The first part of the film is a copy of my original footage shot with an Argus super 8 movie camera, with no sound. The second part is me on T.V. in Phoenix Arizona in 1999 the 30th anniversary of Woodstock.
Fifty years ago i spent five days ....... my Dad drove us right up to the stage on August 14, 1969 they were building it, not that many people were there yet !on Friday morning i woke up and my eyes almost popped out of my head ,tents and cars everywhere it was the greatest time i ever had ,the feeling when i think of all the music was awesome but it he vibe was even better i felt safe i felt like everyone was connected like brothers and sisters, the hog farmers kept us fed , i stayed with my friend Leo all the way until Hendrix RIP Jimi and Janice . They’re having the 50th at Watkins Glen Aug 16 17 18 see you there!
I was there... Some of my buddies and I decided the night before and we just went. I got there just in time to see the tall chain link fence go down...! I soon took a job selling hot dogs at a concession... all the food was gone in one hour. I made a small pay check for that. I saw a friend from my home town, Steven Tallerico who you will know as Steven Tyler of Aerosmith fame... He was in a very bad condition, if you know what I mean. The crowd continued to swell. I ran into a previous girlfriend and her sister who put me up in their tent. I stayed two or three days on then bummed a ride back to Westchester. I noticed a professional photographer on the stage take a shot in my direction just before I left and when the TIME Magazine special came out in December, spotted my distant image although without enough facial details to convince anyone but myself.
This should be in the Smithsonian!!!!!! Boy, we sure SMOKED a LOT back then! Leslie & Felix, OMG, PRICELESS!!! So GLAD you had that CAMERA!!! JANIS TOO......OMG. I WAS RIGHT UP FRONT fot JOE C........when they THREW ALL of the BEER into the CROWD. WANNA GO BACK THERE and DIE. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU JAY- YOU HUNG OUT WITH MOUNTAIN, MY FAVES THEN!!!!! DREAMS of MILK & HONEY!!!!
It's great to see some of the backstage stuff and different angles of the bands compared to the released footage. I love and have most all of the videos that are domestically released....and many others. I love the movie...BUT it relies heavily on closeups from the musicians on the stage. I mean it works great with the split screen stuff but I never really get to see what's in the surrounding area of the stage. It's interesting to see Leslie West and Felix Pappalardi hanging out near the helicopter landing area!!!! I so wish I could have been there. Thanks very much for sharing the footage.
The stage was nothing more than a shit load of scaffolding tied together. Not very strong, in fact you could only get on the stage if the band you were with was on or you were on the stage crew. The film crew was off stage in the front.
As I am sure you know not everyone follows orders. I was on the stage for Jefferson Airplane, although I had nothing to do with the band, I just blended in with their entourage as they walked up the steps to the stage. They did have security at the steps up to the stage, but they missed me.
Amazing. To have these moments caught on camera is just amazing and the fact that anyone in this video could look at this and mentally go right back there,is beautiful. Like it was yesterday for them
sorry no, the footage is super 8 movie film, not video, and I only had 3 rolls (about 9 min.) I shot some of Ten Years After but it was too dark. Don't forget this was 1969
Wonderful footage Jay - thank you. I've watched the movie countless times and looking at your footage of Cocker and the angle shot, can we see you in the movie filming him towards the end of Help From My Friends - is that you stood behind the amp? Cheers and peace.
You are very fortunate. I got to enjoy my Woodstock experience thanks to KLSX back home in Los Angeles, during Aug 89. Was held at Cal State Dominguez Hills and included many of the original performers. Even got to talk to Wavy Gravy. The 94 Northridge Quake threw me over here to Phoenix. A totally different world than Los Angeles. I am getting up there in years, but still consider myself an activists and Aging Hippie. We were even having Love-In's in Griffith Park during the 80's and 90's. It was a real Groovy Time. What do you think happened to our generation. Far to many went from wanting to change the world, to now wanting to buy it. There are times, i have to question what planet am i on today? Are you still here in Phoenix?
I saw Janis Joplin,Jefferson Airplane and Joe Cocker in the footage.Believe me it was Love,Freedom, Peace and Utopia.Yeah Man Yeah.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️.
I was in Vietnam duckin’ & dodgin’ bullets, hand grenades & mortar rounds when Woodstock was going on (1969) but I got to see the movie when I got home so it was kinda like I was there.
