I just found your channel yesterday! I love your top. So pretty! 😊 As a natural introvert, I admire your way of life, and I can admit I'm just that little bit envious....😉My husband and I have three children, two of whom are still at home and always will be due to special needs. Also, we are live-in caregivers for my 90 year-old mother. But I'd ❤ to be able to live alone in a cabin in the middle of nowhere were it not for my family whom I love. *Kudos to you!*

I heat with wood all winter and go through about 3 to 4 cords although this year it may be 2. I enjoyed your talk about the wood stove. I am going to get some of the of the fire prevention for chimney fires and I am getting a moisture meter. We did have a fire a few years ago. The fire was caused by spontaneous combustion between the house and the chimney. The fire department was less than a mile away. The building codes have changed. Two fire departments. Police and ambulances showed up. The fire turned out to be confined to the west side of the house. I have a bit of advise for the people. When your smoke alarm goes off believe it! Alone, you have a happy New Year. I enjoy your talks and the scenery you show. Still hoping to get to AK this spring and summer. Tom

I was a volunteer fireman rural Arkansas for 15+ years. Yes a lot of chimney fires. We offered free inspection's and made flue covers it choke out the fire. H ere we had oak, hickory, maple and other hard woods. Everyone be careful with fire.

You are living the life I have always wanted to live. My dream to live in a small cabin started in 1954 in Salida, Co when I was only six. Lots of life's excuses as to why I did not and still do not finally live my dream but I can now, vicariously, through you! Hope you have a happy, safe and healthy 2024 and that your foot heals well. I don’t have a catalytic converter stove, but my 25 yo stove claims to have a 4 stage burn. I use the top down starting method you described whenever I start with a cold box or very few coals. Brings the temp up nice and fast, I shut the stove air vents down when the stack temp reaches the line between yellow and red. (I do not have a stack damper.) This is a nice start to build up a bed of coals, and I build on the bed of coals through the day. I aim to keep the stack temp in the yellow range on the stack thermometer, it seems happy about 1/3 into the yellow range. No creosote builds up on the glass, just some fine ash. I have a double stack all the way up, insulated once it reaches the structure. I often wonder if I should swap the interior stack out for single wall for more direct heat transfer to my living space, but I was told the double wall stack would help reduce creosote build up by keeping stack temps hotter. I toss some Rutlands power in about once a month. I had no creosote when I cleaned my stack this year. FWIW, I think it’s worth getting an adjustable section of stack right above your stove for cleaning purposes. Remove that section, then run the cleaning rods through a garbage bag taped around the stack. I was intimidated by the idea of removing a section of stack, but it was no big deal when I finally did it. Easy peasy compared to going on the roof! : )

Important info. Thx I invested in a soapstone woodstove - 3 split pieces heats my home for 12 to 14 hours. Once the fire is hot - about 1/2 hour - position the Catalytic Converter turning the smoke to heat - a woodstove tech who sells soapstones can explain this. Anyway - it's the stone that heats up and keeps you warm - not the wood burning. It's well worth the investment. Also - the top stones come off and you can cook on it.

Sweetheart, I’m an old woman. Born and raised in the hills of northern NY. I regularly burn my chimney out. Yup! I set that creosote ablaze. Have for 60 years! Never experienced an issue if it’s done “ within reason” I hear it crackle and rumble and it’s clear within a couple short minutes. I also order my wood with one quarter full log pieces for long slow burns for overnight. Don’t worry so much.

That’s what we did growing up. I agree. We lived in Potsdam NY area. Have you ever heard of burning a beer can ? Somebody tossed an empty beer can in their fireplace and i was like…?!?! They said something in it , a compound or something from it as it burns cleans chimney or helps keep it clean. I’ve never heard that, but they swore by it.

12-13% is perfect. The longer the prongs the better. Everyone who burns wood should have one.👍 The dryer it is and the less bark it has the less cleaning needed. I don’t burn anything but wood in my fireplace. Air circulation is a must in a cabin. It helps so much.👍 Have a great week..!!

I recommend putting your fan close to the floor, and blow cold air up to the loft area. Seems to work much better than blowing hot air down. Or put a ceiling fan up and run it in reverse. Thanks for the videos!

Hi Alone, good to hear your foot is on the mend. Ok, the absolute way to prevent a chimney fire is what I have done for many years and that is clean your chimney once a month, I do whether it needs it or not. A clean chimney is a safe chimney. I do burn cardboard in my woodstove but, I break it up into little scraps, it works like Birch Bark. I don't cut trees down and buck them up anymore so, yeah I buy firewood but, I let the seller know, if it isn't what I ordered, he/she is going back with a load of firewood. LOL Thanks for another very nice video.

2 of my most favorite things watching a warm fire 🔥 on a cold night . Summer rain on a metal roof . Hard working lady i have found if i use dry wood to get the stove hot and throw a bigger not wet but a damp large piece the fire will stay good and hot all night because it burns longer i clean my stove 3 times a year and use tripple wall stainless steel pipe i bought 2 dampers one at the stove one under the cap if you have a chimney fire you close both it will smother the fire 🔥 i just leave the one on the roof completely open . Most important thing you can do is keep the chimney clean period. My grampa taught me about smothering a chimney fire smothering it with closing both dampers because no air no fire and tripple stainless all the way up but its expensive but worth it

I burn spruce in the spring and fall, and birch during the winter. Spruce is cheaper here. What about your fans on the top of your oven? I feel like the fan I have on the top of my woodstove has no effect. Maybe you should look into getting a clean burning oven? We only sweep the chimney every 4th year 🙂 My chimney was clean this year when the chimney sweeper was here 🙂 stay safe!

Alone, this episode was so much fun. You have a way of make me laugh. I can see you up on your roof dumping snow down the chimney. :-) Your cabin is situated in a breath taking place. There is nothing prettier than looking at those snow covered majestic mountains. Glad to hear that you are comfortable in your own "skin" and be able to make the best of your "Alone" times. I'm like you, don't need to be around a bunch of people to be happy. Be sure you have the right fire arm with you so when a bear start charging it will take it down. Be happy, be safe and don't let your guard down. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

My son keeps asking why/when we can build another igloo, like we did in the past. Sadly, NYC is not getting any good snowfalls. Once I heal, we will head upstate to find some. Excellent info on using a wood stove. It was so good that if you look up chimney fires in Alaska, you will find your RU-vid posting. Awesome!! I had a wood burning furnace in my home for 26 years until I moved. And never had a chimney fire. But I kept the chimney clean, (once during the season and at the end) used dry hard wood( Oak and Birch with out the bark). and tried never to have just a smoldering fire. Thanks for all your Videos, and have a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year!

Great video . Just this week someone stopped at our house and said “do you know you have flames shooting out the top of your stove pipe which is red hot?” No worries, we have been through the drill over the 30 years we have heated with wood. Great info for beginners. In Pa. we burn a lot of dead maple. My hubby has been sick so we had to burn slab wood that we bought from a mill. I’m sure this caused the problem.
