Join me as I discover a secret woodland filled with Bluebells in full spring bloom. Awash with colour the bluebell woods made for a perfect opportunity for some woodland macro photography with my trusty Pentax K1 and the 100mm Macro lens and his new friend the Samyang 135mm f2.0 which allowed me to capture the various blue hues and colours of this renowned little woodland flower.
Steeped in folklore and tradition (Bluebells) this bluebell wood is nestled in the heart of Worcestershire. After a short hike off the beaten track I stumbled upon the Bluebells hidden from sight deep within a corner of the wood If truth be told I could smell them before I spotted them. The sweet scented Bluebells mixing with the other woodland flowers like wild garlic was intoxicating and was unmistakable
Bluebells in woodlands are one of the finest joys of woodland macro photography for me, but they are tricky subjects to photograph. The often dappled light in woodlands brings with it a range of challenges. These challenges range from shutter speed and exposure time issues to considerations for depth of field and lens focal length, along side problems with contrast and colour. With a little practise and working with the woodland you can produce some outstanding woodland macro images.
For me photographing the bluebells at ground level always produces some very interesting and pleasing results. Using a longer focal length lens like the Samyang 135mm of the Pentax 100mm Macro lens both which have very wide working apertures allows for subject isolation that suits my style of soft ethereal macro photography.
When the dappled light of the sunrise works with you by spilling across the tops of the bluebell flowers, It can help produce some very soft and ethereal macro woodland photographs often allowing detailed close-up shots of individual bluebell stems or bluebell flower heads in hues of Blues, Purples and Mauve
I hope you enjoy the images produced and I look forward to reading your comments.
Did you know....
The bluebell has many names: English bluebell, wild hyacinth, wood bell, bell bottle, Cuckoo’s Boots, Wood Hyacinth, Lady’s Nightcap and Witches’ Thimbles, Hyacinthoides non-scripta
It is against the law to intentionally pick, uproot or destroy bluebells
If you plant bluebells, you should make sure it's the English bluebell, not the Spanish version. This is a more vigorous plant and could out-compete our delicate native flower
Almost half the world's bluebells are found in the UK, they’re relatively rare in the rest of the world
Bluebell colonies take a long time to establish - around 5-7 years from seed to flower.
Bluebells can take years to recover after footfall damage. If a bluebell’s leaves are crushed, they die back from lack of food as the leaves cannot photosynthesise.
Bluebell Folklore
If you wear a garland of bluebells, you will be compelled to tell the truth
When a bluebells bell rings, it calls all the fairies to a gathering, but if a human hears the bell, they will be visited by a malicious fairy and die soon after.
Bluebell woods are enchanted. Fairies used them to lure and trap people in their nether world.
If you turn one of the flowers inside out without tearing it, you will eventually win the one you love.
If a child picks a bluebell in a bluebell wood, they will never be seen again.
In the language of flowers, the bluebell symbolises constancy, humility and gratitude.
Take care all
Geoff.

Nice relaxing vid Geoff. Very nicely paced. The blue does stand out at the beginning of the film - and your whispering gives it some solemnity too. 👍

Thanks Mark. Always a pleasure to read your comments. I really enjoy my 100mm Macro. I managed to pick it up 2nd hand at an absolute bargain and is often on the camera. (the Pentax-D FA smc 100mm f2.8 WR Macro) if that's the one you have got, also makes for a great portrait and landscape lens too.

How many photos of bluebells is too many? (asking for a friend!) I've already had 2 days photographing them but my local wood is just about to hit it's peak. Always wanting to find that new way of shooting them and you've inspired me with this video! 'Pretty in Pink' is my favourite.
@GeoffMoorePhotography
@GeoffMoorePhotography 3 года назад
Thank Julia, You can never have too many Bluebell photos :) I like to shoot them at the same or lower level of the flower head, works well if you can get the colour of the bloom into the background as demonstrated in your favourite image 'Pretty In Pink' - Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Funny. I'm not that far away and our Bluebells seem to be a bit behind yours. They are not at their peak yet and need a few more days I think. But, as you say Geoff, they are tricky to photograph sometimes.
@GeoffMoorePhotography
@GeoffMoorePhotography 3 года назад
Thanks Neville, they can be tricky as they respond to the changing light throughout the day in such unique and interesting ways. More so that the image your eye see, is never quite what the camera seems to record, so photographing them often produces unexpected colour shifts etc.

Thank you Lee, I spend far to much time trawling google maps, google satellite view and online OS maps looking for such locations lol - You have to get creative with your walking routes from time to time, but the harder to reach places, are often the best and worth the effort. If you do find one and capture some images/video please do share with me as would love to see what you find.

@@GeoffMoorePhotography Your defiantly on the money with that one, I've got a local woodland in mind that I'll try & get out to tomorrow morning, hopefully this cold weather up north has not killed all the bluebells! I'll be sure to let you know what I got if I do get something that is ha.

