A thoroughly enjoyable couple of days Mike, even if the conditions weren’t the best. As some of the previous comments have stated, it’s good to know that we all struggle at times. Thank you for your time Mike 👍 My video will be out later today
Hello Mike, I can't tell you how pleased I feel watching you and Gary in Wistman's wood, which fortunately, is not far for me to get to, yet, really struggle to find 'that' composition, so now, I'm not alone !! All the best..
Ah Mike, this was great to watch. My good pal Gary and lots of chuckles. Really enjoyed this. I’ve been a huge fan and follower of you since 2010, wonderful!
Excellent video. Your honest assessment of your woodland shortcomings was refreshing and a valuable lesson as well. Even if it is out of your comfort zone, give it a try. I wonder how much more meaningful that one, special, spot on capture in a genre outside your comfort zone will be compared to those excellent captures that you are totally comfortable with in your chosen genre. Failure sweetens success! You and Gary should continue to occasionally vlog together. Your chemistry guarantees a successful video. Enjoyed this immensely.
There is a little piece of ' woods ' near our house about three minutes walk, which I go to every once in a while. It used to be a lot larger, but a few years ago the Manchester council allowed houses to be built on that land. I find it difficult but inspiring to roam around there in different seasons, and usually I end up with a half decent photograph there. Yes, I would prefer to be able to go peak district every week as I used to do in my younger days in the early 80s, but that is not possible any longer, so I try and find inspiration nearby. This was a great video BTW. Thank you.
Having just been to a similarly complex place for photography, a Japanese Garden in fact, I found that a helpful thing to do was walk away, then come back at a different angle. This helped me 'see' compositions I couldn't find before.
Mike, I wish I'd have known you were going to be a 5 minute ride away from me I'd have popped over and said hello. Wouldn't have got in your way but I'd have loved to meet you and Gary on my home patch. Hey-ho enjoyed the video anyway just missed the bike ride over Dartmoor.
Are we there yet Gary? Lol we certainly are thank you guys been looking forward to this for awhile 😊.. I live in the desert so a woodlands area a little to far away.. But getting sand dune landscape shots can be pretty tricky at times as well 😊.. We had a bit of rain here about two months ago and rain here is like a sunny day in the UK lol.. Joking but we have very few cloudy days that I love.. So my wait can be weeks at times.. But back to that rainy cloudy morning I got some wet sand dune captures that I was rather happy with 😊
Are we there yet,,, hahaha Good little collaboration between 2 very good photography teachers, been watching a bit of Gary's channel lately because i just don't have a natural eye for landscape photography and really struggle to capture a scene i finally do think looks good
Interesting video of a wonderful ancient location which I thoroughly enjoyed and it brought back some good memories. You critiqued one of my images from Wistman's about a year ago and I'm pleased to say you liked it. A beautiful British rainforest which I am sad to say is being devastated by the tons of visitors, many of who scrape patterns in the moss on the stones, destroy the lichen which takes years to develop and grow or climb onto these ancient oaks. Having such a huge following, it would be good to hear you warn of such things in your videos and perhaps implore people to treat these dwindling ancient environments with the respect that they deserve and not treat them like 'playgrounds'.
You.. and Gary Gough..together..in one video?? Whose I idea was that?? Absolutely genius! Purely on the grounds of entertainment value, let alone the photography! 🤣🤣
Wow Mike, I really enjoyed this video, I got so much from what you both were trying to explain and accomplish. I'm also going to subscribed to Gary's RU-vid account too......oh....and are we there yet? lol
Oh Mike, what have you gone and done now? Out of all hobbies (Photography is my job), you have now left me with a massive desire to pass my bike test? I will tell my other half to have a word with you so that you can to justify it! ;-) Brilliant series and this video particularly good. Stephen
My favourite two RU-vid photographers together, that was great. And funny. You are making me realise what sort of photographer I actually am. More like you, documentary style, I like landscape but I also like documenting life around me. Thank you guys that was awesome.
Awesome combination of photography experts. Thank you Mike and Gary for sharing your knowledge and composition ideas. Such valuable information and inspiration.
Disappointed how such a great channel (which I subscribed to 12 years ago) has so few subscribers, while gear oriented channels have much, much more. Just goes to show that people are far more interested in gear than actual photography. Of course most deny it, but it is clear as daylight. Thank you, Mike !
My two favourite photographers together….just fantastic. Thank you both. Such honest, helpful and generous contributors to the photographic hobby or profession. Cheers from Down Under.
Two master photographers working together I was waiting for the big bang but no that did not happen! one using a tripod the other just doing hand held both getting results and getting their points over to the viewers. Thanks for the advice on how you see woodland chaos, I think Mike still struggled with it! I am sure Mike will put that right very soon! Thank you both for this weeks blog.
Very interesting and you can see the difficulty, but it does take away some of the pain, How do they do and get that photo feeling. Now we all know. Light, patience and perseverance! DG
I've been waiting for these vlogs from the two of you. I wasn't disappointed. "Gary, are we nearly there?" hilarious. Really enjoyed this one. Great idea Mike.
Its an amazing looking area. Almost fairy tale looking. Problem is,and im no pro at all...Its all the exact same look same color same "thing" subject..It all blends together. Its like trying to photograph a blade of grass in a field and trying to find something that makes it different. You would almost have to camp there for like a week and just walk around it..sit down and look at it..walk around it..look..then suddenly that MOMENT might hit.AND you got that right when you said a camera cant capture what our eyes do. Our eyes are amazing.OF course its our brain that calculates it all..BUT no camera will EVER do what our lil eyes can do..
As someone who subscribes to both your channels, it has been a pleasure and educational watching you work together. I do remember the interview.. Thank you both.
Fantastic! Just returned from Dartmoor last week. Beautiful place. Revisiting the location I asked my partners hand in marriage near Bellever Woods. That’s an interesting place to photograph. Dartmoor is certainly a challenging landscape. Great shots guys! 🤩
Excellent video Mike & Gary, I have followed Garys channel for quite a while now & through himself I have found another fantastic photographer in Mike Browne. I look forwards to watching your work Mike. i think in woodland photography i prefer the Darker Shadow images as apposed to those with light. I think it makes the scene a little more moody
Thanks for the link to the interview. I think I learned more from this interview about photography than I ever have reading all of the how to articles on the internet. I will have to go and check out professor Brown’s lessons. Tom Brewer
There are places I have been to again and again and again before I managed to get a good shot even though the landscape was stunning because the light was so poor. I was lucky in living near those places. How people do it when they only get one chance to visit somewhere I don't know.
So for bracketing, I was wondering why do it. Would it save time editing? I feel like I'm missing something important about why to use it. Edit: oops, I'm on the wrong video. I'll go watch the other one.
Great to see you guys working together, but why did you keep calling Gavin Hastings Gary Gough? I have tried to go to that location about four times and the weather has always been 'wrong' so I went to other locations. Having seen the location, as opposed to the images posted by others, I am rather glad I found other places on Dartmoor. Not saying where!
