work and happy turning my friend 😊
@kimseyjustkimsey5256
@kimseyjustkimsey5256 Месяц назад
Thanks Edward I appreciate it buddy! And Happy turning to you also 😎 It is definitely an open grain, ya might some day down the road come by a piece with some cool grain in it and have to try it sometime, that might help ya like it a little better 😄 Quarter sawn oak is some pretty cool stuff, When the log is sawed through the mill if the growth rings are turned a certain way when it is cut there’s some Amazing grain that shows up good.

@@kimseyjustkimsey5256 most of the stuff I've been working with is Black Walnut and Butternut because I'm obsessed with those two species. But right now I'm going to have to have the motor of my Lathe rebuilt before I can get back to turning. I just love to turn pieces where two or more limbs come together and I do have a few Oak crotch pieces that I have been wanting to get done. Maybe after I get my Lathe fixed that's what I'll do. Have a great holiday weekend.
