Making a holiday star. Basic tools you need is a miter saw, table saw, glue, two way tape and painter's tape. A pin nailer would be nice. Of course you might want to paint it too. You cut all the pieces the same.

Ive watched a few videos with the angles you need to jig up, its beyond me n the mitre saw, i tried a different one n couldn't that had a 56 cut. But you make it look so much eaiser, and show how to cut the pieces better, with adding the tape and wee blocks, you shiw it way better. I didnt know to put the stop blocks down with the blade fully down either. Thank you your video is awesome.

Another fun build. This is a quick build for the holidays. I make these as decoration gifts. People love them. The angles are really important here, if you are off slightly it multiplies because you have 10 pieces. I made all the pieces the same so you don't have to mess with different size pieces. You can make different size stars just by changing the lengths. The angles are the same no matter what length size of the pieces you do.
@jshandcrafted6940
@jshandcrafted6940 4 года назад
Michael Tretina how wide across are these stars you made? Great video by the way!
@michaeltretina
@michaeltretina 4 года назад
@@jshandcrafted6940 Thanks for watching. The stars are 1.75" deep and 11.5" across. Each leg is 4.75" long. You can change the star size by changing the length of the leg but the angles will be the same. It becomes difficult when you go below 1.75" on the leg length. Making them bigger is definitely easier. Good luck and let me know how you make out.

May I ask how many piece 36, 27, and 45 degree Pieces to build a star?
@michaeltretina
@michaeltretina 6 дней назад
You need 10 pcs (5 point star, each point has 2 sides, 2 x 5=10) that are the same size. Every piece should have one side with a 36-degree angle, and the other side of every piece should have a 72-degree angle. You can cut the 36-degree angle easily by setting the miter saw to 36degree. The 72-degree angle is tricky. You cut a 45-degree piece of wood that displaces the miter saw then set the saw to 27 degrees. 45 + 27=72 Watch the video, it's explained there. The length of pieces determines the size of the star. They should all be the same length and have the same two angles. Good luck, and if you get stuck, reach out again

@@michaeltretina: OK, I got it. But just want to make sure that the Angel is one side is 72 degree, and the other one is 18 degree, or one side 72 degree, another side is 36 degree? Because I use circular saw to cut it, so I need to use the protractor to measure the angel.
@michaeltretina
@michaeltretina 3 дня назад
One side of every piece should have 72 degree angle and one side of every piece should have 36 degree angle. Check the video for orientation. Miter saw can't cut 72 degree angle, that is why I cut a piece of sacrificial wood at 45 degree and added 27 degrees to it. Totalling a 72 degree angle. There are different ways to do this. I just figured that having all the same angles was easiest. Good luck.

In order to easily glue-up the pieces to form the star, ACCURATE angles are essential. In order to be able to cut the angles accurately, I made two templates consisting of one at 72 degrees from the saw’s fence (which results in an effective 18 degrees blade displacement of 18 degrees). The template consisted of a board and a 90 degree aluminium profile which is used as a fence when cutting the angles of the pieces. In the video, a piece of wood is cut at 45 degrees and used as a fence, and the blade is set at 27 degrees, which results in the necessary angles of 45 + 27 = 72 degrees. I think that the template probably facilitates more accurate and easier cutting. Similarly, a second template is used for the 36 degree cut for better, easier, and more accurate angles.

Un pregunta las medidas d elos ángulos serían 36 " grados y el otro sería??
@michaeltretina
@michaeltretina 10 месяцев назад
Ok. You cut a piece of scrap board at 45 degrees then you reset the blade to 27 degrees. Fasten the 45 degree board to the saw and cut that angle. My saw cannot cut the angle effectively so I do this. The angle you are looking for is 72 degrees. 72 ×5 (points on the star)=360. Hope this helps. Reach out if you get stuck.
@glorisnoris9897
@glorisnoris9897 4 месяца назад
there are two ways to do the star --one is the way he did it pointy those angles are 36/and 18 for the pointy side like he said 45+27=72 or 90 -72=18 and the other way is 36 degrees again and the pointy side 54.

I always have gap issues when putting together.. any thoughts.. my cut are 72 and 36 I am baffled as to why I don't get cleaner cuts.. are you using a special blade??
@michaeltretina
@michaeltretina 2 года назад
No special blade. Actually the blade is kind of crappy. Most likely your saw is off a half or even a quarter degree. When you multiply it by the ten angles, it adds up. Try checking if your saw is correct, the fence my have been knocked out of calibration. If not, try adding or subtracting a quarter degree in your cuts. All the angles should be 72 and 36. Good luck and let me know how you make out.

Hi Thom. Michael is correct about the potential for the saw to be off a degree or so. I always use a machinist square or a calibrated angle finer to verify the 36 or 72 degrees mark

@@michaeltretina yes five points but instead of doing it how you did in this video each outside edge of the five pointed star will be cut at 18 degrees especially making up 36 degrees when you join the five pieces together, all that needs to be done after that is finding the inside angles cutting them out to join all the pieces together slap some glue and paint on and your finished.
