I happened across one of your videos with no prior interest in whittling. Now I'm subscribed to your page and have purchased whittling knives and wood. I'm so obsessed that I stayed up until 4:00 am whittling a wooden spoon. It looks TERRIBLE! You make it look so easy. Thank you for all the videos. I really enjoy watching them. My husband wont let me watch them anymore when he's in the room because it's all I watch. Lol

You shouldn’t say your whittling is not art. It may not be Monet or MichaelAngelo, but it IS artistic, nonetheless. Don’t know what it is about your whittling, but it’s very therapeutic. And they look so great. Thank you for sharing.

Hi, Your videos are wonderful and i have been watching a lot of them. Until now i have off and on "tried" carving. Now that i have watched your tutorials I have more confidence, understand it so much more. I carved a little apple, mushroom, man with a mustache and beard. I also carved a dog of my own design. I'm a part time art teacher K-8th grades and I create all kinds of art. I wanted to learn to carve for myself and I have always loved wood! So I'm so happy to have found your channel I'm 57 so I consider myself "old School", lol. I agree when you said let's get this younger generation learning the art of whittling and carving get them off their screens 24/7. Thank you very much for your time and channel!

Hi Doug im an old critter 82 just started whittling i started with your little man iv now attempted eight id only show four the others didnt turn out to good, i have a lot of Arthritis in my hands and iv found cutting my wood all six or seven inches long ,i mark out the top three or four inches the rest is like a handle when iv jut about finished carving i cut of the bottom spare inches. i hope this helps others who struggle with small objects,thanks for the videos

hey since you need a handle.. I have been thinking about getting some 2x2 framing strips and making the characters as a walking stick top. this might be something that you also want to do.

Hi Doug. I am a 74 year old lady and I have been watching your vids for about a month now along with My Self Reliance and Joe Robinet. I am hooked on your camping/canoeing trips and also your carvings vids. I know that you say that you are not a teacher but I have to say that you are. I have gotten more out of your videos on carving than I have gotten out of Gene's teaching videos and I suppose it has alot to do with personalities and different teaching styles. I appreciate your quiet way and am inspired to try to carve a little guy or gal of my own soon. Thanks for sharing so much of your life and loves.

IMHO the best beginner character whittle on RU-vid! A great project for us beginners to gain confidence and to use as a jumping-off point for our own creations. Copy Doug's and then make your own characters- tall ones, short ones, play with hats, beards, mittens, hands, props, etc... Even if you screw up keep on going- you never know what neat little creation will be the result of a happy accident!

Hi, Doug. It's so calm sitting here on a rainy day just watching you carve a new little guy. As an art teacher and lifelong artist, I"m saying that what you do IS art. Some have commented about that and I agree with them. Each of your little men has his own personality and style. I've worked a lot with clay, but never worked with carving, so it's very satisfying to watch your original creations emerge from the wood. Oh, you or your viewers might try Hobby Lobby for what I call "Dollhouse Lumber". They have all sorts of sizes and thicknesses and I think they have the size you use in both basswood and balsa. I'll sit back now and listen to the rain and your talking to us about your carving. Such a nice way to spend the hours. Take care. :0) Donna B.

I absolutely love those hillbilly characters! I'm following along but noticed how much better yours looks with the scalloping, vs me trying to make the character smooth. My wood was a bit taller too but I scaled it up to help it not look lanky. I still prefer yours being shorter though. I now see that I could've gotten 6 pieces (your size) vs the 4 I would've gotten from the block of basswood. I got 5 pieces because I caught on after cutting half of the block in half, getting 2-5" pieces, then cutting the last half into 3rds. Those will be perfect and I'm anxious to make more. So far, so good and it's sincerely all because of you. Thank you!

Doug, I highly reccomend a .22 air rifle and sitting, quietly tackling invasive pest species of vermin out in the woods for those days where you just want to get some good down time. I find the carving fills the gaps where there is natural wildlife to appreciate, and otherwise fill the gap between gathering fire/carving wood and getting a nice heap of coals ready for the spit roast. Unless your vegetarian of course, in which sorry for the mental horror show!!

I too first looked to Gene messler when I got in to carving, and a bastardised version of his 5 minute bear done on some gnarly pine that came from an old wine rack was my first ever carve a few years back... "And just remove that wood"! I really enjoy your vids, and stumbled upon your sycamore sam video a year or two back,, and I have a sycamore tree out front still yet I haven't plucked up the guts to bastardise Sam yet. I have an abundance of bass blocks that my wife bought me for christmas, so after I give this one a try tonight, and if I am successful I shall finally give one a crack in sycamore later this week. Thanks for the inspiration and motivation you have passed along.

thanks Chris -stick with the Basswood - that Sycamore is not Basswood haha
@cmwontner
@cmwontner 7 лет назад
haha, right you are about the difference. I have carved a pretty fine owl and fox in sycamore, both turned out pretty sweet considering all I had at the time was a mora HD and a swiss army knife. They are two of my earliest carvings, (no. 2 and 3 after my pine bear). I started a carving in olive about 6months back which I was kindly gifted from a log pile in greece and smuggled back in my suitcase, it is slowly coming along as a dog for my friend Makis who lives in Zakynthos - Now that certainly is tough going but such a beatiful shiny smooth fininsh and seemless grain. Apple too was quite a joy to carve, until it split down the centre mid carve overnight on me, but I think the fairly young tree was too young and dried out too quickly. My hillbilly is complete, nose only, beany hat akin to Sam's and carved from approx 1 inch (just off square, by approx 4 inch, so a fairly lanky and kinda minature.....Again thank you, good sir for the fresh pointers and all your good work! keep up the inspiration!

Great job and you made it look so easy. I watched Sharon's videos first and was able to understand what cuts you were making. Don't sell yourself short - your video was as much if not more helpful than the rest.
