I've seen people carve with knives, chisels, dremels, axes, chainsaws, but i never thought of a bandsaw. Seems you do it all and any sort of size or subject or material. I'm 66 and wanted some passion to fill the missing creativity and adventure my spirit and life had once had but lost and now craves to return. I've been living in social security hell and no one will hire an elder man much less let him do something interesting. So I've just ordered some beginner tools, gloves and basic wood to start on in my tiny public housing apartment. I've subscribed to RU-vid channels good for me to learn from, small figures to learn basics from. I admit I'll never be you for what you know is vast as those Viking seas beyond me and I might in a year be a solo swallow landing on you workshop roof to see the thing you are doing. My great respect for you craft and skills.
Thks for your support yes a band saw saves a lot of time during roughing process but takes some practice best whishes on your new journey take your time in beginning over time you will pick up speed try to better yourself with each pc etc.
@@Woodcarving_Master I understand. I've learned many different things so far and patience, observation and mentors are good. Golf is the only one I couldn't master. You are one of my instructors so I should be fine with time. You're inspiring I know you know. Thank you.
Absolutely stunning! You are a master at your craft! Thank you for posting this! Blessings, Health, Prosperity, and Peace to you and yours and to all who read this! 👍😘😇💖
Oh my gosh Christopher your such a gifted soul , I’m sure that Viking is saving you a place of honor in Valhalla . Can’t wait to see more of your talent thanks for sharing . May you carve out a long blessed life .👍😇🇺🇸
Im new to wood carving and 64, so don't think I have time to get to this level lol... incredible work, learnt so much watching you carve, thanks for sharing , Subscribed ... Cheers
At first I thought oh no! He is putting horns on the helmet.Nooooo! But then it became wings.much better.the wood you used looked creamy& waxy.lovin your work.
Thks for your support.🙏..yes historicaly..the horns on helmuts were not very authentic...either had nothing at all or maybe a chieften or high rank had the wings...plus from artistic perspective wings add a nice decorative look Native black cherry is wood hard but carves crisp with sharp tools one of my favorite woods
Love the Viking I did I am 5 foot tall telephone pole with a Viking head on top that island girl on RU-vid Park from me because she is a Viking queen great work keep it up
Wow yes few use the Capital M...its funny since I have been on internet for 20 years I met 2 others with the same first and last name one ironically has the same birthday but 2 years younger and also has the capital M and another in same state of CT but does not have capital M and now you so we all are Probably distant relatives from what I understand the First LaMontagnes immigrated from France to Canada in early 1800s..my great grand father came down to USA from canada probably turn of century 1900..its interesting there is still a good concentration of them in Quebec etc.
WOW 😳 I could look at this for hrs very well done thank you for freeing that Viking from that block and taking us along with you on this Journey and now you have a very fine peace that I’m sure would look amazing around the hearth
Stunning work Chris truly awesome looking piece brother. The Tung oil really makes the grain pop yet still looks very natural. Great art dude & thanks for sharing
Sir, I have never witnessed such talent. I was so amazed by your talent. I actually cut a piece of wood and spent the day working on it… it’ll take me many hours to learn but I’m so inspired by you. Thank you for sharing your amazing skills. Sincerely, Tammy McDonald
What a Great video Brother! Thanks for sharing the full footage of chisel carving, that would really helps and a great inspiration. Keep up the great work #ChristopherLaMontagne
You are so amazing. Great!!! My full respect!!! I am a bloody Rookie in carving. So i hope i can learn from your fantastic Videos. Many ( respectfully) greetings from germany/ Bavaria
Thanks for your support 🙏 much appreciated you live in a part of the world where there are lots of good carving I have many videos and try to add new ones often as I can next one you will see is wood carving of a moose working on it now
Thanks, Christopher nice work. I have been wanting to carve cherry. But was worried it would be too hard. I had looked up the janka hardness a while back and it was something like 2,300. That was brazilian cherry. I did not realize that black cherry had a janka hardness of only 950. That explains the carving that have been able to been done on Chippendale furniture. I'ts time to give black cherry a go a carving.
Thks for your support I never let the hardness of wood stop me from carving anything you just have to plan for it tool angles apply a lot of elbow grease and do dilligence etc.
Chris your talent is extraordinary! You have a great eye for design. I have heard it said that most artists when making the human face tend to make it look like themselves without even meaning to. This Viking if you look at his eyes, nose, shape of the face, looks like you. The wood spirit you did that was a whole tree also looked like you. Nothing wrong, just interesting. The bottom line Chris is that you are an incredibly talented man with no calves, lol
That's funny🤣 ..I may add a few features on pcs that may resemble my own unless I am doing a portrait of a particular person like MR Rogers etc But I never make the calves small 🤣
amazing work!! verry impressed mr LAMONTAGNE!! do think the video could do without the music.. just leave your toolsounds/background noice and its fine! less work for you and more enjoyment for those watching ;) keep it up and thank you for sharing!!
