Hello music lovers! Hope everyone is doing great this week. I had a few questions on how to improve the tone of your acoustic instruments when you have to plug in direct and can't use a microphone. Well currently my solution is a little reverb pedal and this Grace Design preamp. It sounds wonderful to me and "feels" good, the instrument responds more naturally if that makes sense. Obviously, there is nothing as pleasing as a good microphone on an acoustic instrument, but sometimes we just don't have that luxury! Let me know in the comments what you think!

Great info. Going to give it try. I have been using a BOSS AD3 for about 15 years or so. It just matches up to my Takamine acoustic. Have tried many other preamps but always go back to the AD3.

I have never used metronome and I have been playing guitar for 13 years. I am fast, but when I start playing triplets with alternate picking major scale at 150 bpm I start making mistakes here and there. Andy you are such an amazing guitar player, I watched you on truefire. My question for you and for anyone reading this comment is how fast should you go/ how fast do you play and how fast am I going to increase my speed and how ?

I wish more modern musicians would listen to, and emulate Andy's advice :) and also listen to the recorded acoustic work of the 1960s/70s as I hate the sound of electro acoustics on modern recordings. Particular Acoustic favourites are Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) Pete Townsend (The Who) David Bowie Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) Cat Stevens The Eagles Fleetwood Mac

man this isn't about ideal recording tones, i mention several times in the video that there is no substation for a microphone. This video is to help those that MUST plug in for live scenarios.

@@andywoodmusic I wasn't referring to your sound in this video (or in your general recordings), Andy. This is a fantastic recording sound you've showcased here, and I wish more recording artists (and live acts) took the time to produce a better acoustic sound. Bluegrass musicians seem to be the only ones who strive for an authentic acoustic/instrument live sound these days - I've edited my initial rant :)

@@coolmacatrain9434 oh i was confused! lol. You know me though, I LOVE the old way of doing things. ALWAYS has more vibe and sounds cooler. Do you like Jason Isbell? he gets great sounds on his records.

@@andywoodmusic He does indeed! Fantastic voice, a great player and sound ...and an absolutely incredible lyricist. I also love Billy Strings and his interpretation of classic songs such as Tennessee Stud - modern, yet still "old-timey" It seems that Bluegrass and Country are in good hands with people such as yourself and Billy & Jason et al Now, if only something could be done about the Pop charts :)

Thanks! Helpful video. I thought the mandolin sounded a lot better w/the Bix, but I thought the acoustic guitar sounded a bit too bright w/ the Bix. I preferred the direct sound. Does your Larivee have the Anthem pickup? If so, that might explain it (built-in mic and all). I'm looking for some kind of preamp/eq solution for my K&K equipped Martin.

@@cmcg5788 I think it will offer more options but IMO the greatness is in all of their products. I actually preferred the bix due to more plug and play approach

For a K&K there was at least one suggestion on the mandolincafe of getting an impedance adapter when using it with a Bix.

Honestly because I’m not pushing anything hard enough to require the loop. That and it sounded great so I didn’t need to re address anything. Easy peezy

This is literally the only person with the sense to do a proper actual a/b comparison of the Grace Design preamp. Every other video about this product is functionally worthless. Than you for not being an idiot.

@@andywoodmusic looking at the Alix too but man it’s pricey. My Collings MF has a K&K twin spot in it. Do you miss the mid eq dials? Have a ToneBone PZ pre now and play mostly straight up eq

One last question Andy…with this pedalboard what kind of power source do you use? Separate for each, Y cable/plug combo, power brick?? Trying to figure it out!
