I just subscribed to your channel....have ordered an HM130Max with 2 bed extensions. I was wondering your thoughts on having the mill so far off the ground. I was thinking for mine to help with loading onto deck is to have the bed as close to ground level as possible. Mine is without the trailer package. Any thoughts on my idea?
It depends on whether you have the ability to lift logs with machinery. If you don't have the ability to lift logs, then the mill on the ground makes more sense when you are primarily using a winch or log peavey/cant hook. Downside is the working height while dealing with the log on the mill - lots of bending and pulling slabs/lumber from the mill. Harder on your back in the end. @@ourdreaminthewoods Don't have a skid steer but a tractor with 1000lb. lift capacity. That is what I was going to do is build as close to the ground as possible to be able to roll logs onto the deck. I also have a 12,000 winch that I might be able to rig up for placing logs. Thanks
I bought the same unit and 2 extensions as well, I elected for 2x6 overlapping making basically 4x6 25'feet long with crossovers just like a railroad and can add to or away from those in a manner to allow for un-level terrain at the feet. its taken me about 3 weeks to assemble by myself with weather and my old bones. I added washers to both sides of every bolt and washers are face side up(i'm cranky like that)I probably spent $75 in washers. but no scratched paint or galvanize so a little added rust protection. I have kept the unit and rails tarped thus far till I get structure over it. Maybe can cut 1st log after xmas. Overall I am happy with quality and customer support at Woodland. my opinion best unit for money for home/hobby/homestead. cheers.
I agree with the quality of the Woodland Mills for the money. I changed my tune regarding a cover and that is my next project. Right now it is a wintery mess. But, I did get the concrete piers in before winter kicked in. Would love to see a picture of your setup!
Looks like I have found the right channel. I have thought about buying a portable mill. Do you guys have any knowledge about them? And you both say best unit for the money. What do you think is the best mill money aside? And, if I can ask, what was your total cost for mill, extensions, and foundation?
@@cautious1343 If you're wanting suggestions... Buy the biggest unit you can get. thats the 130max, you need to decide if you want it on a trailer or not. I thought I could build a better trailer no short sections due to shipping restrictions. I bought 2 extensions and don't regret it but will probably source angle locally in 20-30 foot lengths as I cut longer material. and can use bunks and dogs for new rail angle. I see guys jacking around struggling with mills with short rails because they didn't buy extensions. You WILL at some point get that larger log that you never thought you would encounter, and having a 122 or 126 series will be an obvious mistake. One thing is for sure... The stuff is not going to get any cheaper. Wait a few months and watch the price increase $1K-$1500 Watch other guys videos on these units and you will be hard pressed to find complaints if they are using them correctly or have a little general knowledge of how to operate equipment correctly. Take your time and assemble and level track properly. Materials in your area will dictate what you spend on setup. What I paid has nothing to do with your expense or location for shipping. So call woodlands and get a quote or build your cart online at their site. I have said this many times this mill if you set it up properly can cut better than some people are capable of reading a tape measure. But remember you are cutting Rough Cut Lumber, Also don't skimp on blades, I now have 40 blades and they were hard to find at one time. a mill is worthless without blades, and if you think you can sharpen good luck, I knew I could til I went to a shop and watched the whole process. @@cautious1343 Thank you and welcome! I agree with @lectro88 . I never looked into trailering the sawmill, so I'm not sure about that. A long (20-30ft) angle iron is a good idea for sure. But, I am more of wood guy vs. a metal guy so buying stock extensions from Woodland Mills worked good for me. I think the large engine is important with the 130 max. As for cost.... *sawmill with extensions : $6K *sawmill upgrades : $1300 *sawmill base : $1500 *sawmill cover : $1500 Hope this helps!
Despite growing up in a wood shop around a lot of lumber and sawdust, I knew virtually nothing about sawmills. Thanks for the tour and can't wait to see the progress.
I really wish I had a sawmill as a trained carpenter I love wood and it would be nice to take a tree and make lumber is used to make what I want because now that I am older I have got in cabinets and stuff like that I like to make and lord knows I have to make a special coffee table for my brother and it will have 8 sides so it not round but it will look cool when have it done so wish me luck because it a lot to figure out
Yes, it just seems like that’s how it goes with concrete…you always seem to need more. We wanted to have a very sturdy base since we know it will be in this spot for a few years, maybe longer.
@@ourdreaminthewoods well... by the looks of it, and your description, I would say you definitely achieved the goal. Very nicely done. Strong and sturdy. I'm going to buy a sawmill pretty soon. Did you research the top brands before buying woodland mills?
@@cautious1343 Thank you. We are happy with it. The short story on choosing the Woodland Mills HM130 Max is that my brother-in-law (Erik) had already done a bunch of research for us (we share the sawmill). I added the two extensions and upgrades to help fit our needs.