This video popped up on my up next tonight on my tv and I watched every second of it, I have been hearing my pal just carve rob giving you shout outs, I thought I was subscribed to your chnl years back, But anyways now subbed, You are a true master at wood carving and one could only wish to be as good as you, How many hours did this piece take (if you don't mind) And would you mind me referring this video on one of mine (shout out) I think there is alot to learn watching it, well I learnt alot, Thank you
Thks Sure can refer to any of my videos any time no need to ask and shout outs appreciated anytime thks for your support much appreciated🙏 have been subscribed to your channel for a whole your presentation is very entertaining and do enjoy when you visit with other carvers etc.I am on east coast USA. in CT..so don't always get to connect with carvers on west coast etc.
I also had subscribed to your channel while back...and just ressubscribed...you tube plays games I think and cancels out subscribers...to curb our monetization revenue..they are corrupt unfortunately etc.
Awesome thank yoy Chris, It may be a bit before I shout out but I'll try my hand at a viking and it (WONT LOOK AS AWESOME AS YOURS) but it will be a reference from your video
What did you do with that beautiful carving? Was it a commission? Did you sell it or did you give it away or did you just keep it for yourself? Great work! Love it!
I have a large collection of makes I am not brand loyal to any make but my top 2 of choice would be addis.and .pfiel I go more by the shapes of the tools themselves.... its more how you use a tool as opposed to brand or make A good carver can do more with a shitty tool Than a shitty carver with superior tools....
No as of yet but I can carve anything so when customer comes along that wants one I will..etc Or intil I have time to do one on speculation etc.. Paying customers are first priority etc.
@@Woodcarving_Master I made more my works from maple, valnuts, bubinga, ebony ... I have never tried black cherry - I see it is shiny looks like with high oil contents but tung oil taking very well. Thanks for responding.
Fan-fkn-tastic!....... Your work is pure brilliance Sir. Thanx for showing us this piece an absolute delight to watch... Thank you. Isn't it strange that you have way fewer subs and likes than some fuckwit Celeb with as much talent as a fence post....... oh yeah, I forgot....we live in Hell......still, guys like you inspire the real people whilst the NPC's entertain the "Morons"...... and I mean "Morons" in the nicest possible way of course.
Bendiciones para ti, soy tu nuevo suscriptor y amigo, tus habilidades son divinas, una pregunta, que madera ocupas? , saludos desde tlaxcala, México 🙋🏻♂️
A tree-like statue is a good expression. You're working delicately, and you think it's good, what kind of tree is it? I'm going to see and learn. 👍 good
It's art does not have to be my client is happy with it I know the horns were not accurate on the helmets but they look cool...for art sake and so don't the wings for Art sake like lot of Art not every early painting is 100% depiction of viking costume there are no photographs of living vikings in costume only some artifacts so it does not matter its Art and was not made for you so if break open your piggy bank maybe someone will make one to your spec
As a native/indigenous person it is very offensive when Euro blooded folks make comments saying that either the Vikings or the mass murderer/rapist Christopher Columbus discovered Amerikkka. We natives have been on this soil for many millennia. Historians are incorrect to say that because we were already here. We native people have suffered greatly from European colonization and erasure attempts. Yet, we are still here. Know the real history!
Your right you were..but dont take it out of context What was meant was the vikings discovered it existed for themselves as it was new to them... Not that they were the first there of course natives were there first... I Have native american heritage and I am not offended and niether should you.. It's same as saying I discovered Ice cream for first time cuz you have never eaten it before...does not mean you invented it just means first time experiance for that person or people. Don't misunderstand context then call it an insult etc.
@@Woodcarving_Master I am not taking what you said out of context. I am explaining to you that as a native to these lands the very mention of “invaders” most notably Christopher Columbus is offensive. Were not talking about ice cream or discovering something shinny and new, were talking about stolen land, broken treaties and attempted genocide of my people. If you in fact have native heritage that is of any worth to you, im asking you to think of this next time. Of course, you can do as you wish. I am a native wood carver in a white dominated industry. I see the lack of cosideration for us. Maybe because we don’t have a large enough voice and i hope to change that. You are an amzing artist and thats a fact. This is a simple message to you that my people are still fighting from north to south and we are fighting for our land, for our water, for the right to exsist. There were many other cultures that came before Europeans such as African cultures who never claimed to discover anything because we were already here. In this context, the word “discovered” is incorrect. Take care
Gifted? Sure. But you perpetuate the stereo-type. Vikings neither wore wings or horns on their helmets. K? It's annoying. Especially to people of Norwegian heritage such as myself. Do your history homework.
It's art...my Art! and the customer was very happy with it thats what matters ..not you or what you think!...I have artist license to portray and glorify as I see fit ...there is no rule anywhere that says I can stylize a viking headress in a cool way...I have norwegian heritage as well and not offended by it and niether should you dippy!! I AGREE that not every grunt viking had a fancy Helmut but a significant king or chieftain very well could of of course it would be rotted away after being buried for 1000 plus years...but there's no photographs from the period I feel bad for an uptight moran like you..its art for art sake not historic accuracy sake