@@LeeIveson Awesome. I'm in the midlands and the Bluebells are really at the peak of their season so I suspect north of Manchester they are likely a week behind us. With the south being a week in front by my estimations. I'm sure you wont be disappointed either way. Look forward to seeing what you get.

@@GeoffMoorePhotography Well I gave it a go! My spot didn't have the lush sea of purple/blue that you found, but hopefully it is a week or so behind & I'll get back there to see if that's the case. Never the less I managed to grab some shots. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XE7MUhlVTEM.html

What a great location Geoff and your images did the place justice, cracking set. Was interested to see you are a Pentax user (pentaxian?) and for years I have looked at their gear and have nearly gone over to the system a few times. Have you always been a pentax user and if so how do you find them and what was your reasoning for going with this sytem? atb Alan
@GeoffMoorePhotography
@GeoffMoorePhotography 3 года назад
Thanks Alan. You might regret asking as I think its soapbox time :) Originally I was a Canon shooter. Canon 7d and then Canon 7d Mark 2. Primary focus was on aviation like air shows etc. Then moved into shooting landscapes and specifically low light. In this regard there was nothing in canons stable apart from the 6d which was close for a camera that could give me the image quality I'm looking for and one that can cope with conditions I'm shooting in. I must caveat the point about aviation/sports that I have retained the Canon and gear for aviation shooting a few times per year, but not for the reasons most non Pentax users will state and that being Pentax (poor) autofocus capabilities. This from my experience is a load of rubbish. The difference lies in the approach to shooting sports. Most sports shooters will max out the FPS and get 3 or 5 shots in good focus and be happy with it, where as the Pentax systems are often slower in FPS but no less accurate in attaining focus (I'm excluding mirror less to aid in the comparison between DSLR alone). Rather if you shoot more in any given space of time you are likely to get more images in focus than if you shoot less in any given space of time and all other things are equal. If you see my point. I'm sure others will disagree, but those are my observations. So for me, 4fps on the Pentax is a handicap in the sporting arena compared to something that can do 10 or 15fps etc. Clearly there are many ways to shoot sports so, you can make a 4-5fps camera still produce the goods but this requires sports that are predictable and rather more stationary i.e a Cricketer/batsman awaiting for a ball to bowled or a Golfer teeing off etc. Back to the weather.... often when it comes to rather unpleasant weather, I'm left smiling to myself as the vast majority of other brand users have packed up long before the first drops of rain have been felt yet I can be still shooting as waves are topping sea walls, or driving sleet and snow etc is stripping the warmth from my skin. Pentax affords me the confidence to keep on shooting no mater what the weather is doing, all I have to do is concentrate on the image making. The other reason for my switch to Pentax cost per performance (especially K1) blows the competition out of the water and a native back catalogue of lenses spanning 70+ years which all benefit from the in body and not on lens specific stabilisation. - Canon and Nikon to a lesser degree have more choice within a set focal range compared to Pentax agreed, but Pentax has all the focal ranges covered too just less choice. Ultimately I'm not wedded to any particular brand, I just want the camera and the equipment that's the best performing for my style and interest in photography at a price point that also works for me. So far I have not found anything that can match Pentax and specifically the K1 for my particular needs. With that said... rumour has it the newly released Pentax K3 Mark is bit of an action beast!

@@GeoffMoorePhotography Thanks for this Geoff. It's always good to have people's views on why and how they shoot any given genre in photography. I used to be a Canon shooter myself and love the ergonomics, colour science etc. I will have a go at most things but my love is landscapes but I did bird photography alongside for years but to be honest I prefer watching the birds to shooting them (bird watcher primarilly) Lugging 2 cameras and gear up mountains took its toll on me and a couple of health scares and a double hernia the doc advised me to lighten the load... the f2.8 gear went 1st then gradually I downsized tro a G9 MFT cmarea and 2 lenses.. but it was shite in low light although daytime and most other circumstances it was brill.. but I wenty back to FF and when the Panasonic S5 came out it fitted what I wanted - lightweight, good video capabilities and although I am yet to test it better inb low light then the smaller sensored mft G9. I though have always had a fascinbation for the Pentax gear, not sure why so its great to hear you talking about it. I am inclined at some point to get a body and lens just to satisfy my curiosity one day I reckon... regards Al

Sounds like you have been on quite the gear adventure :) - I have often thought about the 2.8 sized telephotos but honestly the image quality for weight cost just isn't worth it for me. To satisfy your curiosity there is plenty of bang for buck Pentax cameras out there and as mentioned previously a wealth of lenses spanning 70 years, many were leading/cutting edge in the day now only a fraction of their original price, but still perform exceptionally. You only have to look at youtube for filmmakers, many are using pentax glass!
