My website: woodspirit.net/
Link to tools I use: woodspirit.net... I used a piece of basswood 14" long by 8" wide and 4" deep in this carving. I used only hand tools.
I used the book "Carving the Human Face: Capturing Character and Expression in Wood" by Jeff Phares for Woodcarving Illustrated to guide me through this project.
Music:
"Thunderhead" and "Birch Run" both by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)

Great job , I've done one as well , my dad has done about a dozen , I loved the book as well great resource. Keep up the good work , remember it's not a mistake, it's a design change. It's just a piece of firewood until it's done. Happy carving

I remember doing that project myself years ago out of that same book. I think yours came out better than the one I tried Mark. Great Job!

Thanks Kevin! I like doing projects like this one. Even if I never carve one like it again, I learn from it.

Would you include painting ideas for your carvings? I'd like to know how to thin stains to use on unpainted areas of my carvings to give it an antique look. Thank you.

I really like this, I'm wanting to try something different instead of woodspirits so I can have some different content on my channel. Thanks for the inspiration and that book looks quite good that you used. Cheers Tim from Wood 4 Nothing

Not sure that the pattern of the book is the reason, but the face needs higher cheek bones to be a native American.

The book is good. I think it would be good to start with general wood spirits. There are plenty of free tutorials online. Good luck and have fun!

+DIY AtoZ I used boiled linseed oil as the base.

@@IdRatherMakeItMyself-Net in India it isn't available.. I have Raw linseed oil. Can I boil it and than use it?
@IdRatherMakeItMyself-Net
@IdRatherMakeItMyself-Net 5 лет назад
@@DIYAtoZ no. It is called boiled but it has some chemical driers added to it to make it dry faster. Tung oil would work or really any other oil finish that will dry. Things like mineral oil won't ever dry. Hopefully you can find something that would work.

Hi Mark,could you please write list of all tools which you have and specially you used on this project.Thanks
@IdRatherMakeItMyself-Net
@IdRatherMakeItMyself-Net 4 года назад
I can't remember all the tools I used but here's what I usually use for something like this: 25 mm gouges - #3, #5, #7, #9 15 mm Fishtail gouges - #3, #5, #7 Large and Medium V gouges Some Smaller "U" gouges - maybe 3 to 5 mm Also, some #1 gouges various sizes - probably 15mm and like an 8mm I like using the longer, full-size gouges for roughing out and then a combination of longer and medium sized gouges for the final details. I will even use a set of palm gouges for some of the work. Some of those will have really tiny veiners, v-gouges, and other sweeps. Like clamps you can never have enough. :)