Do you still own the original reels of film? because this footage could benefit from a digital transfer in higher resolution. I'd like to add sound to this but it's difficult with the quality. If you're interested in having a new transfer please let me know.
Hello, I am producing media for Warner Brother Records’ Woodstock 50th Anniversary releases and would like to inquire about using your Woodstock footage.
Visiting this site on the 50th anniversary of Janis Joplin's death. For anyone who doesn't know, this footage is remarkable not only for its depiction of rock and roll history, but for LGBTQ history: This is, as far as I can tell, the only film of Janis and her girlfriend Peggy Caserta (that's Peggy in the flowered minidress with Janis). It's wonderful to see the joy in both of their faces, and I only wish I had found this site in time to thank Jay for shooting and sharing this film.
Hey Jay! Thanks for posting your footage so that others can enjoy seeing some historical moments that would otherwise be lost forever, such as L. West & F. Pappalardi clowning around, or J. Joplin hanging out with M. Balin, or J. Cocker eating a peach! While you were filming Jefferson Airplane, you were on the side of the stage closest to Nicky Hopkins, correct? Did you have any interactions with him, or notice anything interesting that has stuck with you regarding Nicky? He played on Bobby Keys' only solo lp, and your former employers/friends Mountain also worked on that same record.
Wow… Leslie West…Santana….Janis….chick with the major white afro….Joe Cocker… Grace Slick and the Airplane, good crowd footage… sunset. Then at 6:06… we get some audio and News Channel 3 with Jay Colbe. Best summah evah!
Its hard to believe that this event came about because of a counterculture which was only a small part of the Baby Boom generation. Most Boomers were as straight as their parents and were unaware of a lot of the music, music which was made by freaks for freaks. It was lonely for the straight Boomers, girls who were part of the counterculture didn't want to have anything to do with them. They were angry and confused at something they didn't understand. A lot of that changed after the Woodstock documentary was released, many of those straight Boomers finally realized that their parents, the media and the authorities were misleading them about the "hippies". At that point, many of them started growing their hair and started smoking pot. Unfortunately they were unaware of the reasons why the counterculture came about, they diluted the meaning of things and it became just a fashion for them, it was the beginning of the end.
Jay Colbe - I was a big Mountain fan and went to many of their shows back in the day including Woodstock and met the guys a couple times-Felix was super nice (RIP).
@@JayColbe closest I got to Woodstock was, I partied with Roger from the Who in Chicago back in the nineties, and hung out with Steven Stills in San Diego.
The footage was projected on a screen, in the1990's than transferred to DVD. The fast movement was due to me only having 3 rolls of film, couldn't get back to Hotel for the rest.
How about 50?? I have a pacemaker, thyroid cancer and had my neck fused c3-c7 front and back. Got the back done a month ago. Was off meds in a couple days after surgery. BEAST . And yeah some things are better when people call them out on lies. Hollywood musicians. Hendrix went on to become Morgan Freeman. Jim Morrison = Chevy Chase. When you see the scenes of the crouwd there is a line where the fake crowd meets. It is a huge painted backdrop. They have to pan by it fast so you don't notice. Hollywood trickery.
@@JayColbe He passed away a couple of years ago. He was a producer at Warner Brothers. Fred started The Bitter End in Greenwich Village and launched a lot of musical careers. He published his memoir before he died called, Bruce Lee, Woodstock, and Me.
I don't remember flowers, but pieces of clothing was dropped. The clothing I was told was part of a relief effort to help the kids in the crowd after being rained on for so long. Just a bunch of rags, if I remember.
I don't remember anyone dropping pot, and sought of doubt it. This was New York in the summer, pot was hard to get. I had some bad homegrown that I was puffing away with a bunch of roadies in the back of a semi truck during one of the many rain delays and they were talking about trying to get some pot from the crowd with no luck.
fuxgood I got on the stage 4 times. Once with Mountain, twice with Dee Anthony, Joe Cocker's and Ten Years After's U.S. manager, and once with this guy that security mistakenly thought was one of the group (Jefferson Airplane) I was real lucky!!
Jay Colbe LOL...I once walked on to the stage just before Cheap Trick was set to come out. Got onstage just because I wore the right color shirt...happened to look like security. lol
