I recently picked up a WoodRiver 4 1/2 Smoothing/Bench Plane, and I thought I would do an unboxing and first impressions video.
If you don't want to watch the whole video, here is the quick and the dirty: LOVE IT!
Pros: Heavy, Overall very well made, based on Stanley BedRock planes, 1/8 iron (and chip breaker), high quality finishing details (frog mates well with base of plane), sole was square and rather flat.
Cons: I had to return the one in the video because there was a bubble in the casting that broke through and left a 1mm in diameter, circular void on the sole. The iron on the original plane (in this video) was not very flat (but the one one the replacement was exceedingly flat), the sole had a hollow around the mouth.
Would I buy again? Yes!
Would I every be considering buying a Lie-Nielsen someday, you betcha?
Would I recommend this to you? Definitely, especially if you have a WoodCraft near you, there is not real risk involved.
Where to buy: www.woodcraft....

I have the same plane and was surprised that the first iron has that hollow section. Mine was flat like your second one. I couldn’t be happier with it. Glad you like it!

Great review. I had the exact same experience on my WoodRiver 4 1/2. The first one had a couple of issues, including a problem with the tension of the lever cap, the blade was way out of being flat. I took it back and got a replacement. The blade on the replacement is the flattest blade I had ever seen, it was literally dead flat out of the box, flatter than my Lie Nielsen ones.

Crazy! So glad you got it replaced, though! I’m 100% happy with mine, and it’s been 4 years I think.

I'm really impressed with being able to read through the shavings, and it looks ever so pretty. I like having to do some flattening of the blade etc, I don’t have ant tools in this league but the work I have to do with a new tool as I feel that’s when the tool becomes mine. I'm shocked at the void but they replaced it with no problem which is very good. I have some upper body difficulties, and as strange as it sounds I like things on the 'heavy' side as I can be very clumsy with light stuff. Your reviews are always honest as you find them and at a level I understand. Another great video Andrew.

Thanks, Mark! I really love this plane and don’t regret dropping the $ one bit. It is very hefty, and like you said, you give it more thought while holding so you don’t fumble it as easily. Thanks so much for always commenting and for your kind words! Cheers!

I have Stanley No.4½ type 11, but I'm hoping to find a Stanley 604½ smooth and corrugated. I love the Bed Rocks.

Nice! I’d love a 605 as a shooting plane!

looks sweet, I've been eyeing the 5-1/2 for a while but money is pretty tight at the moment. I love the old planes but man, the chip breaker, the way the frog mates to the sole, and the rounded end on the blade adjustment arm to reduce slop, are all really appealing which are all the things that give me headaches on my great grandad's old planes.

Thanks for the reply, the problems with my planes aren't really the irons, just the different parts of the planes but the heavy iron on the woodriver is definitely a plus. I have gone to two different woodcraft locations and looked at them, they are very nice for the the price . I have a #4 but my go to is my #5, I know paul sellers says you can do everything with a #4 but I just find the #5 so versatile and I really love the width on the 5-1/2.

wood by wright recently put out a video about how to set up the chip breaker that I found really helpful, I would check it out.

Really nice plane, you may want to recheck to sole flatness with the iron retracted, and under tension, it will make a difference in the measurement. Hope this helps!

Blade in or out does not make a difference with the sole flatness. Its been reviewed hundreds of times with no cernable difference. Plane away youre doing just fine.

Can you tell me the brand and grits of your diamond stones? I’m interested in purchasing some and I’m overwhelmed with so many out in the market.

Hey there! No problem! They are DMT diamond stones: course, extra fine, and extra extra fine. They are 8x3 inches. I have another showing my sharpening setup here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VCb0B-yapUI.html Cheers!

Andrew Milacci Thanks for your advice i found it very useful I was thinking in buy the 4 1/2 and use it as a general purpouse plane in replacement of my chinese n4 and turn it (n4) in a small scrub palne And in the future get a low angle block plane for more fine stuff What do u' think about my buying plan-idea? And about the price, here in Perú is about 219 USD with taxes :-( I can buy it from amazon but could have problems with te waranty and the postal service here is not that good so i think i'll pay the price for safe aspects Hope you'll make that in-depth review soon (maybe talking pro/cons and making demos of its plane power)

Did you sharpen the iron before taking those shavings or is this a 100% straight out of the box demonstration?
@Tome4kkkk
@Tome4kkkk 6 лет назад
The HandToolery I see. Great demonstration! And a solid solid product! PS. Woodriver or Lie Nielsen made a funny April's Fools video about customized handles. Check it out! :)

I paid $15 for a type 13 Stanley in near pristine shape. Better deals are out there. I also own a Lie Nielsen #4.
